@geofftubeyou The mirror reflects the light from the sun into the oven. The black granite slab absorbs the light and retains heat. Cooking baked potatoes in tinfoil doesn't work in the solar oven because it reflects the heat away. But black cookware heats up extra hot.
nothing surrounding catches on fire, like the treees or grass? neighbors down the road arent blinded while driving from reflection? i would like to try one but worried about my woods
It will not catch the woods surrounding the oven on fire, however the reflectors are bright so you may want to block the reflection to your neighbors. Try it!!!
@mrshammerhankus this type of box cooker does not create enough heat intensity to start a fire. The parabolic type solar collectors can start fires for sure. It can create a glare, though. It's best to wear sunglasses.
@pkrska - you can turn it away from the sun to "turn the temperature down" or you can put the mirror down to keep more sun from getting in...generally food doesn't burn in it, (like the kind of burning we're used to- turning black) but when you overcook it gets more mushy (because condensation doesn't escape the oven- it stays moist) You learn to work with the sun - you kind of let the sun determine when you cook
GREAT OVEN! BEEN WANTING TO BUILD ONE SIMILAR TO THAT! Keep building and posting! I try to tell folks if they are going to build one, try to make it more shallow and long so they can put up to three pans of food in and still have area all around the pots for the sun to hit which helps maintain temps. TWO THUMBS UP!
this is so cool.

Nice Video. What does the mirror do? I notice its kind of angled downward. (towards the granite countertop)

What aboit using a desicant or some other material while cooking to soak up the excess moisture?
ShaneMorgan73 5 months ago
Awww. I'm so disappointed. I thought I would have seen the oven cook a pizza topped to look like the sun.

Wow, I would love to taste bread from that oven, once I am on my land, that is the type that I will also make. Please show more.

You had a pizza party last NIGHT ? :)
Well done, looks like it does the job 100%.
Have not you figured a way for the moisture to escape ? E.g. drill little holes or something ?
dtripakis 10 months ago
@dtripakis Glad you like it! if you drilled holes then the heat would escape and it wouldn't get hot enough!

So easy a caveman could do it...
It is cool that you had solar oven pizza last night, just messing man. I like your oven and want to build on too.
PS - nice song choice...

How do you prevent burning the food too much. It's not like there is a temperature control. Or is there?

@pkrska,
Yes, the pizzas are made in the day and the oven stays warm for a bit after the sun goes down. Then it is time to feast!

very nice and shallow depth means it will get hot quick. I built an oven myself different mirror setup funnel type.
