  • I love cats 3 but I have to say I was more amazed by how cute this girl is than the cutie cats in this video. So much that it took me to replay the video a couple of times to notice the cats... Lol...

  • snow leopards rock! and so do all the other cats! amazing! i never knew that some big cats could purr!

  • I absolutely love Cats of all species and sizes...I am more passionate about the The Big Cats! Aweee so cute..I love the sounds they all make..the purr of the cougar is so cool to see a big cat that large purr! God Bless Big Cats!!

  • Lions are able to pur, I have heard it before. Sounds like a motorcycle!

  • that's very informatif thank you

    i'll donate :)

  • purring is so relaxing :)

  • It would be so much better if YouTube consisted of such high quality videos!

  • misc must be that cat is horny, it sounds like our female housecat when she is in heat.

  • I love big cats :3 and all cats.

    Yay cats!

  • The misc sound sort of sounds like a dubstepish sound

  • Cat lover, and cute <3

  • You are soo hot! Host more vids!

  • Lion: Boo!

  • "Lesser cats"? Nah, I'd take an ocelot over a lion in my house any day.

  • I think the "miscellaneous" sound of the tiger means it knows how to speak wookie.

  • @apharot i think it sounds more like a tauntaun

  • like...

  • I want to cuddle with all of them

  • "Miscellaneous" haha nice (spelling?)

  • My cat said 3 times, "I am not a lesser cat, I am not a lesser cat, I am not lesser cat," purrrrr

  • The Tiger's miscellaneous sounds a lot like a Toyota Scooter.

  • @WildCat2313 I'm sorry dear troll, but the anatomy was not in question. It was whether or not a purr needs to be on both the inhale and exhale to be.a true purr. House cats are considered to have a true purr because of such, and I made the point that my male cat only half purred. So in that context I suppose he wasn't truly purring at all?

  • miscellaneous

  • Love this, so interesting!

  • Vote Up if you just want to see if that girl purrs.

  • Another informative, yet entertaining video :)

  • The obvious debate is whether the big cats roar vs purr.... purring is just a self soothing behavior...

  • my black cat lucio can squeak like a mouse :3

  • She didn't mention anything about panthers.

    RACIST!!!!!

  • @luzian the term "panther" refers to jaguars, leopards, and cougars depending on who you ask. All three were mentioned.

    POO-BRAIN.

  • How close can these people get to the cats?

  • @TheLuchez all video is shot through the enclosure wire

  • I had a male house cat that only purred when he exhaled, so I don't know why that's debatable as a true purr

  • @PiokoMew and i am sure u know the true anatomy of your cat to know for sure

  • Only one big cat and purr and its the cougar ^^

  • @LraCroft The cougar is a "lesser cat" so it does not purr, the "great cats" purr, lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar. Purring is just a self soothing behavior of the lesser cats.

  • @WildCat2313 Lesser cat? i'm sorry but i think your wrong. its a big cat. At least its the information that books gave me. Prove me wrong. And i know what purr is. Not always its a self soothing behavior.

  • Comment removed

  • I`am high but let me tell you this honey , no one give a rat ass if some fucking wild cats purr.... i need 100.000$ if you can help please contact me

  • Wait...bone growth and hearing?

  • Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Lions do purr, and housecats are capable of growling. Lovely video.

  • 2:34 LOOOLOLOL

  • @SlakjeJasper YEAH LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • She is so hot

  • At 2:13, the cougar sounded like a monkey mixed with a domestic cat! Haha :)

  • U guys are great. Luv it.

  • who gives a fuk if they pur or not?

  • Jeez, Joseph can be so scary.

  • They roar like the veliciraptors in Jurassic Park :)

  • yes, some big cats CAN purr. the more well known big cats (other than cheetahs), like the lion or the tiger, cannot purr. but they all do show their happiness in some way. however, even though all cats show their happiness in some way, house cats cannot 'growl' like big cats can. well, actually, wild cats are a better term than big cats, because not all wild cats are big, but i understand that the phrase 'big cat' is more common.

