  • As a musician who is well versed in Piano and Harp performance as well as music history and pedagogy, this is one of the most beautiful transcriptions of music and it is performed exceptionally well. Everyone who visits Youtube should listen to this masterpiece.

  • this prayer/song should pierce every heart that listens.... and, this should not fade out nor die...

  • OMG...that descant! That sent chills up my spine!

  • Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

    Where there is injury, pardon.

    Where there is doubt, faith.

    Where there is despair, hope.

    Where there is darkness, light.

    Where there is sadness, joy.

  • O Divine Master,

    grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;

    to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

    Amen.

  • I was mesmerized by this hymn the first time I heard it while watching it on TV during the Funeral of Princess Diana...I am still mesmerized by this incomparable version by the Westminster Abbey Choir. Thanks to the Choir, for the arrangement by Sebastian Temple, and to St Francis for the inspirational lyrics...

  • Es ist einfach wunderbar, ich habe das Lied seit Jahren gesucht, und gestern endlich gefunden!

    Ich freue mich riesig!

  • A beautiful hymn and prayer and the words are spot on!

  • Earl Spencer went a little far in his eulogy I am sure most reasonable people would agree in speaking for what the Spencer family could or could not do with the princes. That came from the emotion of the awful and shocking loss. Obviously their control would be limited to nil. Overall, the eulogy was eloquent and beautiful. I am haunted by his closing words to this day and for most of us, I think it captured the moment perfectly.

  • Whenever I feel low & sorry for myself I just listen to the words & I am uplifted.

    Thanks be to God

  • Hve been searching for this one for such long time. I think this is the most beautifull one i ever heard of this Prayer of Saint Franciscus of Assissi

  • Takes me back to assembly at primary school (St Luke's, Canning Town)

  • She deeply loved you Charles Wales

  • WOW...every ones a CRITIC!!!!! Even at this event...SHOW some respect on this page........shut up, if you cannot write anything positive!!!

  • I'm going through some really tough times right now (job loss, broke, foreclosure of my home of 21 years) and I listen to this song every day to remind me I am not alone and God is in charge.

  • @szqsk8 People sometimes ask 'well what has England got that is special?'. Well, apart from her people, she has wonderful churches and amazing cathedrals. She also has church music and a multitude of choirs. Who can listen to this and not be moved? And to you, szqsk8, good luck. Keep going. You are not alone.

  • @szqsk8 Keep the faith my friend; may you continue to know His peace.

  • @lionhearte1

thank you for your good wishes. i am trying to keep the faith but it is soooooo hard. especially when times are at their lowest. it's easy when things are going good, I must say.

  • @szqsk8 , May God bless you. I have been through the same thing. Sometimes we think, I cannot do this anymore. We can. Things will get better. Remember, you are not alone. Many people are in pain and think "nope, this is it" Wrong. Lean on you friends, family and God.

  • @march131958

You are right. Two weeks ago my husband I decided to stop worrying about all of our financial problems and just turn the whole thing over to God. It was a tremendous relief off of our shoulders and now things just this week have started to turn around. Carrying this burden was too much for us to do alone. Thank you kindly for your good wishes.

  • have some respect this from a funeral. If you want to talk about political issuses find another clip to write your oppions on. thankyou

  • this hymn always remind me of heaven ....what an inspiring hymn.......

  • If there was a moment in this service when her soul ascended into heaven, it was while the choir sang the descant of this hymn.

  • i cried while listening to this especially because it was on princess dianas funeral

  • It was that last bit that was amazing! Children really have the natural ability to sing to their hearts content. Beautiful.

  • Oh, stop fighting people! How dumb. You aren't adhering to the song!

This just brought back the whole feeling of that day...I'm an American who just loved Diana .Her death hit us all. Just devastating-+may she rest in peace.+

. Thankx for this post. As a Roman Catholic, I appreciate this song being used & that she respected my faith & was a humanitarian much like St. Francis. And now she belongs to history... And William's wedding day will have a poignancy to it.

  • I love this hymn. I listen to it daily as it is very uplifting. I was raised RC and gave only ever heard it sung at RC funerals. I think its use at Diana's funeral service was a good choice. The choir does it fabulously.

  • My boyfriend's mother passed away last Sunday, March 13, 2011. The funeral was on St. Patrick's Day, and his cousin sang this at the beginning and at the end. I am Jewish, and this song is not part of our worship. However, I can't stop crying listening to this.

