The one of the right is a Chinese lute ( 琵琶 Pípá), a Alto Ruan (中阮 Zhōngruǎn) is in the middle, and the guy is playing a Python-skin drum (蟒皮鼓 Mǎngpí ɡǔ).
"Yangqin" has 2 different "spellings", namely 扬琴 ('acclaimed instrument') and 洋琴 ('foreign instrument). Your teacher probably got it confused with the huqin (胡琴) family of bowed-string instruments.
i studied chinese music for a bit, and one of my teachers said that "yangqin" means "barbarian instrument". it's obviously related to the persian santur, and it's no surprise that the music sounds like it's from the middle east. just like the chinese pi'pa
Bullshit. yangqin means 'exotic instrument'. 杨/洋/Yang means foreign/oversea but never 'barbarian', and 'qin' means intrument, just like guqin, liuqin, gang qin(piano), etc.
It is from persian santur.
IMHO Pi'pa is totally original China invented, it appears at least before Tang dynasty
well my teacher was chinese, and she said "barbarian" which basically means the same as "foreign" if you look at the attitude of the chinese courts at that time. they were very chauvinistic about their superiority as a culture compared with the west. she said the pi'pa was also based on persian lutes, though she said the moon lute is a wholly chinese instrument. sorry to piss you off, but history is history
IMHO, Yangqin was introduced to China in Qing dynasty, at that time the word 'Yang' is changing it's value from 'barbarian' to 'oversea', like YangHuo, YangZao, etc.
Anyway you know what YangQin means now :-)
ps I'd like to contact your teacher, could you kindly ask her for permission giving me her IM/Email? Thanks in advance.
Hi my name is caleb. i'm 21 years old. A blind girl killed me 3 years ago. She stabbed me in the heart 5 times with a knife when I was in the shower. Paste to 15 songs or the blind girl will come and kill you the next time you take a shower.
I see Persian and Chinese share similar instruments!

this made my day..this hammered dulcimer sounds very close to the iraqi santour. the scale is the equivalent of arabic hijaz.

great playing, not sure about the double basses though and the drum seems rather to western?

What specifically are the 3 intruments beside the YangQin player? (2 stringed, 1 drum) Thanks...

The perfect way of introducing someone to this, the most beautiful instrument in the world! I couldn't explain how much I love it...

I would definitely agree with that.
A poor performance can really scare ppl away from an instrument =\