  • Actually in reality you answered your own question! All cats Great, Medium, and small purrrrrr.................in one form or another! Yes, though to make your point you need to get more sound (as in audio) data on this phenomenon you probably need more microphones strategically placed in enclosures and turned on all day and all night! =)

  • @LydiLouiKats lesser cats purr, big cats roar

  • so if a cat is having a nap on someones lap and theyre stroking him hes having a near death experience or a traumatic experience? ok then.

  • @LanzoEmilia Cats purr when they are content or happy AND when they are having a traumatic experience, meaning they do so in both situations...

  • do big cats hiss

  • @SyCoSnIpEz yes, all cats hiss, and big cats usually 'growl' in a cat way, but they can indeed hiss.

  • This was interesting and well-presented, thanks!

  • Thank you very much for this instructional video, complete with beautiful images of big cats !

  • that chuffing kiiiiiiind of sounds like a very breathy purr

  • lions and tigers can purr when they are small only......

  • @BigCatRescue

If the jaws of the domestic cat got injured/damaged in some sort of way, Would it effect there purring/meowing?

  • @TheCheeseguy123 no, the bone is set back from the jaw

  • OMG I want a snow leopard now :) <3

  • This is great and all, but your cats look really pissed in captivity.

  • What do we think? We think you are super cute.

  • they are*

  • i hope those cats are happy and not 'purring' because their behind bars

  • My cat purrs at the vet. Not because he likes the vet. Quite the contrary, he's really really mad! And no, he's not growling, it's definately purring.

  • big cats don't purr.

  • I'd like to make this chic purr. :)

  • like if devour brought you here

  • i think nothing ! Have no idea how i ended up here in the first place

  • 1:33 The Greek god of war in a form of a cat. XD

  • What about bears? Can bears purr?

  • I just had an epiphany. Crazy Cat Ladies are not crazy. Cat purring is said to promote growth and healing, they surround themselves with hundreds of cats to lengthen their lives. It's like some crazy Highlander type shit...but it is kind of crazy to prolong a lonely and desolate existence so, nevermind.

  • @ 2:38 !!! Phew !!!

  • What a marvelous video! Tells me all I want to know about purring.

  • how come big cat don't roar at all

  • kitttyyyyyyy <3

  • Well,to be honest,roaring domestic cats would be kinda scary...but awesome,too.

  • So to summarize:

Cats purr when they are happy; since cats are evil, they purr around death and suffering.

Cats also purr when hurt and this purring it at the same frequency as healing, so cats can heal themselves. No surprise there.

  • OH YEAH them Cougars do purrrrrrrrr....know what i mean?

jokes aside, so if a cats tongue is attached to the roof of its mouth does it swallow food under it? im guessing thats a DUH! but still lol

  • some big cats are built differently, this "may" equal a change in noise and sound. egs, cats have different shaped mouths to humans, which effects their speech a lot to us but to them, speaking is just a symbol or vibration which can be heard or seen from a long distance or short distance away. Such as meowing/purring, these ways can be spoke to the same species of cats. Roaring, is effected by big cats jaws such as the lion/tiger. these species communicate by that. I'm 11, thats what i think.

  • 0:40 balrog in Lord of the rings

  • "So what do you think?"

    "KITTY!"

  • What do I think? Lady I want your job.

  • wow the roar at 0:40! frightful

  • the tiny fence at 2:42 would not fill me with confidence

  • cougar and cheetah lesser cats ?!?!?! REALLY ?!?!!? you crazy

  • @rancorx Comparing cougar and cheetah to lion and tiger, yes the formers are indeed lesser cats.

  • @AdvertChild98 cougars i can kinda see but cheetahs are big they just don't weigh much

  • @rancorx That's preciously why they don't count cheetah as one of the great cats. The four great cats we commonly know are tigers, lions, jaguars and leopards. Cougar, cheetah, snow leopard are considered to be a lesser cat compared to the big four.

  • Is "chuffing" the same thing as "prusten"?

  • So to summarize... do not have cats that cannot purr as pets...

