@Ultra437...Sorry, but you are dead wrong. The House of the Rising Sun was written about the Louisiana State Prison...now a 'whore house!" In the old penitentiary, every room faced the east, making sure the inmates were awake with the rising sun to go perform indentured service on the chain gangs. It was a very old song when Eric Burden and the Animals recorded it in the early 1960's...and has nothing whatsoever to do with a 'whore house!'

That's what my dad (who grew up on this song) told me and what every website agrees. I looked and haven't found anything about a prison.

@japinvt Randy Murray played lead on this. This is off the "Trial by Fire" cd. Randy Murray was with the band from 1991-2005. Amazingly that is the longest stint of anyone in the band. This is some very good guitar work!! I agree with you.

Fred Turner has been in every BTO lineup since their founding (making his run 1973-present), and the only lineup which doesn't feature drummer Robbie Bachman is the most recent, making his run 1973-2005. It wouldn't be Bachman-Turner Overdrive without (at least one) Bachman and Turner.

The Animals is the definitive one & the best IMO. But this is good too. So is Frijid Pink's. But there are a lotta good versions, including folk. Try Odetta & Joan Baez. And believe it or not, all these disparate artists did their own good versions: Gerry & the Pacemakers, Marianne Faithful, Henry Mancini, Bob Dylan, Miriam Makeba, Pete Seeger, Santa Esmeralda and Alan Price, an original Animal who did the great keyboard work on the orignal and does his own very different jazzy version.

FINALLY it's on YOUTUBE, Here's the legend behind this version: . Randy was paid by a "biker club" to do this BIG, MASSIVE party! Anyway, he gets this request to do a "Cover" of "House of the Rising Sun" and Randy says "We Don't Do No Stinkin' Covers, Man, We only do our own stuff!" But before Randy left the party he indeed did the cover, It was such a hit, he was immediately inducted into their "Club"! And he's played it at his live shows ever since!
