@Hunkola Ooooh, the wars. I'm hating these conference realingments. It's killing rivalies. Over the years Florida has 4 teams that didn't even exsist in 1988. FAU, FIU, UCF & USF.
@carlosZ1981 They were not going to let Miami win that one, no doubt. That Gary fumble they called on the goal line has to be one of the worst calls I have ever seen, his knee was down and the ball had already crossed the goal line, yet they still call a fumble. Changed the outcome for sure.
@umcane79 Yes he had the ball but DB George Streeter knocked the ball loose,he had his hand on the ball but did not have control and the Irish recovered...a good call by the refs!
@umcane79 That play was irrelevant anyways because ND fumbled the ball right back to Miami, setting up their score and the botched 2 pt conversion. Either way, ND wins
@covrunner Maybe, but with more time on the clock, whos to say Miami wouldnt have gone for the extra point to tie, then kick off to Notre Dame to stop or force a turnover in which they did, then hit the field goal to win. Plus the Notre Dame fumble was legit, Gary's was not, thats what changes everything.
@umcane79 Its possible but there's no way to know that that would've happened (granted I'm not sure how much time was left when that fumble occured.) However, the fact is that Notre Dame won. Miami also had 7 turnovers, and Miami fans tend to get caught up in that one play as the reason for their loss.
Two ND games stick out from my childhood. This game and the 93 game vs. FSU, not just because of the Irish wins, but the sheer volume of the crowd. It's amazing to have experienced both of these games and still remember the crowd noise. I'm not sure what BK will do during his tenure at ND, but I'd like to see these kind of wins happen in South Bend in the near future.
@rapiddominace Speaking of the Suckeyes, I hear they're giving two for one tattoo specials on campus. Supposedly you can pay with cash, check, or football memorabilia. Have fun next season with all your cheaters being suspended.
Since CBS has the rights to the Sun Bowl and all, can they just hire back Brent Musberger to really bring back the memories, like when he always seemed to get upset when mentioning the Hurricanes...
god...remember when notre dame used to compete for national titles...ever since the fsu game in '93...it's been mediocrity to decency...nothing better.
@jdoolsiu Yes, and you can blame it on the coaches, all of whom since Lou Holtz have been mediocre at best. i suspect things will be different with Kelly.
Unsungherofful: Learn your language and people might be more likely to pay attention to what you have. In the meantime, ND beat UM on a corectly called play. They fact that JJ and his players were not used to losing just made them sound like crybabies.
@fooseven You are wrong dude, after cleveland caught the ball an Irish player put a hit on him jaring the ball loose and the Irish recoverd! I have seen this play many times and the ref's made the right call!
@tommerrigan1956 gary reached out with the ball and broke the plane; should have been a TD at that point before the "fumble"
gary had injury trouble with the rams, walsh just never had the NFL arm. I don't think ND fans want to talk about NFL busts, though...their list tops everyone!
Editorialists are expected to refrain from misrepresenting positions with which they disagree. This you do not do. You wanted Miami to win, so you see Gary's play with jaundiced eyes. The cameras, refs, & any intelligent fans clearly saw what you refuse to acknowledge: Gary blew it and just wasn't that good. And PLEASE, don't make injury excuses for him. Players suffer injuries. As far as busts, ND has had more players drafted than Miami. At least man up and admit Wals was an NFL bust.
@tommerrigan1956 I didn't "want miami to win" because I never saw the game live...the clips I have seen are pretty clear, however. The call was considered controversial even at the time, before the advent of replay and hindsight. As for Walsh, he was taken in the supplemental draft so hard to say he was a "bust" because he (unlike, say, Rick Mirer) was not expected to be a franchise guy. Jimmy Johnson liked him but I'm not sure other NFL people were high on him at all.
@fooseven Whether or not you saw it "live" is irrelevant to the outcome. Replay CLEARLY shows the Gary play was close, but no cigar. Even Miami fans, in retrospect, admit Gary was overrated. The game was the first that year that Walsh was sacked. Flatly, ND put it to them. Mirer sucked, but did not come out of college with Walsh's hype. Miami was good; ND was better. And Miami never produced any NFL QBs the equal of Montana or Theisman. At least be honest in your evaluation.
@tommerrigan1956 ND may have "taken it to them", but it was still just a 1-point game. a great game between two great teams. I disagree about walsh getting a lot of "hype" out of college; especially when you say he was rated higher than mirer, who was the #2 overall pick! Montana was a great QB but I never cared much for Theismann; he benefitted from a great coach in Gibbs and a fantastic OL and running game. Miami's best QB was probably Jim Kelly; he had a lot of guts.
@fooseven Sorry to delay in replying to your last comment.
Walsh had a great college career, as opposed to Mirer. As mentioned before, he won 16 straight games for the U before playing ND, and the ND game was the first time all year he was sacked. Mirer was the number 1 rated HS QB, but never lived up to expectations even while at ND. ND seems to have a habit of attracting great HS QBs who play OK at ND, and then really suck in the pros, eg. Brady Quinn and, currently, Jimmy Clausen.
@bw7497 Probably all hometown fans feel that way. In the 88 game however, the Cleveland Gary call was the correct one, Steve Walsh demonstrated just how overrated he was, and Miami was not used to playing a team of ND's caliber.
I couldn't agree any more with you. I was very lucky to see this game and other great matchups. Sadly it will never go back. Miami in 1988 played a incredible schedule , no way they could do that now.
This was the game that got me hooked into College Football till present day.
ND had SC's number through the Holtz' era, although we won his last game there.
ND gets good recruits, we get great recruits
ND has a threat of snow during October, November, and December, plus those those frigid days they must walk to class. No parkas at SC. Yeah, yeah ND has values. Gee, no other team ND played lived its values like,O, let's see: Army? Namy
Recruits from Florida choosed ND because we have better weather than even the
I don't think that the series of games proposed to begin in 2013 can ever live up to the ones in the late 80's. I'm a Miami fan and don't know that both teams will among college football's elite.
So I guess you guys think Andre Brown caught that pass on 4th and 7? If the 'Canes will send their players to class, I think ND might play them again. Then again, after joining the ACC, the U (you do get the irony of calling UM the U, given the fact that UM players couldn't care less about the degree, right?!?) hasn't done much.
@canefreak2001 Quit your whining. i'm an SC fan, don't like ND, but even i recognize ND was the better team that day. Why? Because they won, moron! 22 years later your crybaby act won't cut it. Steve Walsh was one of the most overrated QB's in college football--EVER. And Cleveland Gary sucked, did nothing in NFL.
What does UNC, UF, S. Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama have in common. Hmm, let's see, that would be all under NCAA investigations. How is that for college football powers.
@skinch22 the NFL agents are to blame as well for these problems. Notre Dame will never be back to where they use to be; they're living in the past. What player from Southern California,Texas or Florida would want to go to South Bend?
@madrecka Check out the ND recruiting list from the last several years. One of the reasons USC, Texas, and Florida dislike ND is because they do steal away their players.
What in the blue hell are you talking about?Notre Dame won this game because of a blown call that should have been rightly ruled a touchdown for Miami.enjoy obscurity because that where USC will be for the next 10 years!!!!
dude, do you even know how badly miami shat on notre dame? my uncle, an ND fan, went down to the orange bowl for the '89 game, and everybody (including random ppl on the street) took verbal shots at him, for no good reason. i'd like to see the series come back too, but miami shoulders a lot of the blame.
and as far as kicking ND's asses, look again my friend; Irish lead the overall series 15-7-1, including the last laugh in '90.
@Herecometheirish09 It was a day that will live in history. you should see a clip called "Irish toughness", provided by legendsofsouthbend. It's a great perspective by Rocket Ismail, regarding what led up to this game. They forget to mention that the teams fought for nearly 30 minutes, the police were called in, and broke it up with billy clubs. Lou Holtz was knocked to the ground. Go Irish. The rivalary is renewed in 2012 at Soldier's Field.
I respect ND but how many titles have they won in modern times? All sports have that team that wins alot of championships when the sport is growing. Who cares about a bunch of wins from 40 years ago.
hey shithead, they have won 3 national titles in the past 40 years. 4 or 5 counting the two that were robbed from them in 89 and 93. Eat shit and die you loser.
ND not the best team right now, but has best program, history, tradition, fight song, uniform, location, etc. Most national champions, Heisman winners. Hopefully, ND will return to national elite status that has been missed since Lou was coach. We miss you Lou.
At least we graduate people, at least we have players taking legitimate courses, at least we go to class, at least we have more attractive women than those cows you have. Keep it up before we rip your nike endorsement from your asses! (have a nice day) Go Ducks!
GOD MADE NOTRE DAME #1...............MIAMI MADE THEM #2.....damn i wish Notre dame would grow some balls and schedule us again..the convicts would love to kick some catholic ass again!!!! GO CANES!!
if u actually watch the clip youre right it shouldnt have been a fumble. it should have been an incomplete pass cuz he never had possession of the ball and instead of notre dame getting the ball on the 5 or wherever they get it on their own goal line so consider yourself lucky
To my knowledge this is still the most watched college football game in television history...It was like 24 million people

