I turn 47 next week. One of the first albums I remember playing on my new General Electric one-piece turntable/speakers was "Time in a Bottle". To this day his music still moves me. What an amazing talent he truly was. He had just died in the plane crash before that B'day of mine. The other album I got was Chicago. I thank God my parents had a diverse taste for music. Peace to you all.
@cedredecat I had the album with Jim standing in the window sill staring out at you. I didn't have the 45 i had the 33 rpm ! :-) I would guess Rapid Roy? I don't honestly know.
@kansasisaband Hard Time Losin' Man according to eBay ;-) Oh, and Jim died on September 20th...3 days before my birthday on the 23rd. We have a lot in common ;-)
He kind of reminded me of Groucho Marx. I had a couple of his albums. Loved listening to him. His hit "Time in a Bottle" is one of my favorite instrumentals to play on the guitar. He still reminds me of Groucho Marx. LOL
@yeoj1925 Yes. Jim Croce was Italian-American. If you buy Ingrid Croce's book, "Thyme in a Bottle", you will learn a lot about Jim Croce that you probably never knew before.
@clouddancer3107 Never stated he was the best picker. Just mentioned to watch his fingerwork. He and Maury played so well together it pains me to even think they were taken from us so quickly. Peace.
Jim Croce was one of the first singer songwriter guitarists i learned how to play when i was 6 years old. I am now 45. My family knew someone who worked for ABC/Dunhill and got me all of his albums that had been released up to that time. I am a huge fan and I am surprised he is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Watch his fingerwork on all of his songs. Incredible. Every song I hear brings a tear to my eye.
@marty7433 Yes I agree with you to a point. He is a great picker and his music is so memorable. But IMHO John Denver is the bets picker there ever was/is. Just my opinion. Peace!
@marty7433 Yes I agree with you to a point. He is a great picker and his music is so memorable. But IMHO John Denver is the best picker there ever was/is. Just my opinion. Peace!
@Hgman13 Yes, and Richie Valens (La Bomba) and the Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace) died in the same crash. In the song "Bye Bye, Miss American Pie" it's referred to as "the day the music died". I think it was in 1959.
@garymichaelshannon That is very true. I was responding to the post from Hgman13. He asked if Buddy Holly died in a plane crash. I said "Yes, and Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in the same crash." I was not saying that Jim Croce died in that 1959 plane crash.
@banjotune22 Maury Muehleisen, he recorded some of his own stuff, and actually Jim was his back-up guitarist first! They were on the plane together. :o(
I lived in NY for 5 miserable years. I'll never forget about 2 years in, this song came on the radio and I just bawled. Luckily, I got out of there and am now back where I am happy and home. <3
My favorite Jim Croce song, though he had so many great ones. I was just a kid when his plane crashed. I've alway wondered what influence he would have had on music had he lived.
look im not gonna try to pick a fight here with you cuz frankly its pretty fukkin pathetic. if we were in person it would be different but heres how i see it, you dont know me i dont want to know you lets leave it at that you get what im sayin? anything you write after this wont much matter to me cuz i've said all i've gotta say
and by the way my musical preferences dont include rap but i do have a thing for metal, jazz, blues, and classical music if it itched your nuts enough to know
Beautiful piece!!! does anyone know if there are any documenatires about our friend jim? i know there was a behind the music..but i can find that anywher!
if you're not coming from new york or another big city type of setting but instead come from a calm suburb or country like setting and try to adapt to the city lifestyle chances are you arent going to feel welcome because each place has its own identity which is what gives it its own distinction among the rest of the states.
im not a croce fan but i appreciate the messages within his songs but i feel this song is unfair pinning the fault solely on New York. i feel he couldve been a bit more broad.
cities are fast paced, its a well known fact. New york is a city of impatient people, the type of people who got things to do. i wouldnt expect a person coming from anyone of the aforementioned slower paced places to feel like they can make it their home without it costing them a nut and a half. but growing up where i did i love this city of New York, even if it contains a few ass holes all you can do is out do them.
OMG!! This is the perfect song for me this month and year!!! I finally got to move out of NY because it never felt like home;-) and here I am listening to this song for the first time and relating so much;-) awesome!!
@tygear34 Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Rick Nelson, Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen, all amazing talents, and all killed in plane crashes trying to make the next gig. No one said life was fair--but DAMN!
@cedredecat I agree to a point. I was a Crew Chief (glorified gunner/mechanic) on a chopper (helicopter) in the Marine Corps. Really a chopper is a rotary wing aircraft, or "airplane". At least with a chopper, if the main rotor isn't locked up or the rotor blades aren't damaged--and if you're above 300 feet--there is at least a chance of auto rotating and having a rough but relatively safe landing. In Stevie Ray Vaughan's case it was the weather and pilot, not the chopper, that killed him.
there aint many artist who you can listen to EVERY one of there songs and say you LOVE it..I am and have been a huge fan of Jim Croce. cannot get much better. Long live true music...
I agree with Cristalship88. Artists like JT, JC, Harry Chapin, and I'll add JD, actually knew how a guitar was supposed to be played, and how to write a good song! Not to say no artists know how to write good song now, but I guess they just don't write them like they used too.
i disagree. I'm barely 21 and grew up with this. Granted most people my age listen to rap and no-talent pop stars, but they're also all pretty fucking stupid. :-\
Agreed I was est. in 1986 -- my dad brought me up well, and by that I mean showing me what true music was -- that was to create and listen to music from the heart. Croce and the gang are my mentors.
Honestly, I wasn't meant to live in my generation, so on that note we all have to learn to break 'generation' barriors... I'm sure you all could hang out and have a beer with me... a little Croce in everyone's life would probably solve some global issues :)
Funny u ask that. Jim And James are my 2 favorite of all time.. Wish we could have been privy to more Jim.. The world may never know.. I think he would have .. No.. I know he would have been as great as James Taylor
I love seeing these videos of Jim and Maury live. I knew the songs when I was young, but not the singers. I've always thought this song was hauntingly beautiful.

If your ever in San Diego go to Croce, it's in the gas light district. His wife and son own it. Cool place and people and a lot of jims stuff to look at. I really love his music and turned my 16 yr old son onto him, funny thing is he plays these songs better than i do.
I agree, Jim is one of the best folk singers. Even though I love NYC and I am sure those of you who are from NYC have your opinions, I think his song really speaks from the heart. Thanks Jim.
i 1st played this about 30 yrs ago in a gig and the crowd went WOW!!! and until now it never lost its magic. For sure jim's a better singer than me. He's got incomparable soul. Just look at his eyes when he is singing. He's like telling a tale real close to his heart. But i sure did gave justice to this once seldom heard song during my time as a folk singer. Thanks maxstratos for posting this!!!
no one can sing today like jim croce does...he's just full of passion and when he sings his voice touches our souls. 'love your music and the legend that you have always been.
Jim Croce is the best songwriter and guitarist ever lived inspired by true events not like the other singers in these days rest in peace big bad Jim Croce.
