My comment got lost, so apologies if I post this twice: Tori has repeatedly dedicated this song to Matthew Shepard, the victim of a vicious and fatal hate crime.
If you google tori amos, matthew shepard, and merman, you can find lots of articles regarding the song.
That's a good question. I never thought about it, but it was released in 1999 which is around the time she got married I think so maybe so. Isn't it the nicest song ever??
Also, even though I know a lot of songs are probably about Mark, or have things about him -but articles I've read show that a) Jackie's Strength was written because Tori wasn't sure if she'd make it to the church on her wedding day. (Apparently she pictured herself going to a 7-11, and sit on the curb drinking a slurpee.)
And b) in another interview pertaining to Northern Lad, she hinted that the song was about Mark, when asked about this "lad," she said, "I married him."
sorry, but what daes she mean with 'two can play' at the end?
