I think it could be a case of getting things in perspective. Harty isn't being snobbish about D's accent, Harty's accent is absolute North England working class, especially in comparison to D's who has refined his to sound almost 'posh'. Russell Harty was on of Britains chat show hosts in the early 70`s right through to the late 80`s. He interviewed some of the biggest pop stars of the time including the Who. He was very intelligent having previously taught at a private school and was on the same level as michael parkinson. He died in 1988 aged 53 after drinking dodgy water in Italy and contracting Hepatitas B during a recording of his latest chat show.

Thatcher had just brought in claus 28 (?) which forbade homosexuals from kissing or even holding hands in the street!, just to make matters worse.
