I thought 'sounding Karaoke' was when the singer tried to copy the original artist's performance too much, as well as sounding unprofessional..... That's where Anoop got into trouble - he even attempted some of MJ's (simpler ) dance moves. Lambert didn't do any dancing even remotely close to MJ.
Yes, this is also true and a more obvious explanation, though I don't feel like Anoop was trying to copy Jackson. He just hadn't quite figured out his authentic connection to the song yet. Another meaning hidden behind the judges' use of the term "karaoke" is that the singer is not hitting all of the 'right' notes from a true place.
