I think I disagree. It isn't that having all the colors in the palette makes you uncreative, having all the tools you want forces you to have vision and direction, because nothing is there to dictate your style. Self-imposed limitation means creating more of a template for yourself to work within, which sounds less creative to me, not more.
Don't jump on me and be like "WELL Nickleback's got all that money and studio time, and just look." Yea, so does Radiohead, and they're awesome.
Look at it this way; With a limited palette you will have to think of ways to do certain things, which are not there in that palette. This 'forces' you to make workarounds, to get certain things done the way you want them. This 'workaround' is probalbly different from the regular way to do it, so instead of being lazy and do it the way everyone does, you are forced to think about it and do it differently. In that way, it is a more creative approach.
i see his point on limiting.he even used the example not to say to yourself "you have all the colors in the palette.." a lot of (visual) artists due exercises where they limit the amount of color they use to force themselves to use it more effectively and in different new ways, ideas.
Jack White is just... man. This guy has a very brilliant and interesting view on life. The way he operates on a day to day basis like that is just fascinating. I have total respect for Jack. I wish I could just sit down with him on his porch one day and just discuss life in general. I'm sure it'd be a very enlightening conversation.
What I think he meant was that when you "force yourself to work" you also limit yourself and when you limit yourself you are more capable to create new things. Its not that he completely means run yourself ragged even though he does himself, he means to limit your resources that divert you from your creative process so you can create awesome songs .
@molly1564 they're actually in a funeral home there. ......jk their tech crew usually dresses real sharp, they did for blackpool lights, so thatd be my guess as to who's snoozin
I have watched this video countless times because literally everything that this man says here is the absolute truth and is so applicable to life. If someone was to ask me what words have inspired me the most in my life I would answer with these words from Jack.
love this documentary. just wish jw hadn't forgotten he is indeed mortal, like the rest of us. but luv this doc nonetheless, will always be a WS fan!!
@rougedove can you explain how he has forgotten he's mortal? i feel that he's one of the only people that's become ridiculously famous but hasn't lost perspective. he may be a little cocky, but he deserves to be.
He is brilliant.

This man needs to take a year and write all of his thoughts down in a book. I would live by them.
