  • Why didn't you just use the golden knife?

  • I think "the good ending" is average because as you can see, Dracula comes out of his grave. By Dracula coming alive at the end of that, that suggests the job wasn't finished. The "bad ending" is what I consider to be the best ending because Dracula doesn't come alive - even though Simon is not shown at the grave. The bad ending would be the one where it says Simon couldn't survive his wounds, but Dracula doesn't come alive - even though the town is still cursed.

  • I'm here because of AVGN? Who's with me? :D

  • Cool video, thanks!

Though, how is Simon dying in the battle better than him living and ensuring eternal peace?

  • Hmm... The "Average" ending seems more like the Bad ending, and vice-versa.

  • @candlewax122 It's widely excepted that these are in reverse order for some reason... The "Best" Ending where the hero lives has the worst text and Drac coming back to life where the 16 day+ ending has the kindest "you really won" type of text... It's really bizarre :)

  • This is my opinion but the "bad" ending to me is the best

  • if ya used the Golden Knife you could have stun locked Dracula making this fight a cake walk

  • if you use the Golden Knife that Death Drops he never leaves his platform and doesn't even move. simple easy stun lock trick.

  • I never understood why Simon buried Dracula on a grave, he didn't seem to care much about chopping his head off in the first game and then putting him back together just to burn him down to ashes.

  • stand in the middle and attack

  • Does anyone else get the feeling that the developers mixed up the Bad and Average endings by Mistake?

  • I also remembering beating Dracula really easily by using holy water.

  • I remember finishing the game to get the bad ending but I threw a diamond after killing Dracula and got the average ending. Am I remembering this wrong?

  • The average endings "colors" look more appropriate for the Good ending ...but that's just me :P

  • So, you actually fought Dracula? I always just kill him before he gets to move.

  • I always remembered the 3rd ending from when I played about 20 years ago on the original Nintendo. Now I have it downloadedo n the wii and it has the 2nd ending. I never understood why they changed it.

  • very good ends..

  • the bad endings not so bad compared to the average ending. im going to go ahead and take my time.

  • the bad endings not so bad compared to the average ending.

  • Does Simon actually die at that point in canon and make way for Trevor? I can't remember the chronology, it's so convoluted at this point. Either way the one where he dies and it says the only hope to remove the curse is with a young man must be referring to Trevor.

  • @necrogenesis1981 Dracula's Curse is set before the original, Trevor is Simon's Great Grandfather. Considering Simon didn't have a son yet (no mention of it is made at all despite the family history already being established), which was Dracula's plan. If he could make Simon die without an heir to the whip, he'd win. However, after this Simon had a son, and then in Super Castlevania IV fought Dracula a 3rd time. So no, the bad ending is not canon. Simon obviously died at some point, uncursed.

  • @MolochMekkane You do realize Super Castlevania 4 is a retelling of the events of Castlevania 1 right? Simon only fought and killed Dracula twice.

  • @necrogenesis1981 Trevor was Simon's father. In Trevor's time, the Belmonts family does not exactly had a good reputation as vampire killers and common townspeople didn't exactly respected them.

  • @necrogenesis1981 no Trevor was before Simon chronologically.

  • Funny to believe that this game started the AVGN's career.

  • @Snipertoaster That's exactly how I thought the endings played out. Apparently, you're correct.

  • 1431-78, that's only 47 years. Dracula is reputed to have lived longer than that.

  • Great game, and I love the final castle song (dunno what it's called). But I've always just killed Dracula by throwing gold knives at him, he usually died before he finished materializing! Now onto the endings...

Konami got it wrong with these endings! The bad ending had a happier narration than the average ending did... And if Simon died, then why the hell do they show him in front of Dracula's grave with the same animation as the good ending?!

And why is Simon there in the first place?!!

  • IMO I like the bad ending better

  • What curse did simon have? Cuz it said "What a hotrible night to have a curse" i didnt watch the whole series

  • @xdloner Basically, the storyline states that when Dracula was killed in the first Castlevania, he put a deadly curse on Simon with his dying breath. So Simon is on a race against time to summon Dracula (whose minions are rampant through Transylvania) and defeat him again.

  • @xdloner After killing Dracula in the first game, Simon was cursed to die a slow and painful death over seven years. This was only revealed to him near the end of these seven years, and then Simon's Quest begins.

