a friend of mine is from savannah, his momma told him and she believed it that the name came from a girl that fell off a bridge and they yelled save anna, she believed it, I have never heard that.

That's a cute story but entirely false. It's named after "a grassland ecosystem characterized by the trees being sufficiently small or widely spaced so that the canopy does not close." (Wikipedia) We have that sort of terrain here.

I've lived here all of my life and our trees do touch if you dont believe me go down to the wildlife refuge or wormsloe.... and its named after a rough indian translation of the name of the river which does have something to do with grass.
