Once I threw a small lizard into the pond next to my house where a pair of mallard ducks were swimming. The lizard was trying to swim to the shore, but the female closed in on it and shook it around in her mouth like a dog would with a squirrel until it finally got in a position for her to swallow it. I'll never look at mallard ducks the same way, lol.
that mallard drake is completely different than most, especially when its winter and their feather plumage is at its purest, there is no white ring on the neck and and the breast is grey, it should be brown
I love these little dabblers...there is a female who has come to our backyard to make her nest three years in a row now. She sits on the eggs for a few weeks and then we watch the ducklings grow up all summer...so cute!
The mallards up here in the middle of alaska don't feed off the surface of the water, they dive for fish fry. Looks quite hilarious seeing orange feet sticking out of the icy river.
@AgileHProductions Maybe Halobrandoncox meant that the reason mallards live in Canada is to f@#$ the Canadian's faces?
Just kidding, :D. I always find it funny when people try to insult someone yet do it in an unintelligent way. I like these documentaries Agile, you do a great job.
@Tarnishable I guess you're right. That would be a good reason to live in Canada. :)

Hello again AgileHProductions, your bird mini-documentaries are wonderful! Because the mallard is a familiar and well liked bird in Canada, you should consider posting this video to Canada’s Got Treasues, which can be done by joining our YouTube group (/group/TresorTreasure). It would be made available on our channel and website. Help celebrate Canadian diversity!
Very good. I've been working with wild mallards in Seattle, Washington for about 9 years now (studying animal behavior). Never mind working with them, they have taken me without question into their family and they are my little friends (pets, if you will). I'll post a silent video clip of them here as a "reply".
i hear geese in the back ground. since they like cheerios i going to put some in my hand and when they eat it i will grab them and ring their necks to take home and eat.. thanks HUGEBRANE for the tip
@HUGEBRANE Cheerios is not a good diet at all for ducks. Can lead to many probelms such as malnutrition and slipped wing. Try something like cracked corn.
theres a female maliard with babies every year in our condo buildings courtyard pool. The groundskeepers built a little ramp so the babies could out easier onto the grass. Im not sure if its the same mother or one of her offspring because its been going on for almost 10 years now
Aw that's why when we had a pair around our house we didn't see the male for a few days then we didn't see th mother with the babies after they hatched. Thanks for the video .
Another nice video. One small additional point - I've seen mallard chicks diving in my local park. I noted it because of the dabbling nature of the species generally, but while still in the "fluffy" stage they do dive sometimes. (And following from someone else's comment below, cases of homosexual necrophilia have also been recorded in mallards!)
That drake looks like it is a hybrid it doesnt have the distinct brown/burgandy breast that the drake should have with a white ring around its neck...
I'll have to somewhat disagree with the narrator on that part where he said that the drake only temporarily pair bonds with the hen until she lays her eggs. I've seen few families of Mallard Ducks in Ontario that actually have both parents looking after the ducklings. While most drakes leave the hens after she lays her eggs, there are some drakes that don't. It really just depends on the father's agenda. Some Mallards actually pair-bond for life.
Very good! I've been working (unofficially) with a flock of mallards hee for the past 8 years and they have taken me in as their alpha-male. One blonde mallard (seen in my silent video) once very early in the morning purposefully took me to her nest which I thought very odd. Mortality rate for ducklings at this lake is sky high. Four other species of waterfowl have left this lake and I am considering asking Fish and Wildlife about that. Many of the ducks are still elsewhere which is very odd.
But you forget to mention, in your readings and dictations, that mallards are ferociously sexual birds which are promiscuous, savage, and homosexual. I've witnessed them attacking both other irds and even humans in their quests to dominate in a sexual frenzy. Such is that they can piss even Canada geese off to the extent of moving a whole flock from a chosen area! *See my video of mallards mating in low def mobile phone video* (Seriously, I'm not joking at all.)
Mallards are fasinating and beautiful. They come to our local park lake in the spring. Some of them breed--even with the large white, domestic ducks that have been left there. By the way, they do not leave after the eggs are laid. They stay to protect the female and nest from rogue male ducks and predators.