  • the battle w Dracula and the music used to scared the shit out of me when i was a kid,i am 31 now.A never saw this colorful ending it looks so nice.Epic game.

  • um how is the bad ending bad okay mabye simon dies

but i dont get the average ending they say he dies but is still fighting dracula im confuesed

  • i dont get it, how is that a bad ending?

Simon Dies in both the average and bad, whats the diffrence?

  • @PsionicGamer The bad one's not in color...?

  • @PsionicGamer in the "average" one dracula still lives. or atleast his curse. the good ending is only good for simon. the bad ending is best for everyone else since dracula dies.

  • @PsionicGamer In the average ending you can see him kneel in front of the grave, meaning that though the curse eventually killed him, he still lived for a while after the battle (perhaps enough to train his descendants), while the bad ending implies that he died just after.Plus, well, it's black and white, so it's gloomier.

  • @PsionicGamer well... i thought simon didnt die in the good ending and he was fully healed,in the average ending he was still a bit banged up,and in the bad ending RIP simon

  • WHy is it running all slow? And yes, I can tell by the music. Secondly: Diamonds, man, Why bother with the Flame?

  • @GryffinDarkBreed It's running at normal game speed. Why not fire? I have played through this game more times than I can count over the many years since it came out. Why on Earth would I do it the same time every time? heh

  • @TRStrider74 The game play is however the music sounds slowed.

  • @GryffinDarkBreed

That game used to lag all the time.

  • is it me or does the Belmonts get stronger with each generation

  • @LeonardLayten

Well, yeah I mean the strongest version of Belmont would have to be Julius the man who actually killed Dracula for good.

  • @LeonardLayten

    what aboout Trevor Belmont

  • Is this the first game with multiple endings

  • @CounterClockWise000

It's the first in the series to do so. I'm not so sure about in video games period, but that's a very good question.

  • Wait a minute. aren't the average ending and the bad ending pretty much the same? (I WANT AN ANSWER ITS MAH BDAY)

  • For some reason I've always liked the bad ending the most. You rid the world of dracula at the cost of your own life, it's just cooler for a nes game :P

  • These endings really make little sense...

-So the 'best' ending shows Simon Belmont surviving the battle and removing the 'curse', but shows Dracula also surviving by showing us his hand. So that's kinda the 'you survive but so does Dracula' thing, not terribly bad but not really a 'good' ending IMHO.

  • @jcdenton2k i think the part where his hand comes up from the grave is when 100 years has passed again thus its the current belmonts duty from there

  • @jcdenton2k Here's what I think the endings should be:

    Good ending=Average ending

    Average ending=Bad ending

    Bad ending=Good ending

    At least IMO.

  • @Snipertoaster

I'm in complete agreement. I never understood why you have to royally suck at the game to get the most fulfilling ending.

  • @Snipertoaster yeah Dracula rising from the grave should be in the bad ending

  • @Snipertoaster True

The good one he survives, but dracula still lives so it is average.

Th average one, not only does he die, but it was for nothing because dracula lives and the curse still remains

The "bad" one Simon does die, but so does dracula indefinitely (And his curse).

  • @sonicgreg Well, the good ending would also soon lead the storyline into the beginnings of Super Castlevania IV.

  • @Snipertoaster I agree with you on that one.....

  • Wow, the average ending seems like how Castlevania III started immediately although in the good ending, it kind of took Dracula longer to come back.

  • Not only is Dracula dead but the encounter has been terminated...

  • Strange, the third ending might be the best ending:

    1. Peace restored

    2. Dracula does not revive

    3. Remembered forever for your bravery

Cons: Gray sky. But no Dracula!

  • So, in the bad ending, dracula stays down, but the good ending gives dracula a third chance? What the fuck?!?!?

  • ummmmmmmm...

why is simon belmont sad about dracula dead bcause hes trying to kill him so im pretty sure he wants dracula gone

  • ?????????

  • wow i remember this when i was a kid. i always liked this game. that best ending is a motherfucker to get, cause you have to beat the game FAST and that makes it alot harder. but ive got all 3 endings and i like the ending where dracs hand comes up the best. :)

  • Talk about slow rolling text. I practically fell asleep watching these endings.

