The saddest thing is I have a friend who says this same sort of thing every time i talk to her. At least this woman is 90 -- my "friend" is just clueless...so clueless she has no idea how she sounds when she tries to show me how "fair" and "enlightened" she is.
As a patriotic German, I often ask myself "why do the Jews always talk about what we did to them instead of what we do for them? They talk about the Holocaust, but since then, we've given them welfare, free medicine, free everything. Heck, we used to give them free summer camps for the whole family!"

Yeah, coloreds - we gave you welfare, preferred back of bus seating, free medicine, free racial profiling, Vanilla Ice, Jim Crow laws, AND we've given Darius Rucker country music star status practically all by our-SELVES.
Anyone thinking "well at least she'll be dead soon" is forgetting that there are legions of crackers waiting patiently to fill her shoes and declare racism "over!" in spite of the mounds of evidence that it is still thriving. Google "Black Power’s Gonna Git You Sucka: Right-Wing Paranoia and the Rhetoric of Modern Racism" for some evidence of this.
The commentator was way cool. He didn't get in a flap, he just cut her off at the knees, showed the world how for the US hasn't come in its race relations and made the woman's racism self-evident. All without raising his voice or saying one nasty or demeaning thing to her. Unlike she did to him!
@Uberlasting They allow everyone a chance to speak - free speech and all that. You know? What she said was ignorant, but it points out that there are a lot of ignorant people out there. Good or bad, we should be able to hear what other Americans are thinking, even if it's downright ignorant.
Why don't old people see what we've done for them? We have given them free medical care to extend their life. They have been given Social Security over and above what they paid into it, and meals on wheels,.
Clearly the caller is unable to see black Americans as anything other than one homogeneous cultural group (and I imagine she sees white Americans the same way), so I think what the woman means by "I'm not a racist" is that she has no anger or malice toward "them." (a bit of resentment due to political and cultural ignorance? ... uh, maybe a little)
The phrase "colored man" is not inherently racist. It's old-fashioned and out-of-touch... but what do you expect? She's 90 year old.

