I just want to say HI to Bob Caldwell---- are you out there???? It's Leslie H. from Fenton, MI Loved you so much back in the day!!!!! Every Sunday night at Riviera Terrace in Flint MI. <3
Terry wrote some of the best lyrics of the sixties, which is saying quite alot. I also think the lyric in the first of these songs of the daughter's protective father demanding he "leave my daughter alone" is terribly ironic given the way Terry would meet his tragic demise so many years later. Alas, we've got so many cool songs like these to serve as a reminder of his colorful creativity.
"Mister You're a better man than I" is one of my favorite songs from Terry Knight. This stuff beats rap-crap hands down. Being from Flint, Mi, we had a lot of area groups back then. Grand Funk,
Terry Knight and the Pack, Dick Wagner and the Frost to name a few.
this is "INCREDIBLY" * "AWESOME" !*!*! dude! wat da heck dis music industry wait'n fer to put out dis "WONDERFUL" & "REMARKABLE" "60s MUSIC" on "cd" man ? ? ? !*!*!*! Loving it !*!*! =oD !thanks!
I finally found a CD of Terry Knight and the Pack songs titled The Pack Anthology. Feel bad that Terry's name is not on there. Probably to do with all the bad blood between him & the Pack. Stinkin' shame really......
Yeah, I've seen that online. As far as I can tell it's nothing but a cheap bootleg. I've never considered it worthy of my money or time. Hopefully the Cameo/Abkco people will release a proper CD of TK&tP material like they did a few years ago with the Mysterians' stuff.
I met Terry Knight when he was a DJ for CKLW, I played in a local Detroit band. He was always a nice guy to us, despite all I have heard from GFR, hard feelings I suppose. When Terry returned from England we backed some acts including Brenda Lee at the opening of a shopping mall that Terry MC'd, he looked really cool and said he hung around with the Stones and they asked him if he was interested in joining the group to replace Brian Jones who was unreliable due to drugs. Is this true? Perhaps.
He came across to me as a nice guy, a lot of nice guys , unfortunately, found drugs. Perhaps later his demeanor changed due to the drug use. What a waste of a life, too bad.
Terry was a client a client of mine in Westport, CT. He had a Lear Jet and raced with Paul Newman. He married a gorgeous stewardness named Pia and enjoyed watching her with other guys (not me). One day he asked me ( a struggling arist) to borrow $100. It was then I realized he had a horrible drug problem and was bout to self destruct. I called him after he moved to Arizona but he was in no condition to take my call. I would love to hear more apout his early days.
Do you believe his story of The Rolling Stones asking him to join the band? Perhaps that was tossed around in jest or one of the band members talked to Terry about it. At that time the Stones trailed only the Beatles in popularity so it seems odd that they would consider adding someone else, I don't believe Brian had developed his horrendous drug problems at that time.
Although it's a an established fact that every one of their songs is a Rutles like parody of some other tune, this is the only instance I know of where they actually mention the name of the tune they're aping in the song ("Jagger and his cloud"). That second song is obviously a reworking of the Merry Go Round's "Live."
I'm with you on the Stones-sounding "How Much More," but I don't see the connection between "I Got News for You" and "Live." "News" is a nice little R&B shaker--very different style from the nice pop of "Live."
I love the last song on this record, who's singing on it? Sounds like Donny Brewer but not sure. Mark Farner is my favorite singer. Is there any solo singing by Mark Farner with Terry Knight and the Pack?
That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I think each of these three songs has a different singer, and althuogh I know the first one is Terry, I'm not sure about the others. Unlike on some 60s albums, the singer for each song isn't listed on their records. Your guess is as good as mine.
Mark and Donny sing on "I've Got News", I think it's Mark on "Down In The Valley"...I'm waiting for a call back from Bobby Caldwell to find out for sure.
Sorry...I answered the wrong blog - Mark & Donny sing on "I've Got News" - I think it's Mark on "Down In The Valley" - I'm waiting for a call back from Bobby Caldwell to find out for sure.
Thanks Pianorman. I gotta disagree with Bobby Caldwell. I know Mark Farner's voice inside out and backwards, no way is this Mark's voice on "Down in the Valley." Donny Brewer was singing this song . Donny has a smoky and raspier voice. Please have Bobby Caldwell listen to this song, and you'll see I'm right. No doubt in my mind on this one.
Actually, no. It's Farner 100 per cent who sing 'Down In The Valley'. The Fabulous Pack recorded it days after Knight had left the band (April 1967) at the Cinderella Studios in Nashville, TN.
Brewer was singing 'Harlem Shuffle' (along with Farner) also recorded the same period and released as a single shortly after (in May '67).
I can get you a CD that Mark compiled called "The Pack - Anthology"...a project he did just a couple years ago, if you're interested. I'm a friend of Bobby Caldwell's and Herm Jackson's (Pack members), and I'm sure they have some CDs still in a box, if not I know Mark does. Let me know.
I checked on getting you a copy of "The Pack" anthology CD through Bobby Caldwell - he sold what he had left to a vendor in Flint, but said if you go through Mark Farner's website (google it), you should be able to buy one (or more). Good luck.

For those who weren't there, Detroit was a very very cool place. Fab cars and bikes, the Hideout, The Grandy, Alvins
Woodward, Henry's.
Like the best movie to be in. Alot happened. Dylan came, the Stones, T Rex.
This was just part of the most amazing time in the Motorcity.

Another find for me . A band I had heard of before but never had heard any material. I like them....quite an English sound for an American band.

The one I have is on the Lucky Eleven label. I think it's the one that pianorman is referring to in some earlier posts. He said Mark compiled it.

Cool! I grew up in Massillon, OH--about an hour east of Mansfield. The Pack were very, very popular in the northern part of Ohio.

I remember Terry once saying that he helped write Lady Jane. Don't know if it's true but it certainly is more Terry's style than Mick's.
