B5 was an awesome series, I think it had a few seasons left in it, I dont think there was a need for a spin off series (Crusade), they could have still have the events of call to arms, and dealt with it on B5 and have the Excalibur based at Babylon 5, for me Crusade felt to much like a star trek spin off rather than a B5 one.
One thing I'm surprise hasn't been mentioned here is the fact WHY the Narn were so frantic as the jump points collapsed. It's not just "getting blown up". IIRC, the tale is told that, if your ship is destroyed at the moment of hyperspace transition, you spend eternity frozen in that moment of death - unable to move, unable to escape, forever DYING.
The shadows should have let one ship escape. If there goal was to encourage war among the Younger Races, what better way to spread fear. A display of there power. Destroy all the Narn ships, save on to tell the nightmarish tail of the ships that scream in your mind. Tails of the Shadows.
What you say is true, but it would also reveal the alliance between the Centauri and the Shadows. Around that time the Shadows were still preparing themselves and building up their main fleet . Being revealed around that time would have been a disadvantage for them in the long run.
In the previous war the Shadows were driven back/defeated because they revealed themselves too soon. IMHO, they didn't want to make the same mistake again.
An actual STARGATE/PORTAL-THING was captured on film. The footage can be found within the short-film entitled "SUDDEN PORTHOLE", which is currently parked at the PROJECT CAMELOT YouTube page (it's under the George Noory video).
I'm not selling anything...I'm just trying to spread the word about the unseen-dimensions we find ourselves embedded in.

No series matched it for ongoing storyline, numerous battles, and sheer size of the struggle...all other shows at the time and later imitated it. All you have to do is watch what happened to DS9 when Bab5 was on, it went from Trek-Vanilla to a huge war and epic battle storyline. Stargate Sg1 did it too. Someone with some vision needs to buy the rites and bring it back, new cast new story same epic feel. Crusade, Rangers etc were examples of how NOT to bring it back.

@krashly71 Before Rick Berman took over from Roddenberry, Star Trek was NOT a Bab5 copy. I appreciate and respect opinions, but bias tears it for me. Also, "Trek-Vanilla" is not an accurate description of DS9: that "vanilla" was hated by a large number of Trek fans as well. More like: Trek deep-fried in bleach, with added tech ignorant combat.
wikipedia search: Star_Trek_3 <--- This is one of Star Trek's below-the-usual-average films.
@Idazmi7 I do not totally disagree, but clearly DS9 changed to boost the action and ongoing storyline which before B5 was lacking. Next Generation never had a solid ongoing storyline for more than a couple episodes. I agree about the DS9 ignorant combat...where else can a Miranda bob and weave like an F-14. As much as I dislike the BSG redux storyline the slow and ponderous movement of capital ships always struck me as appropriate, like old naval ships rather than speedboats.
@krashly71 True. Just FYI, Star Trek ships have always been able to move like that using short warp-speed bursts, like the Constitution Class, and they usually move rather quickly. (The Galaxy is just sluggish). The lack of shields, (at all) short distance torpedo strafing, wimpy torpedoes, and lack of planetary siege is what got me. After seeing and hearing info from the Original Series, I would have preferred the TOS *dialague* to the DS9 stuff. As for Galactica, you're totally right. ^-^
@krashly71 Except B5 had tech ignorant combat too. The White Star is 450 meters long, much bigger than the Miranda, and it bobs and weaves all the time. They had Shadow vessels move like acrobats too and they're supposed to be twice as big as the Galaxy class.
The rule of cool always overrides realism and scientific accuracy. Having ships fire at each other from 500 miles apart doesn't look as good as WWII style aerial dogfights.
@0pteryx I'm not a B5 expert, but while watching this I thought it might be William Morgan Sheppard, and his IMBd page does say he's been in the series.
Out of all the battle ships you see in Babylon 5, my favorite has always been the Narn battle cruisers, they just look so much better than anyone else's.
This scene packs so much emotion...no matter how many Narn ships there are, 5 Shadow fighters are all it takes to destroy their entire fleet, killing hundreds....
Btw, in the future, please don't put leave those chat bubbles in the centre of the screen; it's kind of annoying :)
@wuebboltc : There were only four capital ships. The number of Shadow vessels which appeared in the first and second seasons was increased sequentially (and deliberately) to show their growing strength. One appears in "Signs and Portents" to destroy the Raider mothership; two Shadow vessels destroy the base at Quadrant 37; three destroy the base in Quadrant 14, and four take out the bulk of the Narn fleet in this battle. I thought it was a nice, subtle touch done by JMS.
@Zero1RLV Actually Narns are descended from marsupial type animals, and so it's not entirely clear how their physiology works. All I remember is they're pouch reared.