  • @PlaidmanUTube Or.... don't have any wild species of cats as "pets" :)

  • @BigCatRescue Purrfectly stated.

  • @PlaidmanUTube my cat is just completely weird and hes different than any other cat ive ever seen, hes taught himself to pick up food with his claws and put it in his mouth and also he doesnt purr....like other cats, while cats do something like 'prrrrrrrr' my cat does 'mhmmfmhmfmhmfmhmfmhmf' with 'yyyyyyy' behind it...

  • I WANT TO HUG THEM AND MAKE THEM ALL PURR!!

  • I can also make a loud purr. I thought most mammals could... :/ Why can I do it? O_o

  • 0:58: what my cat thinks she sounds like when I wake her up. haha

  • But do cats quack?

  • INSANE camoflage 2:40

  • Nice channel!

  • Miscellaneous sounded like my cat when it's going to throw up! lol

  • Pussy talking about pussy right here !

  • Those cats are so cute but they'll rip you to pieces in a heartbeat.

  • Chewbacca? 0:58

  • I want a bobcat in my house! looks soo cosy to hug with xD would be a problem thou if outside and brings a dear outside the door insted of a mouse ^_^

  • This was a super interesting video! It makes me wonder if our Balinese house cat has a slightly flexible hyoid bone. His purring is significantly louder on exhale and hardly audible on inhale. And he makes the weirdest of sounds, ranging from whimpering roars to distorted meows. He sounds kinda similar to lots of the medium-to-large cats I've seen and heard in BCR videos.

Keep on doing the valuable work you do and posting interesting videos on Youtube.

  • @maililistaalterego We will :)

  • Fascinating!

For many years, I'd believed the so-called 'fact' that cheetahs are the only big cats that purrs! Lovely to know that the concept & function of 'purring' isn't simple! Why should it be?

I'm looking forward to more information as the the purpose of 'purring' as well as better understanding of which cats 'purr' and which cats don't!

I don't actually care about the whys & wherefores of purring. I just love CATS regardless of whether they purr or don't! I simply ADORE the species!

  • awesome video!! but truthfully i just want to see this girl purr

  • Absolutely SUPERB!!! and so well presented. I have known for a few years that the vibration of the large cat's purrrr is the (same) frequency as human bone and tendons.Thank you for the confirmation.

  • What hapeens when you give a lion catnip?

  • @MrSpc4 Some like it, others not so much, check out our video "Q: Do Tigers like catnip" :)

  • Go to the @youtube search page and put down: The Last Lioness (Full Documenatary) HD.

It's a beautiful true story but my point is you hear the Lioness purr and the man narrating actually saying: "He enjoys listening to the African Lioness purr" at 25:45 of that @youtube video.

  • I think big cats purr but at a much lower sound frequency that's beyond human hearing.

  • 0:42 to me sounds like the lion is giving this whole "purring" thing a try...

  • Well...about 10 years ago I got a chance to hold a jaguar cub at a faire. Brought by a proper zoo, mind, but they don't do this anymore. He was not loving the experience. When it came my turn I began to skritch him under the chin and he made a kind of rolling sound, almost a gentle snore. Close enough. I didn't feel the rumble you feel with a small cat but I praised him for making a good sound and he did press his paws against my hand so I guess he liked the skritchin.

  • What about Bean or Thing? :P

  • @Crossa Bean, Thing and Banjo aren't cat species :) They are Binturongs or "bearcats"

  • @BigCatRescue I was just kidding bout them purring :P But I appreciate you telling me though. By the way, which wild cat is friendliest towards you guys?

  • It depends on how you define a purr, honestly. If you do not set a clear cut definition of what counts as a purr, such as the hz levels between them, or whether or not the exhale purr counts.

  • 2:40 Ninja Lion

  • i think that you should purr for me wearing a nice fishet catsuit, sistah!

  • It's pretty impressive to hear a cougar purr!

  • Lion roaring

  • misc noises lol

  • A purrrr-fect lesson and explanation --->

  • I came here to see purring big cats. This video should have been named "Do women ever shut up?"

  • @Clostridiumtetani Her explanations were really interesting for those of us who like to learn something.

