how about taking out the cubes as well as the number cards of the tray so the child can see clearly?...

Since the cubes are different colours i cant help but think that this may in facty confuse the child. The Number Rods show the quantities in a physical representation so much clearer and for matching qunatity to symbols the cards are there to help with that
