This was filmed at the Florentine Gardens in Hollywood CA...I was there. The entire show was released on vhs in Germany about 25 years ago and I'm sure you can find a copy floating round someplace. Good gig to see but unfortunately the reason I remember it so well is because that was the night I'd found out that a friend of mine, Federico De Laurentiis had died a few days before. He was up in Alaska filming a documentary on bears or something and his plane had collided mid air with another.

The really awesome Cab Calloway and Nicholas Brothers bit is from Stormy Weather, which is an amazing film. Lena Horne stars, and the singing and dancing is out of this world! Rent the film if you can find it, it is a classic of cinema.

I didn't see this tour, but I did catch him a couple of years later. Jumpin Jive totally influenced me when I was 14. I was already into Glenn Miller, but this album took me to a whole new level. Sadly, it was years before any Louis Jordan songs were available on CD (or vinyl). I wore three piece suits to school every day in Jr. High, for which I was mercilessly persecuted in 1979. Joe Jackson and his band totally defined my experience as a teenager, and I will never forget seeing them live.

I saw him do a stellar Jumpin' Jive performance at the Apollo Theater in Harlem back in '82. Brought the house down several times...JJ/the band had a limited swing repertoire- just what was on the LP, if memory serves...but, no worries...for encore they simply played the entire set over again and the house went all Excorcist...Incredible evening at a historic big band/swing era club. Whatta night!

I must say i do preffer the Big World tours version. With the piano in it.

You can pick up the LP or the CD for almost nothing. The performance and recording quality of the album is top shelf. A lot of care was taken producing Jumpin' Jive. One of the best sounding vinyl albums I own.

Get the 25th anniversiry dvd, for instance he reads the first chapter of his book before a concert. Saying, don,t worry, there will be a full concert after this ;-) he,s hilarious in his writing but but even more in reading it to the audience,hilarious stuff ;-)

This was filmed at the Florentine Gardens in Hollywood, 1981..rather appropriate venue considering it was one of the premier big band and swing dance halls of it's day...everybody from Benny Goodman to Fats Waller played here...needless to say, that's probably the reason Joe and the band chose to perform there.

"Jumpin Jive" is a great album. Once again Joe is ahead of his times, releases this album in the early-80s and swing has a revival a decade later.

Joe paying homage to Louis Jordan is a wonderful thing. If you like swing and jump, check out LOUIS JORDAN!