@jpence80 I don't think it was just the use of, 'colored man' that was the racist part but the generalization that they (the whole group) do nothing but gripe about being enslaved, instead of thanking government for all the things they do for them. Seems pretty arrogant.
@Rawrlor Don't forget the free drinks of water from fire hoses, german shepard bites, rope burns on the neck., nightstick beatings, and letting those "coloreds" use the service entrance. Bet they loved that. (This was sarcasm by the way).
Whenever someone says "I'm not a racist" about 90 percent of the time it is followed or preceded by something incredibly racist IMO.
Poor oppressed white people. Going around making LeBron James a millionaire, Obama President and other black people rich and famous ... and there's just no appreciation there. It's not like, you know, they earned it or anything. Where's the love? Isn't it time you guys forgot about slavery and start thanking us for Oprah Winfrey?
@totlyepic It's for every comment. I have had death threats for posting the videos I upload, I have had people say vicious, violent and hateful things.... so that's why the comments have to be approved.
@totlyepic Look, this is my channel - and I see so much vitriol and ignorant behavior all over the internet - if people want to be cruel, or vicious, or what-the-hell-ever, they have plenty of places they can go and do just that. I would prefer to keep this channel slightly less vicious. My channel, my choice. And if anyone on either side of the political aisle wants to come here to call names, or hurl threats - they won't get any traction with me. That's just how it is.
@totlyepic I didn't say it was... but I have been attacked a lot lately, so I'm just putting it out there - for anyone who reads it. Sorry if it came across kind of harsh. Not intended that way, and not specific to you. It's been a long week, and after some of the crap I read every day here... bleah. Anyway, sorry about that, and take care.
@xvidzzz She is 90 years old. She lived when schools, restaurants, and even drinking fountains were segregated. She lived during Jim Crow, and probably when Blacks couldn't vote. She lived when Black soldiers returning from WW2 couldn't take advantage of the GI bill for college education or housing. She lived when Blacks were expected to step off the sidewalk and look down when white women passed. She still miss those days, too.
Love hearing the racists say they aren't racists. If you think all black people(or all of any people) are all the same then you are a bigot and there is no way to get around it. She should be honest about her bigotry.
Seriously these C-Span call takers are some of the nicest people in the world. The shit they have to put up with from crazy callers and still remain composure in order to keep it objective.
It is call "denial". In the same way they like to accuse President Obama of being a racist because they think that in doing that no one will see the forest for the trees.
He's such a badass - I feel like this isn't the first time I've seen him handle something so admirably. He probably even did more to convince her that it's not about race by not showing emotion (though he had every right to).
I work in a hotel in Ireland and we had an elderly lady from USA like this who kept passing comments about 'blackies' and mexicans when she was checking in, being the scourge of society. Other guests around could hear her and were shocked. I advised her that her comments were unacceptable. She said 'Oh, do the Irish like colored folk' I said 'No madam, it's just that most of us know what the word racism means'. I then asked her to go to a different hotel.
@paulydublinboy Cheers, man, I'm glad you did that. I hope she went somewhere else. I can't imagine HOW she thought it was okay to say things like that! For what it's worth, I apologize for that disgusting specimen from my country.
He...uh...needs to cut her off super fast, before she has time to build up speed. As soon as she said, "I have a question for the colored man" I would have been, "NEXT!" He was a lot nicer than I would have been. Oi.
I'm not shock by this old lady because that's how she was raised and the mentality that southern folk have is pathetic you if I was broke then I will always be broke type of spirit
My reply: "Listen mam....when I was born I was BLACK, " "When I grew up I was BLACK, " "When I'm sick I'm BLACK, " "When I go in the sun I'm BLACK, " "When I'm cold I'm BLACK, " "When I die I'll be BLACK." "But you ma'am." "When you're born you're pink, " "When you grow up you're white ," "When you're sick, you're green, " "When you go in the sun you turn red, " "When you're cold you turn blue, " "And when you die you turn purple. "And you have the nerve to call me colored?"
Wow! Talk about a time warp! Still, she was 90 yrs old! (and maybe she'd been in a cave for the last 60 of those) The commentator was certainly more calm than I would have been. I think my jaw would have dropped hearing this!
@estevancarlos poor exuse, my great grandma was 96 years old before she was murdered and she spent every week in college classes learning until her life was cut short. people decide to stop learning because they think its ok.
OMFG @ "The colored man," "colored people..." My jaw dropped. :O
"...instead of saying what we did to them, why don't they say what we did for them? They talk about the slavery, but, since then, they have given welfare, free medicine, free everything." What racist bullshit! It's sad that some people actually think this way. Guess what, you ignorant old bigot? The majority of welfare recipients are white. Ha!
This caller's ignorant comments are reminiscent of Pat Buchanan's "A Brief for Whitey" blog in 2008 (a response to Barack Obama's speech on race) in which he expressed similar thoughts. Are we really surprised by such ignorance? I'm not.
Colored man?? Just exactly what are caucasians? We too have melanin in our fucking skin just not enough to look brown without a huge does of UV radiation when we temporarily turn into a ...colored man. This woman couldn't learn that in 90 years? Not even albinos are white.
@suseJelbatalfnI I have no idea why that was flagged as "spam" - it's factual, for one... and I have seen some pretty nasty stuff posted on YouTube. Makes me wonder who is doing the spam flagging... heck, I've gotten death threats because I post Keith Olbermann videos (and he's gotten them too). Tough, folks - if the truth hurts, deal with it. :)
She sounds like a sweet lady, kindly but racist. I bet she goes to Walmart and ask a white customer service representative to please direct her to where the birthday cards for negros are at.
@HalEBurton you are absolutely correct! I've confronted some tweeters who have posted very offensive stuff. They either call me vile names and block me or say "I'm not a racist"
@ffirb Yeah, lots of people who "CLAIM" not to be racists don't really know the definition, don't know what they are saying is offensive, and haven't suffered a day in their lives without what they need to live comfortably. They resent paying taxes, because it keeps them from being even richer than they are, and they believe mistakenly that the lion's share of their taxes go to support those who are poor. They believe the Republican and Fox News lies, hook, line and sinker.
@rodzmen1 Not necessarily. Many younger people are learning racism at the feet of the elders. It will be a long time before we can cleanse ourselves of this kind of fear and ignorance.
@MiniRtist (Regarding the youth and racism comment, since YouTube's comment system is horrible and you can't actually track replies): While that's true, in my experience, it seems to be that it's a matter of racists from one generation teaching bad habits to their children, but there being a handful that don't follow their parents (or follow them lightly) with each generation. If this is accurate, it would be thinning, assuming there aren't new-generation racists popping up at a larger rate.
Stewie: I...just hope you're making the best of what we gave you here.
Black Guy: I would say that, given the events that preceded it, the couple hundred years or so, maybe we're about even.
Stewie: Yeah, no, no, we gave more.

