The first thing any gangbanger will learn, in only a few minutes, will be how to choke.
Ground fighting and punching are becoming popular all over the world because of television, UFC and Joyce Gracie, and U tube.
It makes for a very cocky society as average size sissies learn they're superman. And when self defense becomes too common then we go back to where we started (where only the young and the strong are the toughest, most formidable foes.)
Soon enough, because of all the advertising and publicity, every thug (every big thug) and too many gang-bangers will know all the skills these self defense factories are teaching to peaceful, honest and law-abiding citizens. Then these skills will be worthless. And the only thing that could protect people will be weapons.
spare time, dedication and passion? I say that i don't think alot would because I do know quite a few shady characters and they all started out doing these things but they all give up as soon as they have to exhibit any thing close to hard work.
It is amazing how much more criminals learn about being better criminals while they're in jail. My friend went in for a DUI and his cellmates taught him how to cook meth LOL.
I'm saying, in jail, criminals have LOTS of free time, and our systems really don't have much to help them become productive.. If learning these techniques will help them further whatever their motives may be, then they will. Just because they're criminals does not mean they're lazy or anything <_<
Good point but there aren't exactly a plethora of fight trainers in prison. Most people would have to go to the trouble of paying for training and spending the years whilst outside of prison learning all this business.
Besides, a more useful skill to learn in Jail is how to make a shiv. You can do more damage with this implement which takes less than half an hour to make than 10 years of training.

This is why gun possession is so important.

I think the amount of time it takes to learn these skills would be enough to deter most criminal types.
