The original Kinks versions are the best, liten to the live Dve Davies album for two stunning versions of the songs, Van Halens version is great, but this version of You Really Got Me with its creator and the mighty Metallica is far superior to Van Halens, who are now just a band who haven't got it anymore and have yet to come up with anything better than their debut over 30 years ago.

But that doesn't mean that Metallica isn't a very successful band. I think they are absolutly amazing. Metallica should cover heavier stuff, not 60's or 70's stuff because they make a great song too heavy.

I think that Van Halen do it better than Metallica - who don't play it well at all. I haven't been much into Metallica since 1990 - where did the amazing grooves of the 'Justice' and 'Garage Days' go? I also prefer VH over The Kinks, but that's probably only due to my (bad) taste.

What a great combo this is. Ray Davies and Hetfield are both real showmen and musically they go together really well too, as this video proves. Breathing new life into some classic British tunes from four and a half decades ago. Amazing stuff.
Can you believe thess songs are 46 years old and still stand up as they do? I remember folding newspapers at 3am with the other paperboys when "You Really Got Me" premiered on Chicago's WLS and all 20 of us stopped rubber-banding the Indianapolis Star to hear every second of a song that seemed alien and superior to what all the other "R & R bands" were doing. This WAS Rock 'n Roll and suddenly every other band became am anemic "pop band" , especially after All Day and All of The Night. Checkmate
@jneglia Ray always teased the crowd usually before "Lola" by strumming the first chord and then saying "you're still not ready for it" which only made the crowd more playful. Ray can read an audience better than any performer I've ever seen and no matter how many times he says "you're still not ready for it", those "oldies" like me still get a chuckle out of it as I've heard that statement at least 50 times over and we still willingly play along. He's a unique blend of British entertainers.

HBO is an absolute DISGRACE! I just finished watching the HBO concert, and they only showed Ray performing All Day And All Of The Night and did not show You Really Got Me. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL not to mention DISRESPECTFUL in my opinion.

@jneglia Ray always teased the crowd usually before "Lola" by strumming the first chord and then saying "you're still not ready for it" which only made the crowd more playful. Ray can read an audience better than any performer I've ever seen and no matter how many times he says "you're still not ready for it", those "oldies" like me still get a chuckle out of it as I've heard that statement at least 50 times over and we still willingly play along. He's a unique blend of British entertainers.

@jneglia He says "still not ready for it", as in the crowd didn't respond vigoursly enough, so they aren't ready for the song... it's a joke, a tease... he has thrown that in regularly over the years, you can hear it on One For The Road too for instance

Eddie Van Halen is a joke next to Ray Davies. Anyone that says otherwise obviously hasn't got a musical bone in their body. I'd love to see Van Halen write a song as beautiful as waterloo sunset. It just wouldn't happen

I thought Jame's remarks about Ray and the Kinks were kind of condescending. As much as I like Metallica, the Kinks were the best band to ever grace this planet. I thought he could've been a little more respectful... Oh well these are very good renditions...

HBO is an absolute DISGRACE! I just finished watching the HBO concert, and they only showed Ray performing All Day And All Of The Night and did not show You Really Got Me. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL not to mention DISRESPECTFUL in my opinion.

@guyzsly I didn't see the show but I agree with your comment.. those two songs are probably my least fave Kinks songs..
Bring on Autumn Almanac, Harry Rag, Death Of A Clown, Waterloo Sunset etc.