  • It still looks like the endings are mixed up, even though it depends on game time. The first ending, Simon beats Dracula and dies in the process, but Transylvania is free from the curse. But then Dracula's hand comes out of the grave. Is he...? The second ending seems like the worst one. Simon beats Dracula, but dies and the curse continues. The third ending, Simon beats Dracula, lives through it, and the curse is gone. But magic and happiness does sound better than peace and serenity.

  • Looks to me like the "bad" ending is better than the "average" ending because it at least doesn't say that Simon Belmont died.

  • They should have put a tombstone in for Simon on the bad ending since he died immediately after killing Dracula.

  • if u ask me teh gud end is teh bad end because dracula lives

  • totally japenglish :D

  • Why did the music play at a slower pace on the Pal nes?

  • I'm going to do a playthrough of this game with one game genie code on: inf. Energy. Call me a baby, but I don't wannah dah.

  • @rokstar9000 You'll die anyway thanks to water :)

  • @icydreamers so, in the the good ending: dracula was temporarily killed, but Simon lived, so he came back. In the average ending, Dracula died, but Simon lived so he came back again. In the bad ending, Dracula and Simon (and therefore the whole Belmont line) are dead

  • Actually Sonia Belmont was the very first to defeat Dracula not Trevor. She is believed to be Trevor's mother and Alucard to be the father though it's not confirmed.

  • @Toastermonster1

This was before Koji Igarashi joined the Castlevania Team, he made Sonia "Non-canon" what means she doesnt include into the "real" castlevania timeline, but before Igarashi joined the Team, Sonia was an official character and trevors mother, and alucard his father what means that all belmonts after trevor are part of the tepes bloodline what is in my opinion a gay thing and i m happy that igarashi removed sonia "bigtits" belmont out of the official storyline

  • Sonia Belmont was the first to defeat Dracula not Trevor it's believed that she was Trevor's mother and Alucard was the father but it's not confirmed.

  • the bad ending to me is better than the average ending Lol

  • i beated the game (with password) for my first time and i got the shitty ending >:(

  • @mattias005 Well, You Must Have Used The 3rd password.

  • 0:45 Simon's kicking some ass

  • Why are people saying that Simon dies in the slowest ending? I see no evidence to that effect. Am I missing something?

  • @agiar2000 I agree, also in the "good" ending Dracula apears to come back meaning you didn't really destroy him, but in the "bad" ending he doesn't come back at all.

  • if dracula is resorected for 100 years then why in castlevania 4 he is still alive unless the curse wounds could be the imortality myth that when dracula dies for the fourth time i castlevania 4 the curse is lifted i think its that way cause if he died then there would be no such thing as Richter Belmont in castlevania dracula x

  • @XEHANORT1000 Castlevania 1, 4, Chronicles, Vampire Killer, and Haunted Castle all tell the same story. Simon fights Dracula twice (Tying with Christopher for most times a single Belmont has defeated Dracula), and lifts the curse when he defeats him in Castlevania 2.

Also, 100 years is the time it takes for him to resurrect naturally. He's had quite a few premature resurrections, such as in Harmony of Dissonance, Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin, etc.

  • @XEHANORT1000 Castlevania 4 is basiclly a remake of the first Castlevania, I wish they could have remaked this game too.

  • aculy the ad ending isnt that bad it just means you didnt try that hard

  • Who is the next belmont again leon?

  • @kortland12 Actually Leon was the First to fight Dracula so its either

Richter(The Greatest supposedly) Or Some unamed Belmont after Alucard killed Dracula

  • @Neojoey360 Leon never actually fought Dracula. Lament of Innocence served as an origin story, but Leon and Dracula never actually fought. Trevor is still the first to actually fight and defeat him. Also, Julius is stated to be the most powerful Belmont in his enemy bio in Aria of Sorrow.

And to answer Kortland's question, the next to fight him would be Juste, Simon's grandson.

  • @JesusHowardChrist Actually Sonia Belmont was the very first to defeat Drac.

  • @kortland12 after simon ther is Richter great great granson of simon

  • ugh, that text goes SO SLOW!(ending text)

  • What young man are they talking about 4:13? So in the bad ending did he die right after he dealt the finishing blow to Dracula?

