I've had that same situation. I dropped the idol and brought the woman to the exit, but then I was able to go back to the idol and take it with me anyway! :D

I would take the damsel over the idol. There are many ways to get money in the game, but only one way to get health.

Besides that, damsels can be thrown farther, so they make better weapons in a pinch.

Also, *spoiler-ish*, I think the arrow traps make the cave area harder than the jungle area. They have more range, and you will sometimes get into situations where you can't throw something to get past them. Plus, in dark levels they can kill you before you see them.

If you're good enough, go for it.

I find the latter is slow and usually ends in horrible ghost induced death, at least for me, and the second can be pretty resource consuming in the earlier stages when you don't have any useful equipment.
