They used the L-39 because Eclipse owned one and the flight characteristics are very similar to the Eclipse.The shield is NOT blacked out but it is "pilots honor" to close your eyes when the "upset" is being initiated and then open them and recover by instruments or other visual cues.This isnt as much testing ones ability to recover using instruments,its primary purpose is to give pilots a feeling of what it is like when the aircraft is "upset" and possibly inverted when entering wake turbulance

Forgot, is the top of the shield blacked out? Upset or unusual attitude recovery is typically done with minimal visual cues.