  • @twilightwindwaker exactly, Simon died instantly, after he killed Dracula in the bad ending

  • so in short (and to make sure this is right)

Good Ending = Dracula's dead and Simon lives... then we see dracula rise up telling us "HEY GUYS, WE'RE MAKING CASTLEVANIA 3!"

Average Ending = Simon kills dracula but later dies from his cursed wounds

Bad ending = Simon died in ensuring safety from dracula's curse

    soo

good = saves the world and shows sequel meaning he needs to do it ALL OVER AGAIN!

average = saves the world and later dies a slow painful

bad = dies saving the world

    all 3 suck!

  • @Ultrox007 actually, Castlevania 3 is a prequel

  • I played through the whole game up to dracula's castle my first time in 6 1/2 game hours without a walk-through, but then got lost in the maze and then couldn't beat him for a million times, so I got the crappy ending. He's so BLOODY hard compared to the rest of the game;)

  • @kalavic just throw Holy Water at him and you'll be fine, if that really DOES work.

  • Avgn also did this.

  • Just a quick reminder of time requirements to get the three endings:

    Good Ending--0-7 in-game days.

    Average Ending--8-14 in-game days

Bad Ending--15 in-game days or more

  • in a way, the 3rd ending is the best because Dracula is vanquished forever, even though Simon dies.

  • Is Simon praying to Dracula?

  • Little known facts:

    1. The translators messed up the order of two of the translations. The WORST ending shows a gray picture with a DEAD Simon but only talks about you "DEFEATING DRACULA FOREVER", and the AVERAGE ending shows a happy day with Simon at the grave, but says that "SIMON DIED FROM THE WOUNDS AFTER DEFEATING DRACULA".

    2. The BEST ending (fastest time) is the only REAL ending, part of the real storyline, and shows how Dracula rises from the grave in time for the next game.

    Enjoy.

  • This is one game that I actually would like to see remade, if only for them to fix some very legitimate problems-- especially the damn translation / text. "The encounter with Dracula is terminated"? This game could have been so much better...

Incidentally, did they ever bring back going to towns and such in the later games like Order of Ecclesia? I haven't played that one. I got so damn tired of just being in the same damn castle with the GBA games...

  • Simon's quest... I never beat it, until this february, found console with game in closet and begun to play, got "bad" ending, than tried to see them all here. Well i think bad ending is better than others :) I don't know, may be because i love, if something ends with "not-so-happy-ending" like this one.

  • so you have to beat the game in 36 minutes or less to get the good ending? wow

  • Here's a way how to beat it...just throw the flames the second he comes up and fight continue to do it and he will be immobilized and you;ve already won

  • "The ending sucks too"

  • Dude you're supposed to use the gold knife/dagger (whatever its called) to kill dracula it takes like 2 seconds.

  • Great Upload for the Ages!

  • Sooooooooooooooooo Sloooooooooooooowwwwwwwww

  • i got the average ending

  • how are the endings bad, average, and good?

  • So wait, Simon ends up dying in both the average and bad endings? So instead they should have call them the good, bad, and sad endings.

  • How is the bad ending bad?

In the good ending, Dracula survives,

In the average ending, Simon dies,

In the bad - Supposedly Dracula is gone forever and Simon is okay! Why would he care about giving Dracula a proper burial?

  • @SuperNESFreak

No, Simon Belmont dies in the bad ending. When they talk of him being remembered for his bravery and courage, it's in a eulogistic sense... at least from what I can tell.

On the other hand, it is implied that Simon Belmont still saved everyone on the black-and-white ending, while it's implied on blue-sky that he couldn't even do that. I'd say that black-and-white is the average ending. Though it's anyone's guess which is canon.

  • @SuperNESFreak because the way we treat our dead is what separates us from animals...we (myself not included) think that there is peace for those who have left us in this world, and so we give them (no matter who they are: good, evil, whatever) a final resting place

  • That's weird, I always saw the "bad" ending as being the good one, since it doesn't mention Simon dying, and neither shows Dracula alive.

  • Hrmm...maybe the Good Ending is where the "canon" storyline continues, but the other endings are where the "non-canon" ones go? For instance, for the Average Ending, maybe that's where both Castlevania 64 games take place, after that.

And the "young man" they're talking about would probably be Richter, not Trevor. Trevor is Simon's Grandfather. Ricther I'm not sure, but I know for a fact he comes after Simon.

