For all those wondering, algebra is extremely important because you can not get into college without knowing it. I don't make the SATs, but it is a simple fact. You can't even get into graduate school without knowing it, once again it's on the test. I had the joy of studying it all over again because the last time I encountered it was high school. Let's just say they are certain academic skills that separate the wheat from the chaff.
@mjn76: Yep. Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell are both very great men in the field of economics. There are plenty of videos on Youtube that feature them. Everyone should check them out and learn something.
public education is a joke. We are more worried about teaching kids how to speak Spanish than learning mathematics/science. I hardly even took any computer programming classes, but I remember how to say like 5 words in Spanish. Hours and hours of learning a foreign language that was worthless. If your going to college for anything other than science, medicine or law, then don't go because you're just wasting your time and most likely will have massive debt with a worthless degree to show for it
It's simple. Our education system is meant to turn us into worker bees, and educating people on taxes, finance and money would severely limit the elite's grasp on us economically. Thus, we need to educate ourselves.
Seriously, how does learning calculus or literature actually help you in your life?
ROFL, this is an idiotic discussion. Every topic they brought up are things that should be taught by FUCKING PARENTS! Jesus fucking christ, you fucking parents expect the school to teach your children fucking everything? Where is the parental responsibility you fucking lazy bastards, expecting the government to take care of you. I guess that's what we get when live in a welfare state. Nobody can do anything anymore without the government. Fuck sake. Health? Diet? Relationship? Tax form?
that's a good thing to put on your resume. 18 year old "im proficient in geometry". Mcdonald's Boss "thats great now go clean the crap off the bathroom walls".
Omg I had to stop listening after one minute, that Bitch is so annoying!!!! Why does she keep cutting off adam and repeating everything he says??? SHUT UP
I completely agree with him. He is so right. I was NEVER taught this shit in school, and we totally should have been. So many of my friends got completely shit credit scores after they turned 19 because at 18 they were send credit cards that they used like crazy because without SCHOOL or PARENTS teaching you that it's incredibly dangerous.
People should visit w w w (.) schoolsucksproject (.) com and listen to the podcasts if they would like to hear some very good and concise lectures on how the public school system is flawed. I especially recommend it if u have kids and want insight into their education.
Part 2: Also, part of the problem with public education is that its mandatory and kids do not get to choose what THEY want to learn. Kids are naturally curious and WANT to learn. The flaw of public schools however is that, for the most part, it sucks the intrinsic motivation to learn out of kids. The more compulsory the education is, the less kids learn. However, the less compulsion there is, the MORE kids want to learn.
I think that parents are in fact part of the reason why some kids do not excell in school. But I also think it would be a mistake to take the blame away from schools themselves. As Adam has said in previous shows, the government virtually has no competition and therefore has no incentive to increase the quality of its public schools. Also, school is mandatory and kids dont have the choice of learning what THEY want to learn. Kids are naturally curious and WANT to learn but... (continue to Part2)
the thing is the government has made the hilarious decision that you are not required to pay the IRS, but they allow them to Ass rape you if you do not... so in short to teach about it the government would have to admit you have to which they cannot unless the supreme court rules again.
I guess I got really lucky when they put me in my school because I am in a class that teaches nothing but money, and I was taught taxes last year in marketing class.
Though truth be told they tell you in such detailed instructions on that tax forum, its pretty hard not to be able to figure it out.
@yak6ex but theres a lot more to knowing math than just numbers. you learn to solve problems and look at different solutions and put things together. and that goes a far way
ROFL, this is an idiotic discussion. Every topic they brought up are things that should be taught by FUCKING PARENTS! Nobody can do anything anymore without the government. Fuck sake. Health? Diet? Relationship? Tax form?
@Hapafull That's what I was thinking. I can kind of understand teaching kids how to fill out income tax forms because if you're in a government school, they should be teaching you how to fill out the government forms that the government makes you fill out every year until you're dead.
But shit, relationships and talking to your boss or a cop is stuff that you should be able to figure out on your own. Ok, I'm terrible at relationships, but I don't want the government telling me how to have one.
@redoubt9000 Apart from the problem lying with the family, which I do agree with. And yes, the education being conducted are simply useless or otherwise taught in the most ignorant fashion possible.
Now maybe the solution is to bring back the idea of apprenticeships where at a certain age you go to work under someone that has already mastered the trade. They teach you the ropes and you get a more specialized education specifically in the thing you want to do.
Most of his rant I agreed with. But the idea that you should write a kid off just didn't sit well with me.There's no telling what opportunities or hurdles one will come to in life.Classes that many think are nonessential like Trig and algebra are parts of engineering and architecture. And because we don't know what a child will choose to be we include it.
If you're a licensed electrician, you're not a manuel laborer. There's a difference between knowing a trade and doing manuel labor. Sorry. That lack of distinction annoyed me.
