  • I made this vegan, and added the veggies that you added, and in my crockpot I added water, and a chicken cube to make the broth, along with a can of hunts, and chi chi beans, then added the veggies and cooked it for about six hours, then added the pasta before serving. Turned out super good!

  • Thanks Chef John! I made this for Christmas lunch and everyone loved it! Just one problem I ran into was I had to adjust the amount of water constantly. Some other changes I made were I used spinach, because Swiss chard wasn't in season. And I used red kidney beans instead of cranberry beans. Oh, and I added more pasta. About a cup instead of 2/3 of a cup. Thanks again! The recipes definitley a keeper!

  • This is better than burgers. :) similar like Chinese or Asian noodle ideas too. While we love make noodle longer, means symbol of long life for birthday celebration. :) Good way to throw noodle into soup too to get free flour soup, plus. Good for winter use in breakfast idea. :) Many people rinse noodle to cold , so lost the flour soup though.

  • I didn't have any of those little tubular noodles so I used miniature marshmallows instead. I think I found the wrong way to make minestrone.

  • no rules about minestrones. it's just something between a soup and a stew. barebone is just any regular mildly thick stew with added pasta to give it some punch

  • My family is Egyptian/Italian and any time we make a pasta soup, we fry the dry pasta in the aromatics so it gets golden brown then we add the soup. It completely changes the taste. It's so good sometimes we just toast pasta and add chicken stock and eat. I bet that would work here, will try!

  • Chef John, you usually recommend serving food in heated bowls, or on heated plates. How do you heat plates up when you are cooking at home?

  • I'm cooking this now. The panchetta ham was 2.00 for 1/4 lb. at my local Italian deli. It smells delicious. I bought the cole slaw mix in the bag, and added a cup of that instead of buying an entire cabbage. Swiss chard was available as well as All the other ingredients. I live in Queens. Thank you!

  • @phinx102 you can leave out the pasta and use only the bread...but for the chicken I don't know...maybe it's better to use pork meat

    Don't you overcook your vegetables this way? Isn't it better to put them all in so they're done the same time, instead of cooking them one after the other? I'm still learning how to cook though, so my idea is probably not right, but I'd just like to learn why this is the right way to do it.
