His role in "The bridge on the river Kwai" is one of the best in history and he is one of the best actors in history. And he would be that big even if he didn't play Obi-Wan. He hated that role and he had a reason.
Alec Guinness, as star wars fans know, HATED the film so much, he first turned his role down, but George Lucas kept bugging him. His character's disappearing death was supposed to show his dislike for being in it (or someting else to explain it). Guinness threw out massive star wars fan mail, WITHOUT opening it.
We can all pick a favorite role, but when Guiness did it, the role became "his". To those of us who watched "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and "Smiley's People", he will always be the expression of the ambiguity of intelligence work.
fucking obi-wan kenobi... always that stupid fairy tale character they mention... always. the man hated the very mention of it, and yet people refuse to forget it... bloody aggravating.
@hcvang I have found an article of him very honored to have started such a fanbase for the character. He started Star Wars. Without him, Obi Wan would not be a name known to us. He fit the role perfectly. If you compare him to young Obi-Wan, they look a bit similar. This added to the greatness. I know he came before Ewan M, but both will forever be known for this. I do agree though. He is only given credit for Star Wars. He should be given credit for so much more.
@JustinPierce1226 Sorry, George Lucas started Star Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec Guinness are not the end all and be all of that franchise, you can remove Obi-Wan and replace him with any other type of role model for Luke, and you could have the same result.
Remembering Guinness or McGregor for their kids films alone is a grave insult to their craft, ability and in Guinness' case their legacy.
@hcvang Quote from George: " Alec Guinness was my favored acter for the role of Obi-Wan. He was not cheesy, and he had a mysteriousness about him that caught my eye for an almost father figure for Luke. Without Obi-Wan, my whole story would have fallen apart, and the sequels would not have ever taken place. Alec Guinness made that role, and nobody could have played the part if he didn't. Thank Alec for Obi-Wan." I know George, and I know alot of Star Wars. More than any fan could know
@hcvang And remember, I acknowledge their roles as other characters. They fit all their roles they have done perfectly. Both are great actors outside of, not only a kids movie, but a movie series that even led us to creating technology from it. Both men were proud of their roles. Talking to George yesterday, he said how appreciative Alec and Ewan were when playing the roles. Alec was shying from the spot for a bit, but after its major success, he was proud to be part of it. Both actors are great
@hcvang Also: They were not intended as kids movies. I know 84 year olds who watched Star Wars and enjoyed it. The movies were created for action and adventure for all ages and, since I work for LucasArts part time, they turned the film franchise into something that will never go away. Seeing as George is infact planning something theater wise for the franchise. But on the topic: I for one love Alec and Eawn more than just Star Wars roles. both men are superiorly talented, and should be noticed.
He really was bigger than Star Wars, and that is the reason why he was able to give us Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. In his case the actor did not suit the character, but the character had to suit him, for he created Obi-Wan. We will always be in your debt sir Alec Guinness and your memory will live on forever in our hearts. The Force will be with you, always... R.I.P.
@xtrmsprts To be completely honest, I liked all the Star Wars films. I made the comment because Guinness hated the films and the "mumbo-jumbo lines". He couldn't probably get through ten minutes of the Phantom Menace.
I think it was the Phantom Menace that killed him
