I find this topic of great importance, especially for us as students, who are starting out in the business environment. By understanding our objectives it will help us to benchmark ourselves against our overall goals so that we are able to grow successfully as an individual. By having a clearly articulated plan, this strong foundation of knowledge of what objectives are will ensure success...not just in business but, in life!
Thank you for this video. It's a very nice summary of the GOPST and the examples help to understand the concepts. I agree with Hassan on South Carolina answer, that just fit perfectly in your explanation! I think many organizations could learn from this and instead of calling everything "strategies" and "missions", they should re-evaluate their thinking. If I ever open my own business, I will definitely use the GOPST framework.
Couple of things that stuck with me from this video was that I think realizing the importance of the orders that the objectives strategies and tactics have to be followed to a measurable amount in order for goals to be achieved. and also if the plans are not working out its important to take note and change the goals objectives strategies and tactics, because you "do the same thing you get the same results."
This is also a concept explored in project management, and web analytics. The idea of milestones (or measurable objectives) is pretty much pervasive anywhere you look. This also reminds me of something you mentioned in 322 when you discussed the process of obtaining your black belt in North America. vs Japan: here you go from white to brown, yellow, purple etc whereas in Japan you achieve black belt directly from white over an extended period of training. - Marc N 415
A very interesting fact that this video points out is "that a part of developing a goal is to find out what the competition is". This has been explained very well by the bench press example. So, if the goal is to be the strongest man in the world, it is important to know what the other men are doing as well.
The example of the weight lifting really proved how measurable objectives are important. If the person was just training and not recording what he was lifting he would have no idea if he was doing well or even getting near his goal. By recording a number this allows the objectives to be measurable working towards the goal.
@VickyStonch "By recording a number this allows the objectives to be measurable " yes, an important point Vicky, part of achieving success is you have to keep track and write down or document your progress so you can evaluate how well you are progressing to achieve the goal
Great clarification using the bench press example. I was, primarily, having problems between tactics and strategies and the examples differentiated the definitions in a easy-to-understand situation. And obviously, the nail in the coffin at the end with the oh-so-intellectual response by South Carolina.
@hassannaeemime "oh-so-intellectual response by Miss South Carolina", ya Hassan, that kinda just fit right in there eh....sometimes you get your message acrosss using a little bit of humour
Two examples in this video allowed me to understand the topic better. First, the Einstein quote helped clarify the relationship between plans and objectives. I also think the car dealership example regarding goals and measurable objectives, makes the difference between the two more obvious.
@zkMGD415 yes Zain, the Einstein quote is really important to remember cause there are many many people who just keep thinking, "try again, try again" without thinking "try differently again"... maybe it is human nature, am not sure
Very helpful video! I've been plagued by the problem of not REALLY knowing the difference between tactics, strategies, and plans, this video helped to clear that up for me. It was also a nice review of what you said in class, using the same examples really helped to refresh my memory and deepen my understanding.
By watch this video,I have a clearer mindset about how to make plans and have a more thorough understanding of the difference between goal and objective.
I never really thought about Goals in this way before. I used to just kind of view goals as goals, although i knew you needed to work up to those goals, I never broke it down in the way you have for us. I realized I have a few goals that I could evaluate in more detail and that will make them easier for me to achieve. You use good examples.
GOPST definitely applies lots of things other than in business. The concept can be use to achieve realistic result instead of thinking through your head. You might have a huge plan in your mind but don't know how to achieve it, planning helps you to achieve your objective piece by piece in order to achieve your goal.
In order to become successful in achieving your objectives you must not follow one constant routine. If you keep doing the same things over and over and over and over and over, do not expect changes. Your objectives must also be measurable.
Objectives are measurable and can be divided up into several tasks (plans) to achieve the goal. They must be realistic and time specific to create motivation to strive for. Ex. You are motivated and want to achieve bench pressing 900 pounds.
If you find that you are not making progress toward your objective and you are required to change your plans, this would mean that your strategies and tactics would have to change as well. This mean that a firm may have continuously changing plans, strategies, and tactics if they are not making progress.
In order to know that you are successful in the business you need to be able to create goals for success. Your objective will be a tool to get to where you want to be and if you find out you have fail you need to change your strategy for your business.
Creating measurable goals or objectives is essential in the competitive environment. Not only for enabling yourself to completing a goal but to even enhance your goals to better products or services when you know the goal will be met.
Tracking your progress is important when it comes to the competitive environment. Measurable objectives are key for success so that one can attain and achieve them.
It's important to ensure that your objectives are measurable so as to be able to judge whether you are on track to reaching your goals and if you need to adjust anything to get back on track.
Goals must be mearsurable. it very important to conduct SWOT analysis - this will provide insight on what you need to work on and what you are good at.
This video really clarifies that there are different tools that you can use to measure different objectives. Getting a little bit further, this tool will help to develop and use the correct model for an specific company. In my opinion, as long as the Goal and the objectives are clear, the planing activity could be flexible in different ways as long as it does not go too far from the original. There should always be an option "a" and "b" in order to reach the desire task.
if you have a goal to be able to Dunk a basketball. you're not going to be to gym and taking jump shots. the first sep would be to work on jumping without the ball, just working on being able to grab on to the rim. after the jumping stage is complete then the objective is to combine jumping and putting the ball in the net. just an example..
Great Example !!! Gopst can definitely help to develop a good business or a website for a company but we can also use it for our daily work and that is amazing. for example goal- buy a car, objective - buy the car by the end of 2012, plan - get a license, save money etc ..
It is important for objectives to be measurable otherwise they can be vague and various people in a company or project would have a different idea of what the objective is.
I'm attending a fighting game tournament this weekend and I could set a measurable objective: to place top 8. My strategy is to not get reckless or drop combos and some of the tactics I'll employ include mixing up the opponent into dropping their guard and frustrating them into using unsafe attacks.
One’s goal should be singular number but objectives can multiple and it should be measurable. Suppose my goal is have a good night sleep. My objective will be put my 16 month old son to a goodnight sleep and have a shower. But if I fulfill my objective but still cannot have a goodnight sleep that means I need to increase my measurable objective. I was hungry that makes me awake. I therefore need to add a new objective, have a good meal before sleeping.
Great video, really help to figure out what measurable objectives are. The greatest point that I found at this video is located almost at the end, about big companies which divide up their objectives to the measurable units. By dividing to the small units you can ensure that you are on the right track. If you cannot achieve your objective, than you have to understand that you either underestimate you capabilities, or you have to change your plans, strategies and tactics.
The example mentioned in the video about being the strongest man in the world. It applies on a regular base for people that goes to the gym because majority of the people their has the same goal, to be in shape so having objectives, strategy, and tactics will get you there.
Overall, the video had good explanations of how it all connects and the importance of measurable objectives .
The words strategy, tactics, and objectives should not be new for those who play Call Of Duty like myself. An example of an objective from the game would be to defend or destroy something depending on which team you are on. A strategy would be to wait and hide on your team's side of the map if you are the defending team. A tactic would be for the whole team to use silencers so that their location will not be revealed when they shoot thier guns.
I didn't realize how important measurable objectives were. It makes sense to keep track but with these big companies, people assume they're doing fine until something goes wrong.
Measurable objectives are definitely important, they help keep track of progress. One definitely has to change the focus of resources available to accomplish every objective.
It is also very important to have well-written goals and objectives, so one is clear about what he has to do and can figure out how to do it.