  • So very Beautiful. I just love the messege contained in this prayer by Saint Francis. Also, I may be a Presbyterian, but it does say in our Affirmation of Faith (The Apostle's Creed): "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting."

  • Oh Crikey...I just cried all over again....I was in the crowd outside....this still brings me to tears......Poor Bloody girl.....should never have married into our f'kd-up Royal Family..RIP , Sweetie.xxxx

  • Thank You for a Beautiful Video ... The Prayer of St Francis ... A Prayer to Live By Every Second of One's Life !!! GOD Bless You and Yours!!!

  • Esta muy lindo

  • wow its nice to listen to this song again!!! grew up in a franciscan way thought by my school!!!

  • It's inspiration beautiful Song...

  • Nice descant!!!

    Art of simplicity.

  • @chiucc1685 I got chills when I heard that gorgeous descant.

  • Beautiful piece.... Gives me peace... this was just another hymn when i was in school..... now i grasp it's meaning in the complete manner.... thanks for sharing this video....

  • More and more of us are starting to realize there is no god...but there CERTAINLY is music...and this is nothing less than spectacular...well done, gents!

  • Comment removed

  • This is so beautiful.....Just beautiful.

  • Francis was 13th century, well before the Anglican split.

Charles I was made saint during the reign of his son after the overthrow of the puritan dictator Oliver Cromwell.

  • Some people think Princess Diana was murdered, so many comment on the music, but was if she was? It suppost to have been a set-up. Now I never mind my mind up about what I believe, but she was a lovely woman and "Make me a Channel of your peace" was played at my Grandad funeral, it is lovely, but when I watched this video, Diana makes me question again, was she murdered?

  • The problem with different denominations is that they create their own, and often errant, interpretations of those denoms that are not their own and thus creating even more devisions than their should be. After all, we all worship the same God, the same Christ, just with different styles.

  • This is the Church of England, which has always considered itself part of the "catholic" (defn "universal") church, like in the "catholic and apostolic church." Its tradition stems from the early church, just like the Roman Catholics do. Therefore the fact that it celebrates in the tradition of the saints is not new or unorthodox.

  • St Francis was wise...

  • I'm Roman Catholic and am used to hearing this hymn (which is my favorite) at the end of the Catholic funeral mass but I don't agree it's a hymn to St. Francis. It's a hymn to the Almighty God. I find it most uplifting.

  • What a wonderful Roman Catholic hymn honoring the Spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi...Glad that others rejoice, and recognize his contribution to their sense of personal holiness...I cannot imagine a world devoid of The Roman Catholic Church! Amen! Alleluia!

  • @SmartBC90 I agree that this is a wonderful prayer; but it's a prayer BY St. Fracis to HONOR GOD. This prayer in no way honors Francis. If he were here, he'd be the first to point that out to us. His model of Christian obedience and humility is trully inspiring. Peace be with you and God bless us all. =)

  • @ominoreg WELL SAID>>>.HALLELULIA To our GOD forever!!! and PEACE to everyone who believes and have not accept Christ yet...GOD still loves u anyway

  • Absolutely Gorgeous !!!!!! I'm a Franciscan Friar and was just ordained a priest within the Roman Catholic Church.. I'm so honored that the Church of England used this wonderful prayer of our Founder/Brother... Francis of Assisi .. My prayers always for my "Brothers and Sisters" within the Anglican Church. Soon... Very SOON.... I pray that our Churches may become ONE CHURCH !! God Bless !!!

    Fr. John, O.F.M. Cap

    Capuchin-Franciscan Friar

  • @JMOSABRES Amen Fr. may God continue to bless you, your brothers, and your vocation. Pray for me a sinner that my sins may be forgiven so I can join in the banquet of the lamb. Thank you.-Kris

  • @MrBonitaporsiempre - Hi Kris - Thank you for your wonderful and kind words; That means alot. However, you credit me too much haha .. I am just as much of a sinner as you are. Ordained or Laity; we are ALL HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO THE LORD .. Thankfully. we are forgiven through the infinite Mercy of God, AMEN! Of course I will pray for you, but I ask that you also pray for me too as I Serve His Church and minister to God's Holy People.. See you at the Lord's Banquet!! - Fr. John, O.F.M.

  • @JMOSABRES God bless you, Fr. John! I pray you have a long, fun and rewarding vocation in the Lord's vineyard!

