His band playing 60s covers, opened for Hendrix. And, even Jimi was impressed at how he could cop every one of his licks.

However, he went on to discover Freddie King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and such 'less is more' type guitar players, and changed his style. The end result is what we know today.

I hear you. What's great is when you see him now, he plays a ton of both styles, plus now he does his Jimmy Reed Highway 'Eddie Taylor' style thing too, and just plays the shit out of all of it, it's insane how deep, both soul and technique wise, JV is. My all time favorite player. Once when I saw him at Antone's he said he's 'just' playing BB King and, as you mention, Johnny Guitar Watson, which was the only time I've ever heard him talk on stage about what he's playing.
