  • I'll never tire of this f***** rockabilly music!! Is my drug. And I need it!!!

  • crazy guys arguing over music.

  • Dear Rev, Dunno to whom you be speakin' but I totally agree with what yer sayin. Anyone who disagrees is, flat-out, a moron. Thanks for the Burnette post!

Loves me some old school punk-a-billy! ;-D

  • This is just "Shake Rattle N Roll" with different words.

  • @elvisfan22 by Big Joe Turner or Elvis or Bill Haley ??

  • Burnette/ R&R Trio is great, Cramps are great, Ramones ARE the greatest USA punk band and always will be, period, end of story, and an example of how 60s pop/R&R/surf influenced punk (as did Bubblegum). If you don't believe the Ramones ask Stiv, or Johnny Thunders) (if you don't like them, or the Cramps what the hell do you think punk is?). Beach Boys are VOCAL surf though they played INSTRO suf on occasion; and are great. Seems like some people take this music thing too serious. Have some fun.

  • Wow, great music but a lot of people wanting to use the comments to promote theit theories of music as being the only possible truth. So I guess I'll jump in... this is the R&R Trio's best song, in my opinion. Paul Burlison is on of the greats too, period. Regarding his talents as well as Grady Martin's obvious talent.. as well as the relative merits of surf vs. punk or Cramps vs Elvis or anything else, an obsessive need to promote yr fave by putting down another artist is square and nerdy.

  • @BobTheRecordGuy Amen! In music there's room for all. The older I get the more I learn and understand. Thanx 4 yr comment! Oh, and I'm not so young either!

  • just" tear it up,"...RIGHT ? you got it? good.

  • this is pure rockabilly

  • If you want to see and hear how Paul Burlison played the distortion/octaves on the trio's classis..ck out a recent youtube entry..search Paul Burlison..go down to "Rock and Roll Trio"..P. burlison playing with DJ Fontana of Elvis fame and the Burnette cousins..ck the last song lead on "Honey Hush"

  • everyone knows where the 'billy' comes from... johnny always called the band's music 'rocky and billy music' because of his and his brother's sons names: Rocky and BIlly...

  • @SheepOnDrugz Wrong the name came from Hillbilly music it mixed rhythm and blues with hillbilly black and white sounds,Webb Peirce even coined the phrase "Rockabilly" in 1950 it was Western Swing with electric guitar ,nothing to do with Burnettes sons names.

  • @gamster68 How about this version. Rocky and Billy Burnette were born in Tennessee in 1953, making Dorsey and Johnny Burnette the fathers of Rock y Billy.

  • @gsavage115 you know i think your right there.nice work :-)

  • @gamster68 Actually there is no recorded use of the word "Rockabilly" prior to '53. Not by Webb Pierce or anyone else. Not in any song, written article, radio. & the Burnette song "Rock Billy Boogie" was written and sung in '53, (recorded '57). & the song is constantly mis-titled "Rockabilly Boogie" & not the true "Rock Billy Boogie".

  • @gamster68 So there is a lot more credible evidence that the true origin of the term "Rockabilly" comes from "Rock Billy Boogie" & no evidence whatsoever that the term comes from combining Rock with Hillbilly

  • I have an LP recorded in the eighties at Sun Studios. Paul Burlison plays lead on this song and it is identical to the lead in this earlier recording (the LP I have has other Sun musicians such as Malcolm Yelvington, Bob Geisley, J. Van Eaton, etc._

  • I LOVE mp3iffy it WORKS just google mp3iffy.

  • Alvin Lee was surely inspired by this. Check out I'm Going Home by Ten Years After!

  • @richicious Be sure to also check out The Cramps' version of this tune. Unbelievably good!

  • Paul Burlison live...Grady Martin was in Nashville backing up Patsy Cline...

  • Obviously Paul Burlison here..a live performance...Not Grady Martin...Any comments..

  • LETS TEAR THIS DAMN PLACE UP!!!

  • @AltamontKiller whats wrong?

  • music sucks compared to this REAL ROCK IN ROLL

  • @AltamontKiller Actually he's singing 'Let's tear the dance floor up' not 'damned place'

  • Johnny Burnette trio= ROCKABILLY

  • sex, sex & rock`n roll!

