I had one of these also in brown, but it did not have the carving. I wish I still had it.

I also had a 1970 Jetglo Rickenbacker 325. Unfortunately, the company I worked for was bought out and they closed the place. I had a choice on keeping the guitars, or feeding my family. God, I miss those guitars.

This guitar is crap compared to a Gibson. It just has cheap pickups, and the stock tuners aren't Grover, they're just made by Guild.

@The1970sInfatuate What! The pick up are every bit as good as a Gibson and the tuners are just the same as any top guitar. You must have tried a completely different guitar. I have a Guild S300A and I've played Gibsons as well - very similar guitars. Couldn't say one was better - they are just different.

@The1970sInfatuate - you clearly don't know what you are talking about. Vintage HB-1 Guild humbuckers are second to none and this guitar DID come stock with Grover tuners. S-100 is the SG killer. This thing would eat an SG alive then shit it out and the SG would still be inferior, although after being shit out it would have better tone.

@BLacKCatB0ne I have one, and the tuners are made by GUILD!  The pickups are crap because they have two height adjustment screws on one side, and one on the other side. Normal PAF's or any humbucker would just have one height adjustment screw on each side.

@BLacKCatB0ne I have the same S-100 CARVED with the acorn's that was originally my Grandpa's. The original tuners say guild on the back, NOT Grover. I don't know what year mine is, but it's possible that certain years or editions were made with different tuners, or else the original owner(s) of your Guild(s) swapped out the stock tuners for Grovers.

i used to have one of those, only someone pulled the pickguard, sanded it down and filled in the carving and screw holes and painted it white. took me a while to figure out what it was...actually until i cracked the neck, because they sanded it down almost to the truss rod close to the nut. guitar sounded awesome until the day it died, i'd LOVE to have another one.

@GregsGuitars So why did guild stop making this guitar if it's so superior to the gibson sg? I've heard that it's in demand and that guild began producing more in the mid-90's with the popularity of soundgarden and that kim thayil used it almost exclusively. Judging by most of the comments, this guitar is in demand and very hard to find.

i really want 1 xD it sucks that fender bought the Guild company which is why they stopped making electric guitars... My dad has an early 70's Guild s100 model. the only thing he chaned was the bridge and pickguard. it now has a gibson bridge and black pickguard.

The Guild S-100 Polara & Yamaha SBG 2000 are both superior guitars to the Gibson SG. But guess which instrument most of the sheep want to buy? The SG.

Superior is in the ear of the listener. I play a Les Paul because the sound I have in my head when I want to play is 99% of the time a Gibson Les Paul, not an Epi, not a Les Paul copy. Believe me, I have tried other Les Paul style instruments. Their sound is different, not better. It's the same with those G&Ls you're talking about in the other comment. Do you really think musicians with the experience and development that Jeff and Eric have would choose a guitar because someone paid them?

Yes, I do believe players like Clapton & Beck would play a certain guitar because they are paid to. The manufacturers are willing to pay them big $ because they know that the 'sheeple' will then want that guitar, too. Too many guitarists listen with their eyes & not their ears. A Guild Bluesbird & Guild Polara are superior guitars to their Gibson counterparts but because they're not slung over Jimmy Page & Angus Young in concert & print - the demand is not there.

You gotta remember that guys like Clapton play a Fender because they are paid a lot of money. A G&L Legacy is a superior "strat" in every way to a Fender but you won't see Clapton or Jeff Beck playing one because G&L can't afford to pay them what they'd want. Fellas, any conversation about the S100 and Gibson SG can only be about the shape and anything else aint even close. Any guitar player worth his salt will tell you that the Guild S100 is a masterpiece and far superior than the Gibson SG. If Clapton or Angus or even Iommi played them people would be praising them highly but here is one opportunity to hear something better than the rest. GUILDS are BETTER!

@BL80488 gibsons anymore are CNC, guilds used to be really good guitars for the buck but fender bought them out and killed them off more or less, if you want a real SG without the sticker shock look into ESP Edwards in Japan, lacquer finish with seymour duncan pickups, the real one not the designed crap for $800

@rallygsc I have a real SG. a 2010 SG standard. It blew an early 90s s100 away. Im kind of glad fender killed off guild before they died off. It was inevitable, Plus Fender had a much more valuable to run, Gretsch.

@BL80488 You want me to tell you about a friend's SG - the one that the neck came off around the 22nd fret where the pick up cavity weakens the neck joint. No problems like that with the S300 I have.

Check into Agile guitars. Look at the Valkyries, similar the the Guild S-100 without the having to pay thousands of dollars for a rare guitar. I think the Valkries run under $300 right now. Great guitars, I own one. The DeArmonds S-73s are good, too.

How do the Guilds compare to the Gibson SG?

I like SG's but i would prefer the less pronounced horns more like the ones on your Guild.

Is that extra switch for a coil tap/split?

The Guild sounds great! Like an old SG, more "dry". The switch is original and can activate the out of phase sound when both pickups running
