The recording I listened to over and over by Leonard Slatkin/St. Louis is at this same tempo or even slightly slower. There is no reason to hurry the intro to this piece unless your brass players don't have the chops to hold the notes.

@FellunB I agree with FellunB. This movement of Copland's Third is extremely reminiscent to me of the first movement of Mahler's First, and the openings of both should be taken at about the same tempo. BTW, in his writings, Copland always spoke highly of Mahler's handling of the symphonic form.
Great video - wish we could have better closeups of the players though.
