As far as i can make it , its a gordon lightfoot original, read somewhere when elvis covered it, elvis changed a word, and in tribute lightfoot started singing it in his live shows.
Yeh man... just had a look at the elvis version, the guy can fuckin sing eh? I reckon i need to start listenin to more elvis, he's not to be sniffed at know what i mean? ... Lightfoot's "If you could read my mind" is in one of my dads guitar books... might give it a bash an post it on here. Anyway, keep the good work right the fuck up, look forward to hearin more of your covers and original stuff. Take care old chap
Elvis is top dog! Loved him from an early age, was elvis that i first heard sing this, then weller, wasnt too fussed about the original or the peter paul and mary one to be honest.
If you could read my mind is a top top tune, used to be on trigger happy tv, think you could nail it no problam mate.
Gordon Lightfoot wrote the song, so he probably sang it first. But Ian & Sylvia discovered Lightfoot, and their recordings of his two songs (this one and "That's What You Get for Loving Me") were the first ones, on their 4th album, titled after this song. Ian supposedly was hoping it might be a hit, and many people think they did the best job on it, but they shared a manager with Peter, Paul & Mary, who released singles of both songs and had a minor hit with this. Many others covered it.
I believe that Ian & Sylvia's cover was in '65, with Lightfoot's own recording following the next year on his album, LIGHTFOOT! Peter, Paul & Mary's covers were on their albums also released in '65 (all sources seem to agree that Ian & Sylvia were first, and PP&M covered their covers, but I'm not sure that one of their covers didn't actually get released first).
Who else it's a Gordon Lightfoot song and I'll be seeing him perform this Nov.