I agree w/adam on the part where aprents don't care and their kids are the ones who are messed up and how parents expect education to be taught in schools, but on the other side, Math and Language are very important tools; he probably doesn't know how those work but they help your brain acquire spatial and visual skills;
adam carolla - you are a product of your family's incestous relationship between your father to his sister, and you were brought to this world, a retard, lunatic, delusional, drug addict, ignorant, illiterate, uneducated, mongoloid inbred freak!!! You can use all the power of your father being a Mafia godfather, the boss, an expert on extortion, murder, kidnapping, and worst a sex maniac, to kill me! because if you don't I will write you a love letter for the rest of your God forsaken life!!!

Adam is right when it comes to religion but he doesn't know much about education because he didn't do shit when he was in school. He's a drop out who didn't amount to much which is why he was working construction and other jobs before he got on Loveline and The Man Show. He does make a good point about life skills for idiots like him and his friends.
School choice. Private schools and vouchers are the answer. ANYTHING the government controls sucks. Mandatory schooling is a givin. But let different schools compete. They would get favor based upon performance. Where is the accountability for schools and teachers now? A school sucks with bad teachers and we throw MORE money at them?
I just hate the whole fair share mantra that so many people repeat like some kind of freaking chant. I pay 40% of my income to the government and I use literally nothing - private healthcare, private schools etc. Fair god damn share, my ass.
I agree with what Adam says about the culture however the fact is that public schools have been going dowhill ever since public employees were allowed to unionize. Its the the teacher unions. The have turned teaching into a completely producer driven industry. Forget about the parents and the kids. Its all about the administrators, the union representatives and the teachers (regardless of whether or not they are any good).
@jjm31usa Obama is an incompetant piece of trash and if you cant see that you are not paying attention. Ignorance will get you nowhere in this world scrub... go read a non-fiction book about current economic policies and save yourself the shame of being a fucking tool.
Adam is right. It is all about culture and parents who value education. I am white and I attended a predominately black high school. Yet all of the AP classes were predominately white and Asian. We were all from the same income group, attended the same schools and had the exact same opportunities. The majority of the black students just didn't seem to care because their parents didn't care. You can invest billions in these schools and it won't make a difference unless the parents get involved.
@QueenMajora Typical racist. Blacks and hispanics have been discriminated against for years ranging from segregated schools to integrated schools. Blacks students are often tracked away from Honors and AP classes and into simpler, vocational and non-academic courses. The AP classes are White and Asian because schools want it that way. It is nothing new and not due to parents and cultures.
@MultiSmartass1 I suppose you have peer reviewed proof that there is some conspiracy to keep Blacks and Hispanics out of AP classes and honors? Maybe a study that was done by Stanford? An undercover CNN report where they got on the inside and discovered the teachers behind the scenes putting on their pointy white hoods? Surely you aren't just pulling things out of your ass to support your world view of racial conspiracy? Not a smart guy like you, I am sure.
@Cajaquarius Youre right-Iam a smart guy. After all, I was in at least 2 AP classes when I was in high school and I possess a BA degree. I wouldn't call this a racial conspiracy-just racism. Blacks and Hispanics have generally been shut out and tracked to lower classes despite ability and aptitude. Though I support scientific enquiry, I don't think peer-reviewed experiments would be applicable here. This would social science not hard or applied science.
I had a very similar situation- and you are exactly right. Everyone of the AP kids I was in school with, both white and black, just assumed that they were going to college (or university) to get a specialized degree, and would go on to get a job from there. And most of us were going to college entirely through scholarships. All the non-AP kids (especially black unfortunately) would make fun of each other when one of them mentioned going to college to get a degree, calling it gay..
.... Now heres the thing, If they were given the proper values on the importance of education, and actually made an effort to do well in high school, they could have gotten twice the scholarships we did and gone to college or university.
The problem is that every single one of them seemed to think that obtaining a degree of some sort and going into a specialized field would be "gay". Instead all of them wanted to rise to the top through sports, selling drugs, or being a thug
@QueenMajora And people will jump on you and say 'That's Racist.' But it's a fucking fact. There are so many poor people in India and yet half the people in the nation are doctors or engineers. It all comes down to culture, not race. Race is just what makes you genetically look different but you are still of the same species, it's not going to make a fucking difference. You minus well say brunettes are smarter than red heads. It's just stupid and illogical, it's all cultural-based.
I took a class called Career and Life Management here in Alberta, Canada which I guess Carolla would be pleased with in theory but if he had to take it, he'd probably be ranting against it twice monthly. A lot of BS about meditation and guys who de-ice planes at the air port comming in to talk to you...
When you're a kid it's all on paper until you get out in the big bad world and have to walk the pavement like everyone else. Doesn't matter what you were told in some class.
All the stuff he is talking about is mandatory education here in Canada. The courses are called planning (for grade 10) and transition (for grade 12) which must be completed to graduate, These cover EVERYTHING he talked about in his rant. I thought they did the same in the U.S but I guess not. Really though why the hell don't they?
