Panie Piotrze. Wielki Tenorze. Dumo Polski. Jest Pan niezwykły. Nikt z Polaków w tej chwili tak nie śpiewa. Zachwyca Pan urodą, postawą i nieskończonym talentem. Great Pole. You are a pride of your Country. Thanks for all your songs, that making better all audience. Thank God for your talent. Go ahead!
People with no musical or singing knowledge are entitled to their opinions, but should restrict them to like or dislike. A singer usually has a natural vibrato, or can train the voice to sing a trill, but a tremolo is something altogether different and not of any real use to a singer. Mr Beczala is the great hope for opera today, he is relatively new to Verdi, and is meeting its demands beautifully. Singing at this level takes time and much work. The greatest Polish tenor since de Reszke.
@dracher You are fogetting Jian Kiepura. I don't want to start an argument about who's better if Beczala or Kiepura but you can't forget to name him when you are talking about polish tenors.
@MartinHouser the best tenor out there today has to be lawrence brownlee. this guy is definately good but he sings too open and loses alot of ring in the sound as a result, so his tone is fuzzy and unclear. he has a great voice but is still technically a bit weak imo.
@bigus, probably there is something with that "open" voice emission, which may cause that a part of volume is lost. But on the other side his emission is very constant in colour it means all registers are mixed on the highest quality if you compair with others. I have learned that when he knows one part very well, he opens his mouth less and his volume is darker and stronger. The question is if it is his natural voice emission, and needs also a time and a lot of repeatings. Piotr is very patient
@bigus omg, you are right about brownlee. i just listened to him now. his repertoire has potential to be more extended than beczala's or flores'. in a few more years he will be the best. i think his voice still needs to fill up more and in a decade he could be singing like pavarotti
@MartinHouser THE best living tenor out there, period. He has been perfecting his sound and understanding his repertoire, which can take a lifetime, rather than filling his pockets. He is, by far, the most perfect Rodolfo I have ever seen in video or live, when I saw him in La Boheme this year. Intelligent, sublime. I am not crazy about him in Verdi, at least in these youtube videos. He strikes me as a very 'modern' singer, with modern lines, perfect for Puccini.
@piax00 I don't agree that he is the best living tenor. I think he is the best living tenor in this vocal fach. For the leggiero lyrico roles, I love the work of Brownlee, Spyres and Tarver.
Beczala's voice only hit its stride 5 years ago. In a few years, trust me, everyone will forget about Villazon, Alagna, and Cura. IMHO this is the greatest tenor to emerge since Pav, Domingo, and Carreras.
What's not to love? Its all here. Beautiful lyric tenor sound, flawless technique, thrilling high notes, superb diction in all languages...All used with great intelligence, musicality and style.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't think Beczala is hurting for work. Having just seen him do a horrible Boheme and San Francisco opera. Singing at SFO, The Met, Salzburg Festival, etc, is not second tier. I also don't care for Piotr, but hate Calleja more. His stupid tremolo and flat singing through me off the whole night, though the one thing he is amazing at is decrescendo-ing the high notes into nothing. Unfortunately, he chooses to do it all the time, and not necessarily at the right places...
dg6da, Calleja's voice is not HUGE but it carries very well in the house. Joseph's voice is not smaller than many of the famous respected tenors such as Bergonzi, Valleti, Simoneau, etc. What you refer as a tremolo is actually a proper vibrato so absent in today's voices. I fully agree with 1Ooppera when he says both Beczala and Calleja are the best lyric tenors nowdays. Indeed they reflect they glorious singing of past golden years.
in is begginigs calleja had a noticeble tremolo in his voice. Now a days he had controlled it and he is singing much better than in his start. even though i think that Beczala is much superior.
There is no doubt that Mr Beczala and mr.Joseph Calleja are two best Tenore Liricos today, no doubt. Both have effortless technique, great carisma and above reborn Wunderlich and Björling. You can hear these qualities in their voices..It is not imitation, i think that it is impossible ahter certain pooint to imitate ones idol. These guys are the supersingers of today..Welcome the good old days!
...no doubt? Beczala: yes. Calleja: no. Calleja has an ugly "tremolo" in his voice, this is unusal. And his voice is much weaker than beczalas voice. get me right: i am not a fan of beczala, but i think he is much better than Calleja.
i agree comletely. there is a lot of wunderlich in becsala. You can tell he is a big fan. he even have some little semblance to wunderlich. But ther is no way you can compare Calleja to Björling... that is nonsense
The rec is masculin and great but Just before the aria starts You can hear for a split moment voice sound similar to the sound in Kuda Kuda, Onegin. This is a tech problem for rigoletto and he is always close too eating his own voice in the passaggio, a german style for Verdi.
Nello Santi is holding up very well-- He made his Met debut conducting Un Ballo In Maschera- with Carlo s Bergonzi in 1962 - Bergonzi another phenomenal Verdi interpreter
Fantastic! I'm so sad at what's happening to Villazon and equally happy that this guy was able to so excellently cover for him in "Lucia" on the Met's broadcast. I think he's this generation's Bjorling. Even looks like him!
The scary thing is that a fantastic tenor like this guy Beczala is a second row tenor, whereas impostors like Villazon have been given priority in major opera houses.
It's all a dirty business where connections, partnerships and hand shaking prevail over the art.
Where was this guy hidding?? What a great tenor!!!! Quite underrated though. This is the first time I hear from him and I have to say that I am really impressed. Bravo
@maestraconway Beczala refuses to sing anything that does not fit his voice, he sticks to his repertoire and is loyal to his opera company in Switzerland, where he honed his craft. This is why he is not marketed highly, he was just not singing everything the opera houses were scheduling. He was not prostituting his voice to suit the opera houses' schedules and programs. With a voice like his, it pays to wait before 'cashing in' to say it crassly.
Tomek! Thanks for this great clip. wonderful artist who also started in Linz. . but thank God he got the right repetoire there and built a nice career from that point. Is this clip from Zurich? I know he did alot there with Santi. All my best . Keep in touch

Damn, why couldn't he sing like this when I saw him and he totally bombed Faust in Chicago. Glad he can bring it for his recordings at least.

Exactly, he doen't have a marketing campaign like Villazon has. Also, he doesn't have Domingo as his mentor. Yet, Beczala is a much better singer.
He was not hidding. He just doesn't have the connections and marketing campaign that singers like Villazon have. That's all.
And let me tell you something, there are other great tenors out there like Joseph Calleja. Again, without a strong marketing campaign.