I respect ND but how many titles have they won in modern times? All sports have that team that wins alot of championships when the sport is growing. Who cares about a bunch of wins from 40 years ago.

ESPN does and NOTRE DAME WILL NEVER DIE GET OVER IT

hey shithead, they have won 3 national titles in the past 40 years. 4 or 5 counting the two that were robbed from them in 89 and 93. Eat shit and die you loser.
tangwich1 2 years ago

This was a classic game...and I got to look at that "fumble" again
OhioStmarine...the Buckeyes don't need a blackeye from you...and what does Ohio State have anything to do with this game

Thank goodness CBS is still using this theme 20+ years later. It by the way, was first used for CBS' Super Bowl XXI coverage.

@thrawnrulz68 - Wish ABC still using its theme from 1995 and thank goodness some places still know that Tradition still matters in college football

It is one of the grestest college football game ever played. The Irish team and coach of 1988 need to be the team of 2008.

first college football game i ever saw. i was 7, and this made me a notre dame fan.

got any more clips, either from the pregame or the game itself?
Firebirdfrenzy79 3 years ago
Refs gave the game to ND
NWAfan 3 years ago
ya alright pal explain that one to me
doeupiqojei 3 years ago
Where the refs called Cleveland Gary's fumble on the 1 yd line when it clearly wasnt. It was the difference in the football game.
umcane79 2 years ago
if u actually watch the clip youre right it shouldnt have been a fumble. it should have been an incomplete pass cuz he never had possession of the ball and instead of notre dame getting the ball on the 5 or wherever they get it on their own goal line so consider yourself lucky

Greatest game of my life. I was 7 years old and still have my ticket stub from that day! I get chills every time!
