I became a muslim when I was18 years old. Ironically I bought in to it partly because I'd been told women have more rights and value in Islam. Ten years later, I discarded my hijab and reclaimed my soul... It took many years for me to overcome the brainwashing I had subjected myself to, but I learned some valuable lessons about myself and organised religions/cult from having that experience.

When i converted to Islam, my family pretty much disowned me. And when I abandoned Islam, my muslim "friends" abandoned me too. I'm no longer the insecure, abused little girl I was when I was 18. I'm not anti Islam or anti muslim, I just don't believe we need organised religion to be good people.

I became a muslim when I was18 years old. Ironically I bought in to it partly because I'd been told women have more rights and value in Islam. Ten years later, I discarded my hijab and reclaimed my soul... It took many years for me to overcome the brainwashing I had subjected myself to, but I learned some valuable lessons about myself and organised religions/cult from having that experience.

When i converted to Islam, my family pretty much disowned me. And when I abandoned Islam, my muslim "friends" abandoned me too. I'm no longer the insecure, abused little girl I was when I was 18. I'm not anti Islam or anti muslim, I just don't believe we need organised religion to be good people.

I was a Muslim, I had to learn the quran even though I never wanted to, when other children played I was getting hit every time I spelt a letter in the quran wrong, this was a small hit with the hand, god no it was with a stick, I tried running away from the mosque but the punishment, was great so great I had two days on beating none stop, by the teachers when I got home I was shouted at constantly for disobeying, I knew it wad wrong but if I dare speak against it, the punishments won't stop.

@dickknows The Arabic word "qanitat" was originally used in that verse and is not referring in obedience to the husband but rather to Allah. "qawwam" was also originally used and is referring to men serving as protectors as opposed to be superior. Men are physically designed with more strength than women and would only logically serve that role of protection. "adriboo" doesn't necessarily mean to "beat them" but 'to forsake, to avoid, to leave'. Don't quote things which you know nothing about.

Read the entire Surah out of context and the true meaning is clear, those verses are not an outright calling and are only applied in certain situations. The Quran is a book of revelations and each Surah was revealed in chronological order according to the events at the time.

If some irrational human beings use the Quran and misinterpret something to justify their actions, that is wrong. However, it is also advised to take what makes the most logical sense. Some muslims act out on their own, out of anger. Not because their religion tells them so. They chose to do this.