Seriously these C-Span call takers are some of the nicest people in the world. The shit they have to put up with from crazy callers and still remain composure in order to keep it objective.

"I'm... I'm... I'm not a racist". Why is that people use this after saying racist thing?
WayneWexford 1 year ago
@WayneWexford

Ha!
"I'm not a racist." LMFAO! Umm...
Wow. ಠ_ಠ
CitizenGatsby 1 year ago
This caller's ignorant comments are reminiscent of Pat Buchanan's "A Brief for Whitey" blog in 2008 (a response to Barack Obama's speech on race) in which he expressed similar thoughts. Are we really surprised by such ignorance? I'm not.
BrotherJR76 1 year ago
Colored man?? Just exactly what are caucasians? We too have melanin in our fucking skin just not enough to look brown without a huge does of UV radiation when we temporarily turn into a ...colored man. This woman couldn't learn that in 90 years? Not even albinos are white.

Reminds of me the crazy lady at the McCain "town hall" who used her mic time to insist that Barack Obama was an Arab.
("Pending approval" for what, YouTube? The "A-word"? Whatever. It's what she said, it went out all over the TV channels unedited...)
suseJelbatalfnI 1 year ago
@suseJelbatalfnI I have no idea why that was flagged as "spam" - it's factual, for one... and I have seen some pretty nasty stuff posted on YouTube. Makes me wonder who is doing the spam flagging... heck, I've gotten death threats because I post Keith Olbermann videos (and he's gotten them too). Tough, folks - if the truth hurts, deal with it. :)

ffirb 1 year ago
@ffirb Yeah, lots of people who "CLAIM" not to be racists don't really know the definition, don't know what they are saying is offensive, and haven't suffered a day in their lives without what they need to live comfortably. They resent paying taxes, because it keeps them from being even richer than they are, and they believe mistakenly that the lion's share of their taxes go to support those who are poor. They believe the Republican and Fox News lies, hook, line and sinker.

Always the old people. Racism I hope is thinning out with each generation. The next generation will be less ignorant than the last we can only hope.
rodzmen1 1 year ago
@rodzmen1 Not necessarily. Many younger people are learning racism at the feet of the elders. It will be a long time before we can cleanse ourselves of this kind of fear and ignorance.
MiniRtist 1 year ago
@MiniRtist yep
id give it about 70-100 more years before its phased out
but LMAO @ the end "im im not a racist"
Q2IN2Y 1 year ago
@MiniRtist (Regarding the youth and racism comment, since YouTube's comment system is horrible and you can't actually track replies): While that's true, in my experience, it seems to be that it's a matter of racists from one generation teaching bad habits to their children, but there being a handful that don't follow their parents (or follow them lightly) with each generation. If this is accurate, it would be thinning, assuming there aren't new-generation racists popping up at a larger rate.
