The europeans made it economical but finally abolished it on moral grounds, but the industrial revolution played a big factor in it also. What actually made it a black thing was the fact that even after the europeans abolished it the african kings kept the slave trade going. The destroyed African civilisations I had in mind were mainly north African but I think the damage went much, much further.

@futurepast1 i dont see what difference that makes? if you kill someone they dont care whether you did for religious reasons or not. the very idea of slavery shows that the arabs thought the blacks (and the slavs) were beneath them. They raided the villages and captured the people and bought them to the coast where they were sold to whites. Slave trading was common practice since the middle-ages and was not racial oriented. The europeans made it economical but finally abolished it on moral grounds, but the industrial revolution played a big factor in it also. What actually made it a black thing was the fact that even after the europeans abolished it the african kings kept the slave trade going. Moderate Islam has been practiced on a wide scale in West Africa since before the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Kings of West African kingdoms often traveled east and brought Islam back when they returned. Americans rejecting Christianity and turning to "the religion of their ancestors" aren't necessarily wrong when they choose Islam

@ritchloui Well, 'white on black' slavery in America definatley wasn't the most brutal or large scale form of slavery throughout history... in fact, many Africans were better off in civilized society where they had food avaliable to them and sanitary living conditions. Slavery can be traced for thousands of years, as far back as Ancient Egypt. In those days, it was acceptable to kill, rape, starve or work your slaves to death... and it was also common; so I would definatley think that's worse.

@futurepast1 i dont see what difference that makes? if you kill someone they dont care whether you did for religious reasons or not. the very idea of slavery shows that the arabs thought the blacks (and the slavs) were beneath them. Al-Dimashqi said that they were of dim intelligence and the moral characteristics found in their mentality (the zanj) are close to the instinctive characteristics found naturally in animals. So i guess you had that type of racism on the arab front as well.

They raided the villages and captured the people and bought them to the coast where they were sold to whites. Without the assistance of African and Arab slavers the success of the slavery industry would have been much more difficult. Black people were bought and sold by their own race too.

Today its not, except in Africa and Asia. The part that many blacks living outside of Africa refuse to recognize is that slavery for many races was an acceptable practice by "everyone" in the world at that time even by their bretheren. White people were the first to recognize it was immoral.

As regards the fate of the Amerindians in the northern continent (all the others had been enslaved or slaughtered by the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese) their fate was sealed when in the mid 19th century HUGE numbers of Catholics arrived in the north too. Then the gloves really came off and they were ruthlessly expelled from their lands. They had lived alongside settlers for 250 years till then.

What's the meaning to "have a choice"? The problem was that like some historians say, they had no sense of fraternity, they kept fighting with other tribes. They used to catch ppl of other tribes & sell them to white people, who were basically there to do business, and sell their things. look, i understand you. you keep that relative idea that "they had no choice" because they were slaved by the other tribes and had to be sold to someone. That's right, you are right. But you have to get beyond That. What makes them do this behavior? Why slaving people then selling them to misbehaved souls. I was talking about the black people who sold the "slaved" people & you answered me "they had no choice", how could they have no choice??? U were answering the wrong question!
