does anyone else think that the popular medias portrayal of fencing perpetuates the publics misconception of our sport? i mean all the average citizen knows about our sport is mostly based on almost ancient standard that is portrayed in film. i think its time to move contemporary olympic fencing into the spotlight, and separate a legitimate sport from antique misconceptions. i mean 95% of this video is actors, what are you saying about the importance of the real fencers in there?
true and you do have a point -but we are not a REALLY competitive club, we fence for the giggles! Our whole thing is about appealing to what people have seen and then introing them to the proper stuff. Most laymen arnt interested in how cool the flunge was! - we appeal to the people who have seen the movies and want to learn that sort of fencing we are a wee college club, and it works for us!
Seriously? Most people don't get INTERESTED in fencing by watching the Olympics... MOST people I've talked to (in the US anyway) got into fencing after watching fencing or sword fighting in movies. You want a travesty of fencing...try that Eric Roberts fencing flick. Lay off the kids and go watch Princess Bride.
its great to get into any type of exercise for whatever reason u can think of, but the sooner we seperate our sport from these sorts of things the sooner we will see better fencing come out of our country, u know? i think it promotes kids not to take the athletic aspect as seriously as they should. im not saying this is reprehensible or anything, just that i think its why we see so few athletes taking or sport seriously. i dont know about u, but i would love to see our sport get more respect.
And This Exactly how you get Respect man!The movies and media reach out to everyone,they have a tendency to dictate what is cool and what is not cool for a lot of people,sure you're right fencing is not just about that hollywood flash but It is as with any other discipline,first you commercialise,then people will be attracted and research further and then the disciplined few will emerge,but you have to show it sometime and movies are a pretty good way for it to get respect
I get what you are saying, but this isnt a 'go start fencing' video its the reasons to fence for UUC- and we basically fence cus we are pretty geeky and want to be pirates or jedi! -its sad but true!

Our sales pitch is that you've seen it in the movies now come learn how to do it.
There are also pics and stuff from our nights out and events in it. Ultimately this is a fun vid for our freshers table...not a treatise on fencing....lighten up
what does this have to do with UUC as a club? its just a bunch of sword fights from movies and a Madonna music video that has nothing to do with actually fencing. if you tittle the video "look what UUC memebers can do with computers" then your video would make sense
Prime is the first move out of the scabbard in period fencing. A french grip is a simple stick grip, prime is EASY with a french grip... with a pistol grip on the other hand...
