This was taped just a few weeks AFTER 9/11. Not deliberately; it had been scheduled months in advance, as it was to be an A&E special to be shown in October of that year.
3:24-3:42. 2001!? within 9 months of 9/11, and he's talking about the skyline in New York falling. Wow, that is creepy. Maybe the whole skyline didn't fall, but the top of it did. RIP
@Runaable I believe this concert happened a little bit after 9/11, because one of the audience members asks him about it, and he was still trying to get his own head around what had happened.
old man vibrato! loving it! he is so amazing!!!! I love him and am in total awe when I hear him! honestly he is totally amazing and supreme in the music world
He actually did take lessons just before "Cold Spring Harbour" (because his first album failed badly in his local area....he thought his voice was too nasal so he had a few lesssons to help with that.
cold spring harbor was his first album, so i don't know what you're saying by "his first album failed badly"... and the speed of Cold Spring Harbor was sped up 1/8 time, so it wasn't the nasalness of his voice. He NEVER took vocal lessons!
@ruskybalboa no, he did a local album that he tried to sell in local places, but the recording was bad and his voice was nasal. he felt so bad about the failure that he went into depression. The song "Tomorrow is Today" is about his feeling while depressed. But Cold Spring Harbour was his first produced album, so you are right.
It's amazing how he can remember chords and random songs right off the top of his head!!! He's the true piano genius! Dylan might have been the lyric writing genius, but Joel was the melody writing genius.
@ruskybalboa well it helps that he has all of the sheet music in front of his face. But with songs like "A Day In The Life" chances are he learned though songs and played them when he was younger. Thats just a guess. Songs like be my baby are pretty simple songs to begin with.
@ruskybalboa not really, when pro musicians practice like we do, especially if you write the pieces, it lodges deep in long term memory. yes ok sometimes it might be a little rusty, but most pieces I played when i was 6-10 despite never playing them now, can still play em off by heart at the drop of a hat. when you play concert after concert and do it for years on end, its deep in ur system forever!
How he goes from song to song to tell the story shows how his mind works... A true musical genius..

Later in the broadcast, he does mention 9/11, so it would be after.
markhatting 11 months ago
Clearly, before 9/11. He wouldn't be so glib about if it was after.

@Runaable As a pianist, it's not hard to memorize songs. Like, even at all. also, Miami 2017 was way way earlier.

@amauritzen89 true for most of them, but "be my baby" has some REALLY intricate chords, but i think he definitely has some ear training haha.

@ruskybalboa
He wrote the songs himself. It won't be so hard for him to remember to chords. Not if you always play without a music sheet in front of you.

@ctenbrinke i'm talking about the songs by other artists, like start me up and be my baby.
