What I don't get is that if they know this is the bug homeworld, why don't they just drop hordes of those non-radioactive mega bombs all over the surface and then send MI to clean up what's left. At the very least it'll wipe out roughly half the bug population.
@TheLordmep have read the books? they cant just bomb a planet, they are there to understand the bugs, and to get as many as they can alive you wont get that by bombing, and they are underground, regular bombs wont work.
Actually, they're both based on a real-life VTOL craft that never went into production. And, also, physics; there's only so many ways you can put a ship like that together and actually have it work. The way those two are shaped is one of those few.

They don't use nukes or high powered weapons such as that because Sicon would actually like to USE the planet after nits cleared of bugs - not bathe in centuries worth of built up radiation pools and wastelands
Dude...this is some distant (I assume) planet occupied entirely by enemy forces of which there is no such thing as civilians or society which we care to save/rehabilitate afterward. Use the planet? Have you seen all the other human-untouched planets they've come across? I think possible resource/colonization use for the planet is very much the least of their concerns when it comes to a galactic war -_-
To summarize, who the hell would care about practical uses of some distant bug-infested homeworld. Nuke the damn thing! But alas, that wouldn`t make for as interesting or extended a series. Hence the completely retarded, wasteful, and difficult ground invasion. A sane real-life military would not do this in this situation. Orbital nuclear bombardment = 0 loss of human life and a vast saving in time and resources.
"Nuke it!" - the solution for all small-minded people.
Have you ever thought that humans could have the opportunity to settle on the planet, for a number of reasons? Strategic location, farming, precious minerals et cetera)?
Nuking a planet mean humans wouldn't be able to live there either, after the bugs were cleared out - that's the reason they always sent in the MI
Yes, but not nuking it would cost thousands of irreplaceable MI lives, all for a planet in a galaxy full of millions of planets. Simply wanting to settle there is an obsolete reason for not nuking it.
Have you ever thought thatdespite for your own views, that by not nuking a planet, such a planet could be stategically important in later campaigns in the war, in which the MI and their counterparts could use as a base of operations against the Bugs (if they ever succeeded in cleansing the Bug homeworld?