  • Wow lions are so sexy :}

  • i'd love to hear the woman in this film purr too.

  • Purr, no purr, I love them all!!!!♡♡♡

  • omg !

  • that cougar is so cute!

  • My kitty at home does talk alot XD we have conversations its great :)

  • When did you guys rescue Cheetahs?!?!? :o

    Cheetahs are so awesome :D

  • @KusH91007 they didn't... or haven't....(yet)

  • @KusH91007 No we don't have any cheetahs at the sanctuary, this was wild cheetah footage that a volunteers gave us permission to use :)

  • I guess it depends on what you call a roar... I've heard a lot of scary noise come out of a domestic cat when really angry.

  • I think this is a great video!!

  • 2:39 ....that scared the mess out of me.

  • I've heard many big cats purr! They definetly purr as well. ♥♥ God, they're just stunning!! ♥♥

  • Very educational little video! Nice purrs from those pumas, too!! :)

  • I think that they can purr, but what is a true purr? This all is based on the point of view

  • "or miscellaneous" that is so funny!

  • Bigger cats like lions, jaguars, and tigers and leopards cannot purr I think based on this evidence

  • okay, whether they purr or not..... you guys do the greater good. My parents live in Hernando County and I visit Tampa when I visit them. You are on my next tour!!!!!!!!

  • I don't know much about the science, but I know that that was absolutely adorable! And I've learnt something too, about the other times that cats purr. Thanks for sharing Big Cat Rescue!

  • i think she should take some clothes off...

    for the cats

  • So what do I think? I think you're hot haha!

  • @2sophista2 Before you call a question stupid, research the question or actually listen to the video as she said the two largest cats known to purr are "pumas and cheetahs" if you do not know what you are talking about it's better not to say anything at all.

  • the bigger question would be... who thinks, that big cats can't purr?...

It's like a question "can dogs bite, when wolves can do?"

so, there are stupid questions :D

  • @2Sophista2 It wouldn't be a stupid question if someone had heard a big cat purred to begin with. Just because the four great cats are part of the feline family doesn't mean they share the same physical function or ability. In fact, they are entirely a different specie from another.

  • I don't know about purring, but I love the sound lions make.

  • What causes a big cat to roar? Maybe you should try it out on your snow leopard to see if they can actually roar.

  • @Sean0fenton Lions roar to mark their territory, all cats that can roar do so when they want you out of their space or feel threatened etc... Unfortunately our snow leopards have all passed away, this was old footage in the video :(

  • @BigCatRescue All snow leopards at the sanctuary passed away? That's very sad. Would you make a tribute video for them in the future? We need to remember them. :(

  • Me asuste cuando aparece el León en el comienzo.. TT__TT

  • Dislike !! .. hahaha

  • My cats purr helps me sleep at night :')

  • miscellaneous is my favorite.

  • Feels like i was in class. . . . but i actually learned something and enjoyed it :)

  • Very interesting video to see and hear the big Cats saying........what.......prrrrrrrrr.....roarrrrrrrr....or in Cat's.....foodddddddddddddd :-))))) ♥♥Jeannette♥♥

  • OMG KITTY OVERLOAD! I love kitties!!!

  • Yes, the snow leopard(s) are in this one! My day just got better. Anyway, chuffing kind of sounds like purring to me. Great video, I can't wait for the next one.

  • My cat purrs while kneading on my bed and while doing so she's not experiencing a traumatic moment, hasn't been injured and definitely isn't near death so I guess the only thing left is contentedness. =)

  • I laughed out loud at the "miscellaneous" noise...

  • This is so intresting that the big cats can't purr, & the largest cat that can purr is the cougar. :)

  • I wouldn't be surprised if they could dance flamenco. You never really know what to expect from them. These being have flawless engineering, if not perfect.

  • they all purrrrh :P

  • A short video explaining the anatomical and behavioral differences between these Big cats - Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Jaguar.. would be a very good idea.

    Great job, Thank you !

  • @MyUserInUtube That's a good idea, will see what happens in the future :)
