This probably really confused people about what synesthesia is. It totally does not work like this. The records don't have a colour, the music if he was listening to it might. Or if smell triggered colour, then all of those records should have the same colour. Or if sight triggered colour, again they would have the same colour.
Synesthesia is latin for mixing of the senses. You can't listen to fruit or vegetables it is not specific things. Only one sense to another or multiple senses.
Synesthesia isn't something to envy or pity. It just another way of seeing and experiencing life. People prefer and excel in different areas based on the type of synesthesia they have. I personally have music synesthesia but yet have a different case than many other documented cases. Everyone sees different things and experiences it in different ways. It's not always actual colors from the spectrum. The people who have the most similar cases to myself are Tori Amos and Pharell.
@SKGBoston Agreed. I have synesthesia (grapheme-color and sound-color; and like you, different than many cases) and I don't think it makes me special. I just see the world a different way. Honestly, I never knew I was different until I was "diagnosed" - sometimes I still think the world is playing a gigantic joke on me, because I don't understand how people hear sounds and see words without colors. xD For me, explaining what synesthesia is like is like explaining the color red to a blind person.
I don't think color - grapheme synesthesia is as rare a phenomenon as supposed. I mentioned to a friend that I hate turning 33 because it's a glossy double red and she told me that her son is experiencing the same problem I ocassionally had in primary school, saying numbers instead of colors (3 + 2 = green etc.). 2 more people at the dinner party out of only 8 said their numbers also have colors and they thought everyone's had. So maybe many of us just aren't aware of it
they got most of the verities of synesthesia... sometimes i don't know if i should feel bad for ppl like this or if i should be jealous... they get to experience apart of the world that most of us can't fathom possible! a part of the world that we can't really explain to others without the aid of drugs... even then ppl who use drugs don't experience synesthesia at the same level as those who are synesthetic.
i never realize how different my life would be without my synesthesia until i watch this and read the comments. It must suck not having it. It helps me with so much and I don't even realize it
@CreeperTerminator there's a lot. i can figure out music by ear really easily because when I hear a certain note, i "see" a certain color associated with it. I "hear" movement (something moving makes like a BLOOP sound, it's hard to explain). When I think of a date, month, day of the week, number etc I can feel it in the space around me. Months go in a circle in front of me ordered counter-clockwise with january/december furthest away. Numbers are like a timeline going left to right in front
@CreeperTerminator of me, same with years. the current year is always closest to me. but when i think of years like 935 and 3023, it's like i'm "zooming in" on that part of the timeline, although it feels far away, like i'm looking at it through binoculars.
Numbers/letters all have personalities that never change, like 5 and 8 are guys. two digit numbers are married that have two personalities that work together.
I "see" noises as well. there's so many combinations it's hard to explain all
No it doesn't effect memorizing things badly. Synesthesia helps me memorize things like phone numbers, words to a song or simply facts of history to help me on a social studies test.
If you are looking for quality, original, hassle free, inexpensive, legal soundtrack music for your next Youtube video or short film....try "Rumblefish Friendly Music" Just follow the link in the "About Me" section on my page. Only $1.99 per track. (Some good songs...not just library music)
I have synesthesia and I just found out today. I was at a book store and there was a book about a girl who had synesthesia but she kept it a secret. That confused me because it said she saw shapes letters and numbers as colors and I thought everyone saw that I asked my mom who they would make a book about that and she freaked out when she realized I had it. She calmed down when I told her didn't have much of an effect except for memorizing things. Also when people talk I see the words written o
If you guys really had this condition, it wudnt seem "strange" at all, or even "cool", a persons reality with synesthesia wudnt consider it strange cuz our reality is just as "cool" or weird as theirs is to us....
That's cool :) im doing an art project thing where I have to create something with meaning behind it and I chose Synesthesia because i think its really incredible, ive been doing research on it and every case of it is different! comment on this if you have it and what some of your senses are? it would really help <3
@TheCheeseinacan Synesthesia can involve any senses. For example, a synesthete might see the word "plane" as mint green or the number "4" as dark brown. There are also synesthetes who hear sounds in response to smell, who smell in response to touch, or who feel something in response to sight. There are some people who possess synesthesia involving three or even more senses, but this is extremely rare.
@anshuhunk You watched a simplified illustration of how Synesthetes view the world. Our brains link two or more senses together; for instance, the old man in the video sees things in response to sound, and the kid at the table hears noises in response to colours and forms.
brilliant! i have a mild case of synesthesia, ive always associated letters and numbers with genders (eg: 2, 3, 5, 7 are males, 4, 6, 8, and 9 are females)
i know its weird but i really dont know what it means
@librenglaro For me 1, 3, 5, 9 are males and 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 are females. Just thought I'd share. For me numbers also have a colour and personality. For example 4 is blue, and girl, and she's insightful. 9 is a dark red/purple, male, and self-loathing.
@hello10577 No no no 0,1,4,7,8,9 are males, 2,3,5,6 are females! =p I don't know why, but love this.. is just a feeling, no further meaning or interpretations ^^
Srsly, where is the LOVE button. I have been fascinated with synesthesia myself and spent a while looking up everything I could find about the condition once I discovered its existence. I am a teacher so I wonder if I will ever encounter a student with synesthesia. It would be a trip to tell a parent about!