My thoughts exactly, wtf this is futuristic space warfare against an entirely hostile distant planet. Just nuke the whole damn thing! It'd take all of 10 minutes. In fact, they could do the same to other planets they discover which only have bugs on them and nothing else of apparent usefulness.
Seriously, I didn't like a single one of these shows. They make the bugs weak and lethargic, and the humans gods. I would've liked it better if they kept it R or better yet, NC-17, because this just isn't starship troopers without dismemberment. It's too goofy; The alien's feet hover at 9:15.
damn! this show is alot beter then the movie. i can't wate to see wut hapens now that thay have gotten to a batel that realy hapend. lets see if it is beter done.
'Can't shoot what I can't see.' As if the visor dangling in front of your helmet wasn't a dead give away... Did the plasma burn fry her helmet? And how did they get out of those drop pods so fast?
Yeah, its not like Klendathu is strategic or would make a viable base. I'd just strap a dozen of the biggest warheads together, find the deepest canyon on the planet and blow it in half.
I figure a blast big enough to crack a planet in half would destroy 90 to 99% of the bugs, especially the big ones. Maybe some of the Warriors would live, but they aren't a threat if they can't leave the planet.
Probably since they are bugs, lots of NBC Warfare weapons wouldn't work. Radiation wouldn't do diddly, and the closest they came to chemical was that NP-7 stuff that was basically Super Strength RAID. And with their biologies so different, I'm not sure if they could come up with anything that would work on them. But, that's also why they keep capturing as many bugs as possible, to find stuff that will kill them. I stand behind my planet breaker idea. The bugs left alive wouldn't be a threat.
I hear these people all the time that "I wish it were real gunfire!" They're pulse rifles! The weird laser noise is a linear accelerator, or railgun. Also, the lines you see may be tracers.
Since an M4 rifle shoots the 5.56x45 round also known as .223cal. I would agree that it has very low power lets say againts something the size of a deer or a bear but that's only in the effect of stoping power a 5.56mm would still kill the bear from bleeding wounds.
One question how big are the arachni bugs the size of a human,a small car, tank what? Still the pulse rifles are very poor even with a 7.62x51mm you can stop a car by hitting the engine block with one or two shots
Actually it should be a 1Lt. per platoon that's 50 men one Master sargeant and one sgt.per squad with a corporal assisting they might also have lance corporals for half-squad, a squad should be compose of 12 to 13 men half a squad is a team or detail depending if you're infantry or cavalry. The difference is method of fighting cavalry fights on the move infantry holds or assaults a position, when combine it becomes a deadly force cavalry protects the flanks of the infantry
Oh wow I remember this show, loved it so much, but I hated the sound of gunfire from the marines' rifles. I wished it had the sound of real conventional gunfire though.
Actually, a big enough asteroid might do the job... against most of the bugs anyway. Lots of big enough asteroids would wipe out the majority of the bugs on Big K, with only the deepest tunnels left mostly intact. It might also give the bugs the bright idea to bomb Earth with asteroids as well.
During the Cold War, the two superpowers, USA and the USSR had enough of a nuclear arsenal that we could kill all life on the surface of the planet.
Why wouldnt SICON have the same? Its not like they crap out on the budgets. I mean, look at the equipment each trooper has, the fleet of ships they can field, the expensive guns, armor, ammo, dropships.
What possible reason is there that they cant afford a few nukes that they probably have from out times?
Actually they mention this in the book, maybe the movie as well.
The reason is simple, you can nuke the surface of the planet till you have nothing left and it won't do any good as the "queen" is deep below the ground. To win this war you have to send down troopers and peel the planet like an onion one layer at a time.
Now if they had a death star grade weapon that can reduce the entire planet to rubble in one shot then a manned invasion is a waste of resources.
And besides...you think earth has all the resources that they need for all those ships and suits and weapons? If they just start smoking planets, they could lose valuable resources for the rest of human kind, or turn a planet that could have supported more terran colonies into a wasteland. The bugs own to many planets to just drop bombs, nukes don't solve anything, especially in an inter-planetary war like this one, as they say "Troopers Count"
Earth should have lots of resources, planets are huge rocks of basically resources and living space. And even if for some reason Earth is off limits for mining or whatever, the asteroid belts has resources to last us billions of years, and so do other planets, just not as long.
They say Troopers Count not because they are low on resources, but because they care about their soldiers. Same thing as our real world armies who have the "No man left behind" ideology.
Is it just me, or is Carmen becoming a worse pilot as the show progresses? She was fine to start with, then in the Zephyr campaign, she hit an Icicle, and in this she gets hit by plasma. It's not like you can't see it. IT GLOWS BRIGHT BLUE.
No, she got hit in the book, due to the increased amount of fire. I have played enough flight sims, (Star Wars, Star Trek, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000-X). Also, realize they were going through the atmosphere, there isn't alot of maneuvering ability, and your basically going at it headon. Notice, just before it hit, she adjusted, as far over as possible, so it barely hit. It could have obliterated them, but she avoided it. She was also self-confident, unlike most previous crashes.
is this after the starship troopers movie series or before? :P and why is there rico and diz in here?

There's the tiny tick looking ones.

There's the ice bug, which is the size of a giant asteroid (they're apparently planet destroyers).

There's those bugs you see on the Skinny planet that one time. That look like tumbleweed, but unroll into big centipede looking things.

That's about all I can think of off hand. I might have missed some.

if i was head brass i would just NUKE it and be doen with it =)
XxfearlissxX 4 years ago
Yeah, its not like Klendathu is strategic or would make a viable base. I'd just strap a dozen of the biggest warheads together, find the deepest canyon on the planet and blow it in half.
gphoenix51 4 years ago
And have a two floating rocks in space filled with bugs?
Roneified 3 years ago
I figure a blast big enough to crack a planet in half would destroy 90 to 99% of the bugs, especially the big ones. Maybe some of the Warriors would live, but they aren't a threat if they can't leave the planet.
gphoenix51 3 years ago
Why have they never used NBC warfare on the bugs, is less messy with less colateral damage and there's no geneva convention to deal with either.
lobonegro4 3 years ago
Probably since they are bugs, lots of NBC Warfare weapons wouldn't work. Radiation wouldn't do diddly, and the closest they came to chemical was that NP-7 stuff that was basically Super Strength RAID. And with their biologies so different, I'm not sure if they could come up with anything that would work on them. But, that's also why they keep capturing as many bugs as possible, to find stuff that will kill them. I stand behind my planet breaker idea. The bugs left alive wouldn't be a threat.
gphoenix51 3 years ago
Yea I'm with the super strength RAID chemical bomb instead. Aerosol can that shit