  • Why does Dracula look like Death?.. In every other version, he has at least two forms, why'd they jip us on this one. We go through all the monotony of digging his ass up and this is all we get?... I love this game, but I hate all the stuff that's missing from it.

  • Has anyone ever beaten Dracula without a sub weapon? There's a video I'd like to see. I've tried it, but always get my ass kicked...

  • I think you got the average ending and the bad ending mixed up dude

  • Actually, they are in the correct "time to complete" order. 0-7 game days for the good, 8-15 for the average, and over 15 for the bad. I have added a explanation of how the in-game time runs and how to get all the endings to the videos description. Enjoy. :)

  • i did 8 something and still got the best ending. however the mid ending i think was the best

  • @TRStrider74 while it may not make sense to people, the good ending is necessary to keep the series the series going as dracula needs to keep coming back. It didn't make sense to me at first but then I got and commended Konami for pulling a fast one on the gamers. Pretty lol-worthy if you think about

  • @TRStrider74 I would say the average ending is still bad. Simon still dies and when Dracula comes back in 100 years he would be able to completely destroy humanity.

  • @Luigi84289 And that's where Richter and Alucard come into the picture.

  • @scottyboy584 More like Konami had it mixed up

  • So, I quess the Castlevania Sequals continue trough the good ending of this one? Sorry, I am not a huge fan of Castlevania and still confused how Dracula comes back every God damn time.

  • It is explained in on of the games that as long is there is darkness in mankinds heart he will be reborn

  • I'm thinking it's more of a rip of Albinoni: Adagio in G Minor, written in the 1700's.

  • How do you trigger the different endings?

  • @kommisar Its based on the time it takes you to beat the game.

  • How do you get different endings, I'm playing the game right now and I'm in the castle just before Dracula, you know the one with the floating face. Well I was just wondering.

  • @lionheart238 you have to beat it in 8 days to get the good, 16 days for the average and more than 16 for the bad ending

  • how do you get the endings like that. In aria of sorrow. It was different. You just have to survive? I tthink the endings are switched, too, maybe.

  • Hmm... maybe Dracula's centennial resurrections are tied to the Belmont family line.

If Simon Belmont beats Dracula and lives without a scratch, Dracula must also live.

If Simon beats Dracula but dies later, his descendant (the young man) must try to break the curse or just carry on the Belmont tradition of killing Dracula again and again.

If Dracula and Simon (and the Belmont family) dies, then Dracula stays dead forever.

  • then explain castlevaina dawn of sorrow?(that theory doesnt really apply to this game,u should know if uve played it)

  • @BaronGrackle

Sorry, but that's not possible. There are premature ressurections in which a Belmont wasn't around. Examples: Order of Ecclesia, Shanoa, not a Belmont and Dracula came back. Legacy of Darkness, Cornell, not a Belmont and Dracula came back. Besides, killing the Belmont Clan would leave Dracula with no one to stop him because he can be revived every century, there's no stopping that unless the source of his power, Castlevania, is sealed away for all times, which happened in AoS.

  • did simon die in that bad ending?

  • simon dies in the average and the bad ending. the average ending he dies from the wounds from his fight with dracula. the bad ending he dies from a curse that made him ill throughout the whole quest. if you beat it quickly enough for the first ending, he lives.

  • Good ending: Dracula - dies ; Simon - survive

Average ending: Dracula - Survive ; Simon - dies

Bad ending: Dracula - dies ; Simon - dies

  • @Mada2595 dude, Dracula dies in every ending

  • Sure looked like Dracula survived the 'good' ending.

  • Can you believe that I still have my NES. It is a great system.

  • I couldn't believe that Simon Belmont lost his life anyway.I own most of the Catlevania series and I had been working on this one for 3 weeks now.I finally finished it last night.Kinda pissed me off that he died in the end anyway.

  • Well, Simon is a mortal, and he will die, eventually. you Know.

And about that, this game is about the egoistic fight of Simon! a real hero would have sucumbed to the curse without lifting a finger, if the only way to avoid that fatal omen was to resurrect Dracula

  • Am I crazy for thinking that this Castlevania game is probably my favorite out of the 3 NES Castlevania games? I'm probably in the minority for thinking this.

