Perhaps this massive bell has combined tone with the other two tones. The main one is Pitch A while the second one is pitch D, and the faint tone is pitch E or slight Eb.
If you don't like the ringing tone, ask the famous Paccard about it. He was one of the founders. The pitch is D which is very fitting for a peel for peace. The bell can be heard for 25 miles. Come to Newport, Kentucky, USA to hear it for yourself.
You all sit there and say you don't like it , than why do you come all the way over here to look at it. And yes, we do have the largest free swinging bell.
thats the largest bell still working - the largest bell in the world is in Moscow, Russia and it has a funny sound is it made out of brass or what? what key is it?
this and the gotenba bell are the examples that over a specific size or weight, or even both, the sound of a bell cannot be even...even petersbell is somewhat losing some of the tone definition through its overtone
If you are thinking of the Liberty Bell, it still has a crack and cannot ring. It is also only about 4' in diameter and could easily fit inside this bell.
Though, just remembered, the bell in cologne doesn't turn about its center of gravity as the peace bell does. Different category of "largest bell". Peace bell is significantly larger than that of the cathedral.
Enter "Gotenba Bell" on YT and you'll see it's successor, the heaviest swinging bell on earth: The 36250 kg Gotenba Bell, founded in the Netherlands. She's situated in Gotenba, Japan.
It has been our unfortunate tradition over the last 150 years. It is believed that the balanced yoke exerts less force on the supporting structure, which is most often an A-stand bolted to a beam rather than a European-style cage or framework. The few American companies that install bells seem to think that this is the only way to do it. In fact, most of them prefer to automate bells with striking hammers rather than swinging bell motors, and linear (magnetic) bell machines are unheard of here.
The World Peace Bell was the 5th largest church bell (four were larger in Russia) until 2006; now it is the 6th largest (one is larger in Gotenba, four more in Russia). This is often said to be 66,000 lbs (33 short tons); but it is actually just over 33 metric tons. The bell's weight is 33,385 kg (73,614 lbs), and it is 12 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter. I know they strike it every day at noon, but how often do they swing the World Peace Bell?

Unfortunately, nearly all American bells have arched yokes and ring too slowly, even bells cast in Europe.
Audinos 3 years ago
Why do nearly all american bells have arched yokes? - this way that kind of bell
can unfortunately never obtain its full sonority!

The largest free-swinging bell is the St. Peters-Bell in Köln, Germany. Although nice vid :)
KnightGarter 4 years ago 4
Dear Knigt Garter, Thàt is what the germans say...
This bell only ecxist for less than a decate so it;s not quite famous.
But this bell has a under tone of A and it is heavier than the st. Peter.
But I must say that this bell doesn't swing much as the st peter.
Gspijkenisse 4 years ago
This bell IS the biggest Swiningg Bell in the World (33 tons instead of 24 tons in Cologne).
Wijnmuseum 4 years ago
The biggest swinging bell in the world was the Peace Bell, but today in Gotemba (Japan) there is a 36250 kg swinging bell...
meme2702 4 years ago
Actually. The biggest bell is indeed the (Ducht) bell in Tokinosumika Park in Gotenba City.
36,3 tonnes.
It's swung with arched yoke, though the clapper actually falls and doesn't fly like here.
vive eijsbouts;)
Gspijkenisse 4 years ago
"free-swinging": the yoke-profil is important!
Correct, the largest "free-swinging" bell (yoke without U-profile!) is the "Bell of St. Peter" in Cologne, 24 tones. ;-)
