If you google it you'll see all the info you need or anyone else, especially those living along the Gulf coast and in the direction of wind travel. People study up. If you smell rotten eggs ur to close since hydrogen sulfide is heavier than air plus them burning it off the water is creating clouds of poisonous gas.

I work in a refinery and test for benzine with gas testers every day. Ive dont that for 32 years now. IM still very much alive. For one thing our gas testers dont even read as low as 3400 PPB, they test in PPM. We also have corexit that we add to our cooling towers. It is a type of detergent. The MSDS which I looked up says prolonged contact may cause dermatitis. @Berndaustria hi Bern, the values I gave were for VOCs (including Benzene) and what I read was that the maximum exposure for 8h was about 1500 ppb (1.5ppm). Some populated areas are affected by values that are 3 to 7 times that.
I quick look at the H2S data shows that levels remain in a safer zone (under 1ppm).

The Jet Stream moves from West to East. So, the Northwest of the US should be well in the Clear! I had lived most of my life in the Northeast and the air currents and especially moisture always seems to travel up from the Gulf to the New York area. Has anyone out there been able to get Air Quality reading from the EPA involving the West Coast of Florida? The EPA has Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyzers (TAGA) being used along the gulf coast. The specific toxics being monitored by TAGA are benzene, toluene, & xylene. The TAGA monitoring has found that these air toxics are not present or are being detected at low levels in the areas monitored along the Gulf Coast & in New Orleans, LA. The levels found have been well below levels that would cause discomfort, irritation, or other minor effects.

@broadcastmyass4u I don't know about test, but you could start by reading up on Hydrogen Sulfide and Benzyne this stuff can cause a slew of ailments and can be fatal. If you google it you'll see all the info you need or anyone else, especially those living along the Gulf coast and in the direction of wind travel. People study up. If you smell rotten eggs ur to close since hydrogen sulfide is heavier than air plus them burning it off the water is creating clouds of poisonous gas.

They can talk about it "only" being 30 or 40 ppm SOME of the time, but who do they think they are kidding? I work in a refinery and test for benzine with gas testers every day. Ive dont that for 32 years now. IM still very much alive. For one thing our gas testers dont even read as low as 3400 PPB, they test in PPM. We also have corexit that we add to our cooling towers. It is a type of detergent. The MSDS which I looked up says prolonged contact may cause dermatitis. I sure hope I dont get on any planes you worked on. You evidently dont even know how to look up data. Necessary skill for a mechanic.

Large flotillas which brought fresh water, medical supplies and food were turned back by the so called authorities as well! The 8 hours work day exposure limit in the US for Benzene is about 1000-1500ppb !
Some people in the Louisiana area are breathing in way more all day long...WTF ?

there is a little different between ppb and ppm!!
In europe, special germany/austria, our Law says the MAK-Wert(in english:(Durating(8h)-Workerplace-KonzentrationValue), of H2S(hydrogen-sulfide) is at 10ppm, when reached worker have to leave workplace, or have to take masks, or ventilation is activated.
But 10ppm is equal to 10.000 ppb, so 1200ppb, can nothing then stink^

To US-Goverment and Locals, place maybe every 10 miles near the coast vehicles, where civilians can rent a gas measuring-instrument, for maybe 30mins or 1 hour,
which are calibrated for H2S, for 1 or 2 most explosvie/dangerous ex-Gases which appear for 100% there, and also for measuring CO2/ or O2, that your Civilians feel little more safer?
And explain them how to use it correctly...

@Berndaustria hi Bern, the values I gave were for VOCs (including Benzene) and what I read was that the maximum exposure for 8h was about 1500 ppb (1.5ppm). Some populated areas are affected by values that are 3 to 7 times that.
I quick look at the H2S data shows that levels remain in a safer zone (under 1ppm).

in Internet you find Benzene-Methanol, also Benzene-Ethanol, but 1 link tells that Benzene appears around forrest Fire and Vulcanos, was also first found 1812 like that and also called
Benzol.....C6H6....and this Gas i can find in my GasList:
TRK-Wert(Engl.TrueRoomConcentration-Value) is 5ppm = 5.000ppb

Benzol (maybe your US-Benzen-Problem) has a dense of:
2.7...
Normale fresh Air has 1..
So Benzol is heavy and sinks to the floor(when not much Air-Turbulence)
When Hot Day, no wind, and you have Benzen/Benzol-Alarm..
Try to get quick some alt, high building, maybe 100 meters can help in reality...

I downloaded some data sheets about the air analysis from the EPA, look at the 5/15/2010 at Chalmette C05 location...all day long... around 6000 ppb !
5/28/2010 at V03 location... 9300 ppb !
and numerous days with +5000 ppb in many locations.
is this data for real !?

people keep cool, each strong wind or storm, extremly lowers toxic-, or explosive-values, of gas-areas(clouds), because wind turbulense cause a mix of freshair with those gases....
but staying, or slow moving air could be a danger, because some gases are heavier then air...
Ask friends(working at Fuelstations/recyclingcenters/Mines), to help you out on a sunny day,where is not much wind, with measuring at your beach/home..

The Jet Stream moves from West to East. So, the Northwest of the US should be well in the Clear! I had lived most of my life in the Northeast and the air currents and especially moisture always seems to travel up from the Gulf to the New York area. Has anyone out there been able to get Air Quality reading from the EPA involving the West Coast of Florida? I called the Dep of EPA in Tampa and they weren't even aware that levels were high in Louisiana! What do we pay these folks for?

The EPA has Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyzers (TAGA) being used along the gulf coast. The specific toxics being monitored by TAGA are benzene, toluene, & xylene. The TAGA monitoring has found that these air toxics are not present or are being detected at low levels in the areas monitored along the Gulf Coast & in New Orleans, LA. The levels found have been well below levels that would cause discomfort, irritation, or other minor effects.