@izzythe25th Wow! Do you see it as a gift or a nuisance? How does it effect daily life? Would you take it away if you could. And most of all, how does it effect your enjoyment of music. Can you tell you've lit up my curiosities? xD
@lockergr Haha, nice to know you have a large amount of curiosity! Well, I don't really see much when it comes to sounds (sorry if that disappoints you!), but I do see colors when I think of letters and numbers. I'd say it's a gift because it helps my memory a lot, though it is irritating sometimes to see letters and numbers that don't correspond with the ones in my head. As for daily life, I don't really give it much thought because it's as natural as breathing. I hope that helped somewhat! :)

@Mrlutsfer Dont cry bescause you dont understand it... It basically shows the wierd stuff the disease can do to you and your five senses... Mixing them around... If you want this felling, take heavy doses of LSD.
Why call this a disease? I don't believe it's actually a problem for people. Often times it can be quite useful. And I know this is the internet, so saying this is probably pointless, but don't recommend people take large doses of LSD. Anyone dumb enough to do it for this reason probably won't find it, but someone might be curious enough and manage to get some. It's a fucking amazing drug, but it needs respect.
I swear the kid sniffing the records are saying the colours in Cantonese but the translations aren't matching up... Is that wrong or is it trying to convey another form of synesthesia? :P
I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be mean to those who have synesthesia, but I just don't understand what's going on in this video. I do know that synesthesia is a condition where you can hear colors and letters are colors and people are music, but this video has so much going on that I am getting confused... can someone help?
@wolflover8765 It is illustrating synesthesia, where one sence can be linked to another. For instance, some see colours when they hear music so this video shows that by colours coming out of the speakers. Some smell colors and that is why the boy is sniffing records and saying colours. I don't believe this video is supposed to be scientific as much as arty and open to interpretation. Hope that clears it up a wee bit!
@nrobin96 I disagree that it's a disease, it's part of the spectrum of normal. More to the extreme, but still normal. Most people with synesthesia don't realise they have it until they say something other people don't get or they hear about it somewhere. I didn't know until I took cognitive neuroscience that not everyone sees numbers as having a gender and personality, which is my synesthesia. And no, I wouldn't give that up for anything, even if it let me do better in math :)
What kind of messed up world is this where you listen to food, eat books, smell music for it's color and watch sound?

I swear the kid sniffing the records are saying the colours in Cantonese but the translations aren't matching up... Is that wrong or is it trying to convey another form of synesthesia? :P
TrinaKatracia 9 months ago
@TrinaKatracia the translations do match. there are just different ways to say some colors.

My experience was seeing peoples voices as wonderful glass masks, around their faces.... I am realizing the masks, one of these days.

I have a strong case of Ordinal Linguistic Personification, and it's no where near as cool as this.

its cool....hahaha...but then it is still undeniable that SYNESTHESIA is a disease...it may sound amusing but synesthesia is really a disorder... :-)
nrobin96 10 months ago
@nrobin96 Most people that have synesthesia say they love it and wouldn't want to get rid of it..

@Ahkoto
Most of it was brutally taken from me. You got that right...
PigWithAWig 10 months ago
@nrobin96 I disagree that it's a disease, it's part of the spectrum of normal. More to the extreme, but still normal. Most people with synesthesia don't realise they have it until they say something other people don't get or they hear about it somewhere. I didn't know until I took cognitive neuroscience that not everyone sees numbers as having a gender and personality, which is my synesthesia. And no, I wouldn't give that up for anything, even if it let me do better in math :)
