Well yeah when you break it down it's all rock music. The defintion of rock music being "distorted guitars".

But I believe, at least partially, in the genre system because slayer is unlike the beatles and nirvana is unlike both of them. I like catagories being there so let me know if I'm going to listen to some kid whine, bitch or moan. (whine-rock, bitch-metal, moan-grunge).

grunge is a type of rock, yes, but the lyrical content, chord patterns and tempo separate it from regular "rock" music.