@williamskidfears though morgan did play a kilingon in undiscovered country , and played iria graves in STNG (man that transferred his mind into data ) hes done alot of tv and movies from voice acting to other secondary characters . he played capt whitwicki in Transformers and played a vulcan in JJ abrams version of star trek. so he does get around .lol
@detpackman Agreed. Morgan's an excellent voiceover and character actor, one of many unsung heros in the entertainment biz.
J.G. Hertzler is also an excellent character actor, not just as Martok(my fave DS9 character hands down) but as a Kyptonian in Lois and Clark and a plethora of other roles.
And, he's a Georgia boy, which is even better. :-D
I like how in the series they intercut this battle and Gakar praying, each time getting more and more frantic until the ships are destroyed, and he acts like he knows they are dead.
That, and despite the fact the Narn cruisers are no match for them, they still give a good counting of themselves.
@PezunaProducciones And the Narn? How about Centuari? Hell, tell me one for the Minbari! And about a dozen more races that makes up the alliance that ultimately wins the shadow war?
Furthermore, the plots of B5 and SC are so different I find it hard to find any similarities at all, except both are science fiction. For one thing, when did Jim Raynor ever commanded a space station dedicated for universal peace? And have I missed an episode where Delenn becomes the Queen of Blades?
@Zero1RLV Who gives a fuck about video games when this is even more captivating? Surely that point was already proved, with the amount of views this video has gotten, plus you are even watching it.
@Matticus333 Dude, it was nothing like that - the Obsidian Order and Tal-Shiar actually had a chance if they hadn't been betrayed by infiltrators. These guys were boned the moment they came out of hyperspace.
@Zero1RLV what do you want us to do? put f*cking lasers and missile launchers on the ISS? first we gotta figure a way to getinto space without wasting the amount of resources we are currently doing.
i've seen "Enter your text here" take shadow ship fire and firing at shadow ships and then opening up a jump point and firing from a shadow ship. That must be one of the first ones =)))
Just hope if they ever do find a buried Shadow vessel on Mars, no one will be stupid enough to try to touch it. Remember, in the story Dr Kirkish provided, a worker cleaning the dust from it, brushed against it with his hand.......and died instantly
The moment those main beam weapons start slicing through the Narn cruisers like hot butter was one of those "Holy...shit..." moments. That was an obscene display of fire power by the Shadows that took out the entire Narn fleet in minutes. After that when a Shadow Battlecrab showed up you always got that sinking feeling. Just a shame they powered them down somewhat.
@ScreamingTc : It's not so much that they were powered down. The Narn were completely defenseless against the Shadows at this point. It was only later learned that telepaths interfered with the battlecrabs, how much firepower it took to kill them, and that only by working together did they stand a chance. And even battles the alliance "won" came at a high price (for every Shadow ship killed, two of their ships were lost). Had the war dragged on, the Shadows could have won through attrition alone
@cannonski If NASA discovered a 500m2 spider-like object buried under the soil on Mars, I would shit myself. Imagine how god damn creepy it would be to see the first satellite photos. The very idea gives me the creeps. Despite it being awesome discovering an alien race, I'd bet a war-like race would be more likely to master space travel than a peaceful race, too.
Would have been better if that shadow ship was destroyed rather than just slightly damaged. Always felt as though the shadow ships were 'powered down' slightly after this episode.
@tehbogieman Truth. There were a few in storyline reasons to do so though. One was the use by the alliance of telepaths. In effect, these degraded shadow vessel performance considerably. Even then in large alliance battle 'we lost two of our ships to their one.' and that wasn't counting the crippled/heavily damadged alliance vessels. Which was most the surviving fleet. It's the Vorlons, I think, that really kept showing the shadows up. We never really saw shadows kill them.
@tehbogieman Also Sheridan's bombing of the Shadow capital on Za'Ha'Dum. I think this basically killed off the leadership/admiralty or whatever shadows used equivelantly. Along with probably a sizable fleet parked there. Likely why the Vorlons started kicking their arses, though the show really shoulda clarified on that point.
@Justicar333 But they didn't openly engage each other. They targeted allied worlds only. It wasn't until Coriana VI that they started fighting each other. I think the Vorlons started attacking because the rules of engagement had been thrown out the window. I think the whole "No attacking each others Homeworlds" rule extended to their allies as well. Once Sheridan nuked Z'Ha'Dum all bets were off but neither side had the power or ships to go after the others homeworld.
@Fbueller129 Over all no, and that made it more confusing. Clearly, they were hitting worlds that each other had ships on. Such as Centair Prime that was about to get it. We did see one full battle between Shadows and Vorlons though. When Shieridan convinced Kosh to intervene, so he could rally support to the alliance. A Vorlon fleet suprised, then severaly spanked, a Shadow fleet. Leading to Kosh's death sadly, when the shadows retaliated by murdering him. :(
