I just was in Andre Chenier at the lake-stage Lake of Constance in Bregenz. I didn't know that this aria belongs to this opera, but I knew it just in time when she began to sing. It was a great experience. Great aria beautiful

She was, as Tito Gobbi once said, a legend by 25 based on what she was doing vocally and quickly became immortal. He told her once "You'll be the only one they talk about 100 years from now." Isn't it the truth?

The commentary appears to have been written by a grade school child who never learned how to write or spell correctly. Maria Callas had a rock solid bel canto education. She attended the two finest schools of opera in all of Greece; her technique was perfect, her voice different. What she lacked was a full understanding of how to care for her instrument. @Elisabetta611 Yes, I have the Verona issue and several other cds of the live performance at La Scala, but there has been some doctoring of the tapes. My MRF vinyl records are quite different, no distortion of any sort. I still think someone has 'doctored' the recording. If you have Jellinek's book, "Callas, Portrait of a Prima Donna" you will see why.
@MariaCallasLegend I don't have the skills I'm afraid to upload, it means getting the vinyl transferred to a cd and where I live that's almost impossible. On the vinyls, and I have heard two different vinyl editions the sound remains the same, its clearly a live recording, recorded all at one level. EMI has done some nob-twiddling and brought Callas' voice 'up' louder, and then dubbed applause in for the end of the aria. To me, that is dishonest, a live document should stay 'live.'

Over 20 years working and living opera and from 1949 to1959, we can listen with what kind of "standart". Suddenly she decided to be happy outside a theatre (where she had made others happy), when her voice had started to decay. Over 20 years working and living opera and from 1949 to1959, we can listen with what kind of "standart". Suddenly she decided to be happy outside a theatre (where she had made others happy), when her voice had started to decay. It was a pity Onassis was just a jerk, but she definitely deserved a chance to fall in love and be sexually happy. She had done enough!

Glorious and educated use of the voice to give weight to the word and express emotion whilst maintaining line and phrasing. I would admit that it's not the most beautiful instrument but what she did with it remains amazing and an education in how to deliver opera that the whole world has taken note of.

@Speedoz, in all the things u said i agree but: I have herd Dessay and Larmore in Flower Duet, and they almost sounded the same, im saying this example, to say that Maria Callas whatever she will sing, I know it is Maria Callas, her voice it is not ungly, either delicate like the two above, in which they sound like angels, but Callas voice is special, and for me is unique color and has beauty. :)

My grandmother (who was a far superior soprano to scream-the-high-notes-callas) and her colleagues all had nothing good to say about Callas! In fact, read any respectable critic of the time and tell me how much they love callas!
