The ban on scarves is directly contradicts 2 primary tenets of liberalism and those are freedom of expression and religion. I cannot see how any true advocate of secularism/liberalism can be in support of this. You sir, are a hypocrite.
When pious muslims prove capable (again) to value human reason things will definitely change. But till then a benign form of authoritarianism (keeping as much as possible from liberal democracies) is definitely the best solution for the muslim world. It seems to me that the army in Turkey is such a benign factor; the recent changes are by no means reassuring, it may seem paradoxically but reducing the powers of the army may lead to a return to the (re)islamization of the country.
Without (full) secularism there is no real Modernity. The scarf itself should not be banned in public institutions (but I do not mean burka or niqab) in a liberal society indeed but given the peculiar nature of islam (the only religion having an intrinsic, totalitarian, political program) I fully understand this ban. The reality is (and history shows this plenty) that islam can be kept in check only by some relatively authoritarian (when compared with western democracies) regimes.
The hijab should not be banned from the universities, but at the same time alchohol should not be banned either, u can't say ban alchohol, but u can't ban the hijab.
