All comments regarding this film as full of "self-hating stereotypes" are spurious. The implication is that such stereotypes do not, or should not, exist; in fact, like all stereotypes, they exist in quantity, across all times and cultures. Watch the entire film, and tell me that you don't know at least one person in your life, straight or gay, who doesn't have one or more of the "stereotypes" that are being railed against. They're PEOPLE. That's the point.
This excellent film has inherited several criticisms that are untrue, and unfair. One is that it is "reactionary"--"self-hating." In truth, it presents a group of men who, with a few adjustments , woiuld emerge to forceful life today, and their psches would reveal many of the same problems. Another clinging criticism is that it deals only in stereotypes. Sheer nonsense. Every one of these characatershas an antecent in today's gay ranks. The film remains true and masterful.
We once had a brief affair with the one who played the hustler. He was very nice and always treated us like a queen! We would even work out together at Gold's Gym in Santa Monica.
I would love to see this movie. I love "The Boys In the Band".I can't believe I saw this on TV when I was under 10, before 1975 I was like Wow I'm not the only one and MANY years later seeing periods of my life in most of the characters and being SO thrilled that I missed the self doubt/hate that pushes the ugliness so far. Now what nobody seems to comment on is that "Michael" the host is a mean drunk not nessasarily just a mean "faggot".
This looks interesting. Unfortunately, I hated the movie BOYS IN THE BAND when I saw it as a young gay man and I loathe it just as much today. It's full of the worst stereotypes. If the film negative were burned I would applaud.
Was that Norman from the first season of The Real World at 1:26?
