from a technical standpoint there's a ton of drummers who are a lot better then him, but when it comes down to it, it's all about music!! He is one very musical dude, super creative, and just awesome.
Never occured to me before seeing this - does anyone know if Tony Williams took lessons from Max? Their sound is (or rather, was) so different but something about the way they hold the sticks, strike the drums, and their dynamics seems so much alike.
fleetfox88...you evidently have no clue about that which you speak, you may find Max's performance boring....but Max is truly a master on the drum set. He has influenced practically every modern monster jazz drummer on the planet in one way or another. His influence on the jazz genre is quite vast.... it might behoove you to research his playing further, he is actually an increibly talented musician.....
Thank you! It's so refreshing to hear someone say that. Many drummers I've spoken with in the past always found it amusing when I would try to explain to them that even Ringo Starr had contributed a lot to the rock n roll genre.
I read a comment recently by someone who said that Buddy Rich is better than Papa Jo Jones. I'm sure they learned from one another, and I actually enjoy Papa's playing much more. But I;ll never say that one is better than the other.
Sheesh , just cause its Max Roach everyones having an orgasm. Not musical at all in this video. Showing no real technique. If it was some random kid doing this you'd all be flaming that person. I mean seriously , what was even the point of 1:06? A really really really really crappy single stroke roll on the toms rim, WOW!!! Brilliant!!!! Amazing!!!!!! What a joy to watch! Give me a god dam break.
Not musical at all? I think you need to give it another listen, man. Part of the reason Max Roach is so revered is because with him the music comes first. It's not about showing off speed or chops. If you want to see chops, watch him play bop. The man CAN play stuff that will blow your mind but he doesn't. That's part of the beauty of Max Roach.
Perhaps instead of judging a musician's work based on a backward ass logic that demands every detail to be laid out in front of your simple eyes, you should take to mind what the musician is actually doing. Can you keep the bass on 1 and the hi-hat on 2 while leaving 3 to space and then continuing the remainder of your solo with that ostinato underneath every note? Do your limbs have the independence to even concieve that idea? Shit, can you even count in 3/4?
Max Roach is a beast. I enjoy all types of drumming, it's all very skillful, I wish I could drum like this. I think Grant McFarland of This or the Apocalypse is great too, but he more than likely couldn't do this, and Max more than likely couldn't play "Mauna Kea" either. You can't really compare hard rock and metal drummers like Grant McFarland or Matt Greiner or even Travis Barker to jazz drummers like Roach, Blakey, or big banders like Rich and Krupa. Just different styles, but all awesome.

What a fake - thats no skill - Yes, I know he's intentionally not keeping a beat through some of the solo, but as he's going down the toms - his sticks are all over the place, hitting against each other, hitting rims by accident etc. Not good.
Even I, at 13 been playin drums for 2.5 years can see that this guy is a genius, if u dont have the years to listen closely enough that when hes tapping the rims and his sticks together that they are always in pattern then idk wtf ur doing responding to this.
It's not by accident! He loved experimenting with rims & sticks and stuff. There are like thirty seconds at the beginning of his solo in "The Third Eye" where all he does is tap rims and sides!
Roach,Rich, and Morello were huge influences on Bonham. "The Drum Also Waltzes" was one of Bonham's homage to Roach that he performed with Zepplin earler in their day. That solo eventually led to Moby Dick for Bonham. If you listen to "Dazed and Confused" it follows the same structure.
Neil specifically cited this particular piece as the impetus behind his "waltz section" of his drum solo in "anatomy of a drum solo".
Granted, he was referring to the 50s when Max first created this, but people today are so impressed with speed and flailing that they refuse to realize that everything popular today started with simple building blocks such as this more then 50 years ago.
He's super imposing poly rhythms with the right and left hand over the Waltz accented with the feet.
Max was one of the first 4 Way Independence masters on the modern drum set. To play a freeform solo while holding steady waltz time with the feet is no small feat.
Why does he hit his hardware? Just because.
Why does a saxophone growl, scream, bend and etc. They weren't *made* to do that, but it's expression.

Really unique style, great sense of timing, and innovative. @Thomlistentoslayer Gotta tell ya, When Max died KCR played all of his music. One piece was just two drummers, Max & Buddy. No matter how fast Buddy went, Max played just as fast & with several magnitudes of more difficulty technique. I'd like to know the song, record, etc.
I had the privilege of seeing both live (individually). Buddy's great...a jazz legend. But I saw Max give a 2 hr solo concert at Cooper Union to a packed house & got several standing ovations. Max was...The Real Deal!
I really don't like this chechmate and insipid kick. It's too dryness and choked. He is not to blame (who would dare to blame it?), it must be cause of the recording...
However, he is, and will be for a long time a great, an unbelievable drummer.
I have no right to decide who is the best, and who's not, but I'll will proudly bet on him ;)
amazing...I dig the Max Roach videos here. I just bought my first kit three months ago. Lot of my fave drummers like Peart list Max as their influences. Id never heard/seen him till now on UTube. This vid proves what u can do on a 5pc kit! instead of having 10 Zildjians and a double bass..etc.
Looks like you're the only one that thinks it does. Guess we're all musical idiots or you are. ooops, guess you've been outvoted. Too bad you're tempo deaf and don't know anything about a beat other than the fact of where the 1 beat lays.
Yeah, try it yourself sometime. The "Drum Also Waltzes" This is one of the more legendary drum solos of all of jazz. The clip above is just one small snippet and a demonstration of a larger piece. A lot of people today seem to think that if it isn't the Mike Mangini "Fastest drums on earth" approach then it sucks. Shows how uneducated we have become.
The title is "The Drum Also Waltzes"

Do your limbs have the independence to even concieve that idea? Shit, can you even count in 3/4?

Here, Max's buzz roll sounds like a high school kid. Very poor.

You are absolutely right and you have a good ear and memory. Bonham used this rythmic motif in several songs.

John Bonham used this as inspiration for some of his "Moby Dick" solos, like the one on the Led Zeppelin DVD

That's the first thing I thought of when i heard this. Sounds like the same exact beat almost.

amazing...I dig the Max Roach videos here.