  • @dtr2684 nope, I think it's the best too

  • forgive me if i seem dense but if poor Simon gets it in the teeth anyway whats so bad about the bad ending? "The battle has consummated. Now peace and serenity have been restored to transylvania and the people are free of Draculas curse forever, and you, Simon Belmont, will always be remembered for your bravery and courage." personaly i think that's beautiful and a damn sight more reasuring. knowing me i'm probably missing something.

  • In the 'bad' ending it says the curse is removed forever and everybody is happy, the end. In the 'normal' ending, it says Simon died of his wounds and implies he didn't fully break the curse. In the 'good' ending, a hand pops up, blatantly showing that Dracula's not defeated. So it seems the bad ending is actually the best, and vice versa. =\

  • konami probably did this because they knew most poeple in 1988 wouldn't beat the game fast

  • The 'bad' ending implies no more Castlevania games! That sounds like a horrible ending to me!

  • it's like Baron said:

If Simon Belmont beats Dracula and lives without a scratch, Dracula must also live.

If Simon beats Dracula but dies later, his descendant (the young man) must try to break the curse or just carry on the Belmont tradition of killing Dracula again and again.

If Dracula and Simon (and the Belmont family) dies, then Dracula stays dead forever.

  • wait so someone tell me why is it so differen't about the endings they all seem the same to me

  • This doesn't make sense.

At the end of the best ending, Dracula reaches up from his grave...but shouldn't that be at the end of the Bad and Average endings instead of the Good?

"Simon Belmont has saved the world forever, his blood and sweat penetrating the ground to create magic and love and peace and joy for all time. But Dracula will just come back anyway so forget all that happy stuff I just said."

    ???

  • @DocFunky dracula bringing his hand out of the grave is him basically saying,

"Screw me dying i want a sequal!!"

  • What the heck is on Dracula's gravestone? It looks like a chick in a bikini.

  • wow you actually like this game i can't belive it

  • Of course I like it, it's Castlevania, what's not to like? I dont subscribe to most critic reviews that this game was bad because it was not like the original. I could really care less, the game on it's own was fun to play, just like any others in the ongoing series. There is a black sheep in just about every long lasting family of games, this one is considered such in the Castlevania series by many, to me however it was just different. Something I actually like in a game.

  • well i was born in 1998 and im a really good gamer i usually beat ma' games in 1 day even the Rated m ones thats right im almost 11,im 10 and i play m games i am getting a nes soon from ebay and on my wish list for my mom and dad is this game i want to try it out and the other ones too ( castlevania 1 for nes and castlevania 3:dracula's curse) and a few other nes games i will get with my nes milon's secret castle and world gp also goal so i milon's secret castle will be okay too i guess thanks u

  • Heh, I hope you enjoy your NES, I sure did back in its day. I still play the NES on a pretty regular basis. I actually have the NES, SNES, and N64 all hooked up to a small TV and play them when I get the chance. To be perfectly honest, my older 8 and 16 bit systems get more play time than the modern consoles do.

  • @serealkiller4 thats funny on your profile it says your 24, imagine that

  • @TRStrider74 Actually, this was my favorite Castlevania back in the days. I really long for a remake of this one.

  • @TRStrider74 Actually, this was my favorite Castlevania back in the days. I really long for a remake of this one.

  • @TRStrider74 it maybe be fun but the only thing that dissapoint me is that box! that fucking BOX MADE ME QUIT THE GAME LIKE WHEN ITS NIGHT YOU CANT HIT B TO EXIT IT NO YOU HAVE TO READ THROUGH IT THATS ANNOYING AS FUCK! same thing in the morning. and i havent even play half of the game. (i play this game on an emulator btw with my ps3 controller)

  • @johnsnake71 Yeah, a lot of people hated having to sit through the day/night cycle message every time it changed from one to the other. I admit, it would have been nice to be able to skip it. Though back in the day, it was not so critical, most players just accepted it or used it as a quick break for the fingers. Hours of gaming on the old school NES gamepad's had a way of cramping the fingers. haha

Anyway, it never bothered me, though I had a few friends that got annoyed by it.

  • Damn, I only got the bad ending. I'll have to get in on the virtual console and try again.

I'm curious where Gabriel from the new game fits into the storyline of Castlevania
