  • is your bench a pinball machine?

  • you always have to have an exhaust system... all LEGAL laser cutters have at least 1 exhaust pipe, and another for the tube.........

ALWAYS TURN YOUR EXHAUST ON KIDS

  • Or pump them into your neighbors yard? Are you a sociopath?

  • I have some 200mm single crystal germanium which would probably work even better than silicon. It's also worth more than my car.

  • @ngneer999 Drool.

  • ia331411.us.archive.org/3/items/TvQuran.com__1/TvQuran.com__020.mp3

  • Neat. I know quartz is transparent / semi-transparent / opaque around the UV to x-ray spectrum. but didn't realize silicon will pass IR. I wrote to hearasus (sp?) about UV and they were going on about how difficult it was to design quartz lamps due to the the quartz going opaque as they tried to shift from longer UV to X-rays. Both of those being clear, but going milky as it moves between the two. I had an a plan, but need a turbo pump to test it, and all the other high end ion gear.

  • Very informative video now I wish I had a laser etching machine. xD

  • Perfect! :)

  • does it not have a glass lens already?

  • @awesomizer The lens is Zinc Selenide. If you look in the video you can see it's a nearly opaque amber color.

  • why not just use regular glass instead of silicon?

  • @awesomizer Glass is not transparent to IR. That is why you can use this type of laser cutter to etch glass.

  • you're not worried about reflection off the filter damaging the laser?

  • @rektide No - The IR going back up will hit the lens and diverge outward in a wide cone.

  • @fronkenpoop Sadly 60watts is not enough to directly cut metal.

  • THat is aweeeeeeessssssoooommmeeee!!!!!!!!

  • These fumes, aint they bad for the enviroment and rare...

  • Why you used scissors instead of laser cutter? ;-)

  • @BarsMOnster it doesn't cut metal

  • Why didn't you use the laser cutter to cut the Tin Box?

  • @MrTechGuy1995 it doesn't cut metal

  • I could really use more about yappy dog control.

  • Looks like there's already fingerprints on the silicon at the very end...would those need to be cleaned off so as not to muddy up the optical path?

  • @FlyingScientist Thats a good point. I'm not sure.

  • @FlyingScientist I immediately flashed back to that part of "Real Genius" where dirty optics caught the machine on fire :-)

  • @FlyingScientist Sounds like you watched Real Genius ;)

  • i never knew that silicone was IR transparent.

do you know if silicone tubes are cheaper than quarz tubes?

i need tubes for covering the heating elements in my kiln

(to protect me from electrical shock when using metal tonds etc.)

  • @catman72 "Silicon" is IR transparent not "Silicone"

  • @jeriellsworth

of course. sorry, hard to get used to the two ways of spelling it,

do you know if they make tubes out of it? how hot can it get?

  • @catman72 Silicon is essentially a crystallized form of glass. Usually an MSDS sheet would tell you the max temperature of the material you wish to use.

You are looking to cover the element's in a kiln, but honestly anything you use to cover then in the way you are asking about would reduced the ability of the element's to heat the Kiln. Honestly, if I were you, I would find some alloy steel to use as a shroud. That or be careful when using that Kiln.

  • @Joe11Blue

thanks:-) most glassblowers use quartz tubes, those who don't add a kill switch to the door.

i will probably use ceramic net i already have.

unless i find some silicon net?...

  • @catman72 It's not 2 ways of spelling, its 2 entirely different things. Silicone makes window seals and boobs. Silicon makes computer chips and glass.

  • @catman72 High temperature silicone only goes up to around 300 degrees C. Don't go into your kiln without switching it off first. Jeri may be somewhat unsafe in... well... everything, but I certainly wouldn't want to be handling madly hot stuff and worrying about electrocuting myself at the same time.

  • What pinball are you using as a work surface?

  • @seymourshabow That is Roy Clark The Entertainer It's only good for a table. Not playing.

  • @jeriellsworth I also have a cocktail pinball myself. is yours completely non working?

  • @jeriellsworth Is Roy Clark out on the streets earning some quarters yet?

  • @tanioklyce Roy Clark needs a brain board transplant. It doesn't boot up.

  • Did you ever get a filter built for the laser cutter, or are you still gassing out your neighbors? :)

  • @Dibblah1900 I need to run the hose directly into that yappy dogs house.

  • witchcraft!