  • @JMOSABRES Dear Father John, we are God's children and when He loves us equally, then we must never let our earthly denominations or differences come in between Him and us. This is a beautiful "genuine" prayer by a son (St. Francis) to his father (GOD). My grandfather loved this prayer so much that, this is the first piece of literature, he taught me. On his 3rd death anniversary, i.e, today, I thank him for teaching me the core foundation of life! Let us all be the Channel of Peace! A-men.

  • it's a tad fast. but a beautiful piece. it seems to be sung at funerals a lot.

  • I love Christian hymn songs sung this way - in a choir, full of people, their voices singing together like one melodic harmony :) ♥

  • tks. it gives me strength to carry on...

  • Soooo Beautiful!! Touch deeply my heart and my soul until the tears

  • The prayer of St. has touched the hearts of all that have heard it especially in song. There is a story of how its love and compassion influenced the war on a small island in the Vietnamese war and helped many people.

Dai Uy Hoch: "A Legend In Remote Seas"

  • Princess Diana... such a shame she died.

  • I cried like a baby when I saw this on TV

  • You don't have to be a Christian, a monarchist, or even someone with a particular attachment to the late Diana Spencer (I am none of those), to recognize this as a magnificent performance by the organist and choir of Westminster Abbey, and one which brings the events of that -- however you look at it -- extraordinary day so vividly back to life.

  • This hymn was especially touching at Princess Diana's funeral because this was Mother Theresa's favorite hymn, Princess Diana had dealings with Mother Theresa, and Mother Theresa had died just a few days before the funeral.

  • God, please give me the stregnth I need for tomorrow and each day onward....as my battle begins tomorrow....

This is my favourite song from when I used to sing in church choir in my youth. Thank you for this upload!

  • O what is an eternal heavenly melody! It's bringing abundant meaning of life in exultation. God Bless these talented voices and musicians and the choir master. God bless all those made this hymn.

  • Dear Wonderful folks of taste. You need a casette of the

Favorite Hymns, sung by Westminster Abbey Choir, it's on

    CD #GCMC 4018...recorded 1997 sept: some 20 hymns

    sometimes we Brits do shine.

  • More than the brother's eulogy, more than Elton John's song, more than her favorite hymn (I Vow to Thee...), I really feel that everyone all over the world who took part in this funeral (including those of us who watched it via satellite at dawn in California) came together at the singing of this hyym because this hymn speaks simply of all the virtues the Princess possessed. The pomp, the class issues, the politics and the anger seemed to disappear here--especially at the beautiful last verse.

  • What a meaningful song! It brings out the true Christian spirit.

  • The music to this service was beautiful. The organist did a fantastic job along with the choir. The descant to this piece was wonderful. I know Diana would have been very proud and I'm sure she was listening in her own way. Thank you for posting.

  • I have to agree with your comments about the descant, notyobs, it gave me a shiver through the spine - totally unexpected! So nostaligic too! Another time, another world, eh?

  • The product of a good choir, a good organ and organist in a wonderful acoustic environment: A hymn that doesn't normally work-out transformed into something worthwhile.

  • none of the other renditions available on youtube compare to this. and even if they did, they'd be blown away by the descant.

  • I cry every time I hear this beautiful song!

  • My favorite prayer, just soooo Beautiful (sigh) always touches my heart, brings a tear to my eye, thank you.

    God bless you.

  • What a spiritual song!!!! Come on humanity!!! Let's find peace and share it all together!!!!!

  • This song is a prayer telling of kindness to others. If mankind will just follow this instead of creating great divisions and just treat each other as fellow human beings, it will be a better place to live. We can start now.

  • @adoboworld I believe so too. We shouldn't see each other as different of races or religion. Same goes to our own internal divisions. We live to serve the Lord, we should move and serve the Lord without any division at all.

  • thanks for this great prayer of St. Francis of Assisi. We christians should continue to pray that should strengthen us with His grace to make this world a better place. Great God, we praise Thy Name. Amen!! thanks for sharing.

  • ahh just look at 1.28... even a bobby is busy singing this amazing hymn. What an incredible tribute to an even more incredible woman. Its as if every word of this hymn was written with the perfect image of Diana in mind.

  • Thats one hell of a descant. vip. gy.

  • This was so beautiful. I have always known it to be sung with the descant in the last verse (that's how we sang it at school), but I haven't heard it in many years. I have tears in my eyes right now. I missed the broadcast of the funeral in 1997, this is seriously emotional. I'm sure I would have been a wreck if I'd heard it on that day.

