those were the days when the Rangers did not televise the home games playoffs or regular season you had to listen to Marv Albert and the Big Whistle Bill Chadwick on WNEW-1130 AM
Those games were unbelievable. Growing up on Leafs Saturday nights and then Dan Kelly on CBS Sunday afternoons. Lots of games from MSG, Chicago Stadium, Metropolitan Sports Centre etc.
Remember this game very well. For some reason the 11 o'clock news in NY on Ch 4
began at 1130pm. Stemmer scored during their last commercial around 1158.
When they came back from commercial the anchorman Jim Hartz said"Ive got 5 seconds to tell you the Rangers won 3-2".And I remember the weatherman Frank
@liduck52 yea, notice none of us said that they saw the game because you needed manhattan cable to view garden events! if you lived in a nearby suburb like me, you were shut out! however, the northern part of rockland county was wired since 1969!!
i finished listening to this one on the radio in Hampton. Virginia lying down in upstairs hallway so my 9 volt transistor radio could tune in the NY radio station and Marv.
Game 5 of the 1979 Finals between the Habs and the Rangers was the last orig 6 Final game. We almost had one this year if the Bruins didn't gag and choke vs Phil.
I remember that this clip was from the NHL weekly highlight show which was narrated by Marv Albert and then Tim Ryan. I agree the Rangers got the shaft in the home ice advantage, but the Blackhawks owner, Wirtz really ran the NHL (Much like Ed Snyder does now) and he got the Blackhawks transferred to the then cushy western conference.
Rangers got even next season when they swept the Hawks in 4. Without Jean Rattelle and a healthy Rod Gilbert they couldn't overcome the Bruins, If the Gag line was healthy , 1940 would have never been a chant for the icelander fans and there would be 5 Banners in MSG. Losing those 2 guys would be like the icelanders losing Trottier and Bossy.
@dzanier I Agree except for one point: Those Ranger teams were as skilled as any team but they lacked one thing: Grit . It all came out in the 1974 semi vs the Broad Street pigs. Emile Francis did had a few tough guys like Hadfield, Irvine and Park. But when pig Schultz beat the crap outa Dale Rolfe and no one helped him, I was ashamed to say I was Ranger Fan. The 1994 cup team was a skilled team but a tough one with Mess, Bukeboom and lots of hard nose guys.
As a long-time Ranger fan, I am going to put on my tombstone that the Rangers should have had home ice advantage for the series. Why? in those years, from 1970-'74, I believe, the league had a balanced schedule where all teams in both east and west divisions played every other team 6 times. The Rangers finished 2nd in the East with more points than Chicago, which won the West. These days once you reach the semis the team with the better record gets game 7 on home ice. Chi won game 7 4-2.
@TheTzdope game 7 was tied and Brad Park made a dumb move when he shot the puck down to the Hawks end behind the red line which iced the puck and forced a face off between Angotti and Tzachuk and Angotti beat him clean , pased back to Bobby Hull who bombed it past Giacomin. If Park would have skated 3 feet more over the red line that face-off doesn't happen.
an epic....14 yrs old....had to get out of bedroom i shared with my brother in Hampton Virginia, so i could listen to Marv's call on my 9v am transistor radio...lying on the floor with pillow and blanket,,,the new york call crystal clear, past midnight..
Stemkowski scored I was yelping like there was no tomorrow, waking people who werent as into it.
Rise of the Rangers indeed...at least for one nnight.
Still my favorite hockey game of all time and I never watched it.Marv Albert and Bill Chadwick were my eyes as I listened on WNBC . No home games were telivised in those early 70's. My father ran into my bedroom 3 times to tell me to shut the radio off. I loved the near misses by Chicago in OT followed by Marv's orgazmick call of Stemkosski's game winning goal.I wish WGN in Chicago had the game in it's entirety.I also remember Bill Chadwick bitching about the length of the game .
Hard to believe that almost 40 years after the fact, the greatest line the Blueshirts ever had was tha GAG line! Man, those were the days even though they didn't win Lord Stanley....
While I agree this was a classic game, I would love to see video footage of the 7th game where Chicago eventually won the series. I remember it being a Sunday afternoon nationally televised game in Chicago on CBS. It was a very tight game with lots of action and great play by both teams. Chicago eventually took a 1 goal lead and iced the game on an empty net goal by Chico Maki. I imagine any network or affiliate video tape of this is long gone, but it sure would be a thrill to see it again.
the 71 series with the leafs and rangers was classic too...lots of fights and the infamous throwing of parents mask into the ranger crowd thanks to vic hadfield
I listened to this as a 10 yr old on a transistor radio , in bed very late at night. I really believe this was the best Rangers team of the era, but they really should have won it vs Chicago in 1973 when they lost to a weaker Hull less Blackhawk team. The Ranger failures of '70-'74 still haunt me. My wife says I need therapy !! Even 1994 did not wash them away.
Yeah I remember listening to this game also, on a transistor!! Albeit from NY I was and still remain a Bruin fan. Great Ranger Teams 70-74, but I don't know if they were ever the best team in any one of those season. This '71 team was terrific, but Boston and I think Chicago finished with better regular season records. The 72 Team finished 2nd to Boston, '73 finished 3rd in the East and the '74 team finished behind Philly and Boston in terms of points.
A great hockey game that I listened to on the radio. Peter Stemkowski won it in the 3rd overtime. But it was not to be the Ranger's year again as they lost the seventh game back at Chicago Stadium.
the only way you saw a home Rangers playoff game was on CBS on a Sun afternoon with Dan Kelly on the call

Hockey would be way better to watch on TV if it were like the old days.... no unsightly advertising on the boards and on the ice.

Rangers GAG line. Really good. Great era for hockey when NYR, CHI, MTL and BOS were the class of the league

That's probably thes best ranger team to never win the Stanley Cup. Harry Sinden said the teams were as even as two teams could be, except for Orr.

I agree with the previous post. Even back then, home ice should have been decided by the better record, not whether you won the division or not.

It was bad karma for stealing Red Wings players
(Stemkowski,Macgregor,Rolfe) during Darkness
under Harkness.
The guy destroyed the Team for years to come with his bonehead trades as GM.
I used to root for your team because of it.