  • It always takes your breath away when you hear the real thing.

  • First time ever.. I exceeded my limit..so to be continued..Do you guys.. too cool dudes.. know that there are millions of people who wouldnt even know about Rockabilly if it werent for the STRAY CATS, THE CRAMPS, and ROBERT GORDON in the 80's..lighten up!

  • But it would have stayed real rockabilly!! the craps and the like were unemployed punks so they had to jump on the rockbilly bandwagon!!

  • "It would have stayed real rockabilly???"... It still is "real rockabilly". It's not LESS real rockabilly just because some bands in the 80's were smart enough to revitalize it. And for the kids who never heard it before the 80's...well how lucky they were. If they really LOVED the sound they no doubt sought out the 50's "real rockabilly roots" and discovered Johnny Burnette, Gene Vincent Eddie Cochran etc. Everyone wins..unless you can only see the negative!!!

  • @valinmal You're so right!

  • OMG you guys are so lame... and I never use my youtube account to bash. But Johnny Burnette was awesome but he was in the 50's. All great musicians are influenced by somebody. Burnette...brilliant...Lux Interior (RIP) & the Cramps..absolutely BRILLIANT.. He and Poison Ivy were at tons of Rockabilly shows that I went to in the 80's and they were always so awesome & low key... Brian and the Stray Cats...also absolutely BRILLIANT..

  • Fuck the cramps and the gay cats. This is the real deal. The beatles ruined rock and roll. This is where its at.

  • Spot on bro!!!

  • @freerook Bands like the Cramps, The Meteors, etc revitalized rockabilly post robert gordon. The vegas and indy weekenders are proof of that, and if you want to argue about this shit, might wanna ask Wanda Jackson her opinion on it, along with Jerry lee, (rip Jimmy Logsdon), and the few other folks still around from that era.

  • @freerook When Rock 'n' Roll was all but dead (check out 1962 charts), with the suits back in control, The Beatles brought R'n'R to the fore again. They played their versions of R'n'R hits on radio shows & live performances. Until they did so no other groups of the day would dare, choosing to go for the insipid ballads of the day. They brought Rock 'n Roll back to life. Okay, they couldn't be as good as the greats but the gave their careers a boost, look at Chuck Berry who was almost done then.

  • I think it was Paul Burleson on guitar..playing a Gretsch pancake..

  • The Cramps did do a great job covering this song so did the Stray Cats.

  • the real king of rock n roll

  • One of, if not THE greatest Rockabilly songs in the world.

  • Cramps did a great version. They've covered alot of old rockabilly songs. They did a great version of The Way I Walk, too

  • So did Robert Gordon!!!

  • you can tell jimmy page was influenced by the guitarist in this band

  • man this is wild!!

    rockabilly rules!

  • paddy6062 got it right first time defo crapps

  • It's a shame his boat got wrecked and he died on the lake i'm right by, near me.... i will light a candle for Johnny on 8/14, as should many people. let that train run All Night Long...

    peace. and love

    om- clearlake ca.

  • great song

  • Fantastic...this guy just gets better. Love Cramps version, too. You guys, check out Go Cat Go now......thanks again

  • This is classic stuff. For a different version, check out "The Carmps tear it up".

  • "This is classic stuff. For a different version, check out "The Carmps tear it up" Shit!!!!

This is a classic, And some skinny prick with no shirt on shouting the words is not an improvement on the Johnny Burnette version!!!!

  • I never said the 'Cramps' version was an improvement, just different. I enjoy watching the transition of musical styles, how Johnny Burnette was influenced by country and helped create 'rockabilly', then he influenced the 'surf' sound, the surf sound got into punk.

  • Not sure how you link surf to punk??

Punk was an underground sound that only a few would like,

it was not as big here as people think! and it had a sound of its own and did not use covers of records until it became commercial!

so unlike the rockabilly bands around today, punk has not stayed true to its roots!

  • I agree that punk did not stay true to it's roots, I only would link a few bands to the the true punk ethic: Ramones, Cramps, Television, etc. Surf music was a huge influence on many in the early punk scene due to it's raw sounds. Either way, I appreciate it all and love most of it!