  • Many church organist's simply can not play Make Me A Channel making it difficult for the congregation to sing it, not the case at the funeral of the wonderful princess Diana this organist is just perfect

  • When you say "simply can't play it" what do you mean, that they don't play it in an appropriate fashion?

  • I think he means that this song is difficult to play in such a way that the congregation can keep up with it.. every sentence has lots of words wich makes it difficult to prenounce if the organist goes too fast or too slow.. in this case the speed is perfect.. The organist also the right stops.. It sure is a good organist who plays an awesome organ

  • It's very interesting actually that he went for such a full organ sound, because the lyrics would suggest something more muted, 8ft flutey sounds maybe. But it works really well doesn't it.

  • @notyobs yes it does. Descant would require amplification. More stops.

  • @notyobs yes it does. Full organ sound required for a full congregation sing a long. Descant requires amplification even further albeit not tutti.

  • A stirring and majestic tribute to the memory of Diana. The final, grand chorus takes your breath away!

  • Beautiful, just beautiful. It reminds me of my dear departed Mom who passed away on January 10, 2006.

  • Thanks notyobs!

    It`s a blessing !

  • By the way, the people who own the copyright, Oregon Catholic Press, got on the phone with the Abbey clergy and told them that they were performing it without any permission!

  • The author of this Prayer is Saint Francis. And this song is best to describe Princess Diana's kindness during her life. So long as God's word is spread through this magnificent prayer, the religious leaders are ecumenical.

  • You don't think the Abbey bought the printed music?

  • Don't get caught up in things that don't matter. Accept the truth that God wanted us to hear through this prayer he gave to Francis

  • Make me a channel of your peace.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

In giving to all men that we receive

And in dying that we are born to eternal life

Oh master, grant that i may never seek

So much to be consoled as to console

To be understood as to understand

To be loved, as to love with all my soul.

  • Oh master, grant that i may never seek

So much to be consoled as to console

To be understood as to understand

To be loved, as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

In giving to all men that we receive

And in dying that we are born to eternal life

  • Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me bring your love

Where there is injury, your pardon lord

And where there's doubt, true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there's despair in life let me bring hope

Where there is darkness, only light

And where there's sadness, ever joy.

  • Absolute fantasttc singing and organ. And like every one says the descant is glorious - made me remember the day I heard that Princess Di had been killed on the radio I was covering a night shift and was telling every customer who came in.

  • I noticed that some of the choir boys are wearing the Royal School of Church music badges, especially the head choirister badges. I love the song. I used to hear it in the catholic church I belonged to all the time until I was 17 the year Diana passed away.

  • best song ever written

  • simply amazing

  • Beautiful, just like Diana, we all miss you.

  • Who ever would have thought that a hymn honoring a Roman Catholic hero, Saint Francis of Assisi, would be performed at such an event by The Church of England! Alleluia! Can reconciliation be far behind?

  • I'm not sure I'd agree that the hymn honours Francis, and I don't think he'd want it to! I think it honours the peace and love that comes from God.

  • True

  • The fact remains, these are the words of a Catholic Saint that are being celebrated in the Church of England. It's a really good thing. We only have 1 God and all of us are his children.

Thank you for providing this beautiful video.

  • @notyobs whether you THINK the song is from a catholic saint or not is absurd! He is the inspiration for such a beautiful song! He deserves all the credit! :) Have a blessed day and may god bless you!

  • @jmoonsuede I'm afraid you missed my point. My point is that this hymn by Francis is not honouring him and he would not have wanted it to. It honours God.

  • @notyobs you're so right.

  • @jmoonsuede I would say all the credit goes to God! Unless you are making an idol of St. Francis of Assisi. For idols are not only material things or even people, but things we think are holy, for example making the Bible and idol when the Bible is actually only directing us to God. I agree with the fact that St. Francis is a Catholic Saint, and I honor him for that ( I really do admire him) but I do not agree with your comment that he was the inspiration for a beautiful song because God (cont)

  • @jmoonsuede inspired him, not himself. for who can inspire man but the creator himself, like how a river does cannot be given credit for quenching thirst, but the source of the river, which is the spring. For the river may be given credit for a while, but in the end without the spring our thirst cannot be quenched. I do agree that St. Francis, like St. Paul when he was in Lystra and held up like gods, would not have wanted him to be lifted up, but only God to be honored. Thank YOU and God bless.