I hear these people all the time that "I wish it were real gunfire!" They're pulse rifles! The weird laser noise is a linear accelerator, or railgun. Also, the lines you see may be tracers.
Halo1138 4 years ago
Yeah and imagine a M4 against a bug...lol that won´t do mutch damage to it except makin it really mad^^
Mezmerize20 4 years ago
Since an M4 rifle shoots the 5.56x45 round also known as .223cal. I would agree that it has very low power lets say againts something the size of a deer or a bear but that's only in the effect of stoping power a 5.56mm would still kill the bear from bleeding wounds.
One question how big are the arachni bugs the size of a human,a small car, tank what? Still the pulse rifles are very poor even with a 7.62x51mm you can stop a car by hitting the engine block with one or two shots

why is are there privates, sgt. the lt. i dont get it. i understand like 2 sgt. and 1 lt per squad but it doesnt make any sense to me.
roboshark3 4 years ago
Actually it should be a 1Lt. per platoon that's 50 men one Master sargeant and one sgt.per squad with a corporal assisting they might also have lance corporals for half-squad, a squad should be compose of 12 to 13 men half a squad is a team or detail depending if you're infantry or cavalry. The difference is method of fighting cavalry fights on the move infantry holds or assaults a position, when combine it becomes a deadly force cavalry protects the flanks of the infantry

Why they dont just send tons of misseles????????
victorbiller123 4 years ago
think about economy and money...
can you afford tons of missiles?
with fuel?
with some suicidal guy to actually send them?
I THINK NOT
then again theres always 1% chance...

Actually, a big enough asteroid might do the job... against most of the bugs anyway. Lots of big enough asteroids would wipe out the majority of the bugs on Big K, with only the deepest tunnels left mostly intact. It might also give the bugs the bright idea to bomb Earth with asteroids as well.
latexsanta 3 years ago
During the Cold War, the two superpowers, USA and the USSR had enough of a nuclear arsenal that we could kill all life on the surface of the planet.
Why wouldnt SICON have the same? Its not like they crap out on the budgets. I mean, look at the equipment each trooper has, the fleet of ships they can field, the expensive guns, armor, ammo, dropships.
What possible reason is there that they cant afford a few nukes that they probably have from out times?
RojOdio 3 years ago
Actually they mention this in the book, maybe the movie as well.
The reason is simple, you can nuke the surface of the planet till you have nothing left and it won't do any good as the "queen" is deep below the ground. To win this war you have to send down troopers and peel the planet like an onion one layer at a time.
Now if they had a death star grade weapon that can reduce the entire planet to rubble in one shot then a manned invasion is a waste of resources.
nevzilla 3 years ago
Actually, they say that they have Nova bombs, which "crack open a planet" or something like that, but that bomb was developed later in the war.
RojOdio 3 years ago 2
And besides...you think earth has all the resources that they need for all those ships and suits and weapons? If they just start smoking planets, they could lose valuable resources for the rest of human kind, or turn a planet that could have supported more terran colonies into a wasteland. The bugs own to many planets to just drop bombs, nukes don't solve anything, especially in an inter-planetary war like this one, as they say "Troopers Count"
Wolfbaye 3 years ago
Earth should have lots of resources, planets are huge rocks of basically resources and living space. And even if for some reason Earth is off limits for mining or whatever, the asteroid belts has resources to last us billions of years, and so do other planets, just not as long.
They say Troopers Count not because they are low on resources, but because they care about their soldiers. Same thing as our real world armies who have the "No man left behind" ideology.
RojOdio 3 years ago
y dont the fleet blow the planet but than again they are under constant plasma fire
viper750 4 years ago
Is it just me, or is Carmen becoming a worse pilot as the show progresses? She was fine to start with, then in the Zephyr campaign, she hit an Icicle, and in this she gets hit by plasma. It's not like you can't see it. IT GLOWS BRIGHT BLUE.
Rosstopher223 4 years ago 3
No, she got hit in the book, due to the increased amount of fire. I have played enough flight sims, (Star Wars, Star Trek, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000-X). Also, realize they were going through the atmosphere, there isn't alot of maneuvering ability, and your basically going at it headon. Notice, just before it hit, she adjusted, as far over as possible, so it barely hit. It could have obliterated them, but she avoided it. She was also self-confident, unlike most previous crashes.
Mathadar 4 years ago 3
She's not worse. She's getting a little bit better.
Although she DOES crash in every campaign...