  • A little late, but: Ramones.

Listen to the massive Beach Boys-influence in their sound. There you go, you bitter, old twat.

  • And!!! what is your point you dim prick!!!

  • "Not sure how you link surf to punk??"

That's how - that's my point. Now crawl back under your rock and pretend again the 50's never ended.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh the keyboard hard man..lol

That shit is not surf you fucking retarded prick!!!

  • As opposed to the keyboard scholar, it seems... OK, so the Beach Boys were not "Surf" - I'm very glad we got to talk about this topic, since now I'm absolutely sure you have not the faintest idea what you're even talking about and every additional word to you would be a total waste of time. Have fun, throwback.

  • Who the fuck said the beach boys were not surf you tiny pricked moron!!!!

  • OK, this is getting tiresome... so, which "shit is not surf" then? I was talking about the Beach Boys and the Ramones - the Ramones being my example of a surf-inspired PUNK-band. Which leaves exactly which other band?

Look, pal, it's not my fault you spend more time with coming up with another lame try at an insult than you obviously spend with reading, comprehending and actually answering my posts.

P.S.: What's that with your obvious obsession with my penis? That's a little unsettling, man.

  • Go to bed little boy your mummy should not let you on the computer unsupervised !!!

the point was that the Ramones are punk based band!! they have nothing to do with in any shape or form with surf!! now go away you retard and bother someone else that you can ACT hard with!!!

  • That's it, I give up - not because you made any sense, mind you, but because of your complete and obvious inability to follow a topic for even two posts. Last try:

-The Beach Boys were Surf music.

-The Ramones are a Punk band.

-The Ramones are very audibly inspired by the Beach Boys, amongst others.

-Therefore, there's a direct connection between Surf and Punk - at least as directly as between Country and Rockabilly (you DO know where the "-billy" comes from, do you?).

    Learn to live with it.

  • @TheReverendBizarre i would hesitate to call the beach boys surf, despite their name. they were a talented group responding to what was popular for a time. the beach boys were also a hot rod band while hot rod music was popular. i have no idea who or what you are responding to in your post, but i'm just pointing out one area where labeling bands shits its pants. Perhaps the beach boys can just be left as a pop band, a label as vague and flexible as their identity. mskdfkjsdf.

  • @TheReverendBizarre no way is there as direct a connection between punk and surf as country and rockabilly. the ramones were inspired by lost of bands, probably most notably the beatles and the stooges. And, while the ramones are often considered one of the first, if not the first, punk band. there sound was not the defining sound of punk. so, sorry try again later.

  • @TheReverendBizarre Surf music is instrumental. The Beach Boys were about the California Lifestyle. Dick Dale and others with the deep reverb guitar sound is Surf Music. Pipeline, Mr Moto, Surf Rider, Misirlou etc. That is Surf Music.

  • You spelled Cramps wrong, learn how to spell you prick.

  • Who gives a shit!! Carmps, cramps, crapes, crapp. its all the same to me!! So go play with yourself little boy!

  • Who gives a shit? I do, otherwise I wouldnt have bothered with some ass hole.

  • Yeh yeh talk big on your keyboard!! get yourself a girlfriend and out more! try and save your eyesight some say it makes you go blind!!

  • lol man im not even going to bother with some 46 year old thats acting like a 5 year old.

  • Good then dont!!! I never asked for you to come on here and call names just because i dont like the crapps version of tear it up!! faggot!!

  • Hey... dude or chick.. I know this was all friggin 8 months ago but you deserve some salt...whether this is a wound or not. Let's scroll back a bit..Paddy (whether you are a boy or girl) you are the one that started with the name calling. It's music.. Its all good and you don't have to like ALL OF IT! But some of us are ..um.. more opened minded. You don't have to respond..I won't.. after this one!

  • @valinmal Your comments about Paddy on 'Tear it up'. You're right. Paddy's wrong. Paddy is also a twat.

  • Oh yea!

  • pmsl So Are you saying the crapps are rockabilly??? if you are then you are the twat!!!

  • Thanks for this great recording! I am very new to hearing Johnny Burnett's music though love a lot of artists from the same era.