  • @DarkNinjaStudent First of all this was meant as a prayer written by Saint Francis to God and then turned into a song later on. I'm not worshipping him as an idol! Catholics honor saints and he is HOLY wether you think so or not, I am part of the true religion of Christ the Holy Catholic Apostolic Church which was founded by Jesus himself not some man made faudulent heresy, secondly we honor Saints because God said "whoever follows me must leave everything behind" and thats what saints do!

  • @notyobs Amen!

  • @notyobs the hymn doesn't honor Francis, the words were written by him. And yes, it honors the peace and love of God.

  • @JuS546

About reconcilliation...though I would love for it to happen, there isn't a big chance. The CofE has become too liberal. Though, as I understand, the Westminster Abbey is swaying towards a more Broad Church, High Church stance?

  • @JuS546 Why is it such a strech? Every single word of this hymn expresses what all Christians agree on. It's no more surprising to me than to hear protestant hymns such as "A Mighty Fortress" or "How Great Thou Art" in Roman Catholic churches.

  • @JuS546 Amen to reconciliation. Two points, however 1) When St Francis lived the Church of England was still in communion with the Church of Rome, and the English church has never ceased to honor him. 2) The text is not actually by St Francis, but of early 20th century origin.

  • @JuS546 Saint Pius V, Pope Feastday: April 30 He excommunicate Queen Elizabeth I of England in February 1570, an act which also declared her deposed.

  • its one of the most amazind hymns that i have ever heard,it gives me goose pimples all over just listening to it, it realy is so nice. bridget schrompf - 2-dec-07.

  • I don't think I'm the only one who has played this from 2:30 onwards so many times, I've almost lost count. Absolutely stunning descant. Beautiful hymn aswell, brings back the memories like they were yesterday.

  • hehe! Don't worry RJ, you're not the only one. It's a beautiful descant and this is my favourite recording of this song.

  • You are defenitely not the only one:P

    lovely stuff:D:D

    thanks notyobs..

  • Most beautiful service, and most wonderful song..I remember crying my eyes out at this part of the service. I've told my daughter this is the selection I must have at my own funeral... I'm 64 now, and a man, but am preparing for the day to come. John

  • Beautiful hymn ..... very fitting as Diana was a channel of peace for so many ...... the last chorus is so beautiful when the descant comes in .... like angels

  • I has been ten years and I still can't watch this without crying, we all miss Diana.

  • lord make me channel of peace. I have sung this hymn many times in the church services and also during the st.francis day. this hymn was sung many times also at the st.thomas' cathedral in kuching, sarawak, malaysia.

  • One of the highlights of the Funeral for the Princess. I had not heard it before. Beautiful.

  • One of the most lovely hymns ever. I sang that Primary School quite a lot and even at my church still, even when I became a member of my church. Reduces me to tears.

  • maybe it was really specially composed...it's in my school hymnal and we have to sing it at Mass.

i really love the descant. >3<

  • wow..i like the descant, it's like a true promise.

  • It's a fantastic descant isn't it. I'd never heard it before, I wonder if the organist or choirmaster came up with it especially for this service.

  • Well, it's good enough to be one by the choirmaster of Westminster Abbey anyway!!

  • I'm not too sure about that, but I sing in my school choir and we sing this piece every year at our Thanksgiving Service (with the choir singing the descant). Maybe we got the descant from this service?? I'm not too sure, but I mean, my school is in Canada...

  • It's pretty good

  • A Really beautiful Hymn and very emotional. Thankyou for posting

  • Thanks for posting this. The descant makes it especially beautiful.

  • every little girl has dreamed about diana. she's a really princess of fairytale

  • I agree with you. She is the Princess of the Humanity

  • Thanks Don! It was the descsant that really got me too!

  • I can't describe the beauty of this hymn and it's marvellous descant. I'm so glad there are more people in our modern world who appreciate the beauty of choral music.

  • That descant is gorgeous. Thank you for this!

  • It is isn't it!! Glad you like it too.

  • From the funeral, or recorded just for the CD?

  • I have this version on CD.

  • Yes, please do post that hymn....

  • I was wondering I you can also post I Vow To Thee My Country from Diana's funeral.

    thanks in advance!

  • OK, I'll see if I've got it. I probably have.

  • I've done that now.

  • Yes, but I don't think they're mic'd up! There are a couple of pieces just with the choir, but the pictures that go with them are a bit morbid... also I hesitated before posting these as I felt sure that most people might already have them as it was such a mega event.

  • Is the congregation singing too?