  • michandre21

"I am very new to hearing Johnny Burnett's music"

    Your in for a treat!

Johnny Burnett Along with Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran with their raw sounds made Rockabilly / Rock n Roll exciting!!

  • what the hell these are rockabilly kings....amen

  • Paul Burlison has been critized for not being an accomplished guitar picker. - They couldn't be more wrong!

  • This is Paul at his best, for sure. Owen Bradley didn't think much of him, however, which is why Grady Martin is on the lion's share of the Nashville sessions.

  • @mrtwang32 P. Burlison's son..Actually my dad was the co-lead on "train Kept Rollin"..If you listen..the deeper fuzz tone ..lead in middle is my dad as in Honey hush/rock therapy and others..single track 1956..two leads..

  • @dburlison1 Hi DB, I have always believed there are two electric guitars on "Train..." -- they end on two differents beats, for one thing! There are also two electrics on "Blues Stay Away From Me" although I don't hear two on "Honey Hush" and "Therapy" -- but agree there is room for more investigation. No question re. the "Tear it Up" NY sessions, though, That's Paul for sure.

  • @mrtwang32 ...Appreciate you interese..Pardon my error, but the fuzz tone octaves are also found on"Rock a Billie Biggie" Not "Rock Therapy"(Also with My dad most of the lead"Honey Hus"..same sound as "Train kept Rollin" fuzz..Also listen to GM attempt at FUZZ tone in Marty 'Robbin's 1961 hit "Don't worry"...Gm website says this was the first fuzz tone , but distinctly different from the trio's fuzz of 1956..

  • @mrtwang32 On "Blues Stay Away From Me' that is actually a duo on Johnny and Dorsey(who also had a great voice and a great writer)..If anyone is interested.. I can explain the split between Dorsey and the trio(Dad and Johnny)..A very interesting story..Dorsey actuall left..relatively long story..but quite a story..

  • @dburlison1 Also if you get a chance ck on the trio's recording "O Baby Babe"

recorded in the NY Session.. and considering this was one of the very first rock in roll cuts..not that bad..My dad again plaining the high tenor notes That the producer/Bob Thiel..(a big band producer) wanted dad to hit..

  • @mrtwang32 Appreciate your interest..actually " Honey Hush" is very similar to the Deeper Fuzz tone leads heard in" Train kept Rollin"..(Played by P .Burlison)..GM could not have played the treble licks and the deeper fuzz tone on these 56 single track cuts..Also, one overlooked song of the trio cuts in NY gives you a taste of the early.early days of "Rock n Roll" ck out "O Baby Babe"..dad

playing the high tenor notes requested by the NY Bigband producer..Bob Thiel

  • @mrtwang32 ..Actually " Honey Hush" is very similar to the Deeper Fuzz tone leads heard in" Train kept Rollin"..(Played by dad)..GM could not have played the treble licks& the deeper fuzz tone on these 56 single track cuts..Also, one overlooked song of the trio cuts in NY gives you a taste of the early.early days of "Rock n Roll" ck out "O Baby Babe"..B Thiel (NYproducer) liked tenor lead

  • @dburlison1 One last thing..I feel confident that the reason my Dad and Dorsey did not show up for the 57 sessions (knowing both and their professional pride)..they both saw that Owen Bradley was wanting to promote his artist(Martin and Bradley)and Dorsey and dad said screw you Bradley for the 57 sessions..medicore recordings..Honey Hush..Train..dad and dorsey..two of the most charsismatic an talented men you would ever meet..ask any who knew them

  • @mrtwang32 Sounds to me as though there is another guitiar on 'Train Kept a Rolling' but only after the lead break-it may be an overdub. The sound is quite mushy so can't be 100%.

I'm positive that all the guitar on those sessions is by Grady Martin though as I've listened to all his rock'n'roll output from that be period and it's all his trademark sound and licks,

  • @whest There is no doubt whihc is Grady .. all the great playing ! I can list exactly which is GM if you want .. by the way I communicated with Bob Moore 2 years ago .. he was the actual bass player and he still had his diary with the session notes and who was there always him and GM .. always .. even listed the songs. tear it upis PB for sure .. nothing like the finesse and fluidity of GM ... I never liked this track anyway.