It's hard to ask Americans in general to pay for good schools. However, the schools alone are not to blame. We have many parents who are unable or unwilling to make sure their kids are getting the education they need. There is no one reason why our schools are in such shambles and why we don't do enough to get them ready for the real world.
@seattlehawkins Teachers are told what to teach. It doesn't matter how good or bad the teacher is if the curriculum is controlled by a propaganda machine. It's been proven over and over again that government controlled education doesn't work.
@IrkedMonkeyTim America needs all that money too invade foreign countries, give mega-corporations taxcuts, put surveillance on regular citizens and fight marijuana. Everyone knows that's much more important than education and healthcare.
Actually they sorta do. I had to take "decision making" when I was in 10th grade. It covered everything that adam was talking about except filing taxes.
But to tell you the truth I always felt it was seriously lacking in information. They just sort of gave you a lecture on how you're suppose to do things, then told you to fill out 1 or 2 simple sheets of paper in class or you could take the sheet home and do it. If you had any questions or didn't understand something then you were T.O.L.
Why don't they? Because the U.S. government has been dead set on dumbing down everyone to be future generations of mass-consuming sheep. To me it really sounds Republican. Here's hoping that the Obamas can pull some more change...
I don't mean democrats in the congress. I mean the dems have been in the back pockets of the NEA and schools board like how the repubs are backed by oil companies.
That's anecdotal. The religious right has been very successful in taking over school boards (in general), so I doubt Democrats are controlling policy within the school administrations. However, I agree that the NEA is a shit union and the political left is beholden to them.
I'm all for unions as long as they stay within the economic sphere. They need to stay out of politics, just like businesses should. This is how special interests have ended up dominating our government.
Yep,you're right that is 1 thing the repubs did with schools. However as I said dems have been running the NEA for decades. I also don't see how the religious right has taken over so many school boards when prayer is not allowed in any school sponsored function.
.... because school boards can't overrule the supreme court... you can pray all damn day in school, it just cannot be sanctioned by the public school.
@daiitokumyouou899 I actually didn't have the whole "fill out a cheque", or "this is what a tax form looks like" (thank you, e-filing!) but yeah... definitely remember having Careers in grade 10 and a slightly more intensive one in grade 11. And then in college, I couldn't turn around without tripping over another goddamn "learn to create a resume" class.
@seattlehawkins That would be second year economics not high school:P On a serious note, we don't "sit back' as you put it. Canada has a significant role in the world. You really should do more research; if you did then you would know that Canada has 70% of the worlds entire fresh water resources, exports most of the worlds grain, soft lumber, uranium, insulin and we designed the rocket engine used in the space shuttle. Not bad for a country of only 33million.
Also we all know that television manipulates us and makes you narrow minded by keeping us locked into the consumer frenzy. So we ask ourselves why do we still participate in this sick society, where money and status are the only form of wealth. Well i dont have the answers just the questions, hopefully one day we will all know why.......
Also we all know our monetary system is a fractul banking system and that we have more debt than we have money to pay it back. We all know that paying taxes means we are all consenting to illegal wars and to the death of millions of children. We all know that paying taxes also contributes to draconian contols of our own lives and our kids lives will be in crisis. We all know that buying stuff like cars and fashionable clothing doesnt really make us happy and in doing so is distroying our planet.
Must think we are all idiots, we all know taxes are a fraud. Schooling ruins creativity, money is fiat currancy and has no substance to back it up. Our central banks are private profit making corporations and so are schools, police stations, hospitals etc etc. We all know that when we register anything it becomes property of whoever its registered to, yes even our children. We all know the difference between laws and statutes and if you dont consent it cannot be inforced.
Fix the family don't fix the school!!

@QueenMajora
I had a very similar situation- and you are exactly right. Everyone of the AP kids I was in school with, both white and black, just assumed that they were going to college (or university) to get a specialized degree, and would go on to get a job from there. And most of us were going to college entirely through scholarships. All the non-AP kids (especially black unfortunately) would make fun of each other when one of them mentioned going to college to get a degree, calling it gay..
rubrbandball 1 year ago
@QueenMajora
Instead all of them wanted to rise to the top through sports, selling drugs, or being a thug
rubrbandball 1 year ago
@QueenMajora And people will jump on you and say 'That's Racist.' But it's a fucking fact. There are so many poor people in India and yet half the people in the nation are doctors or engineers. It all comes down to culture, not race. Race is just what makes you genetically look different but you are still of the same species, it's not going to make a fucking difference. You minus well say brunettes are smarter than red heads. It's just stupid and illogical, it's all cultural-based.
limbdarkening 1 year ago
@limbdarkening That is such an excellent quote - race is what makes you look different.

@QueenMajora A liberal arts education is wasted on most people-America once knew this, but the egalitarian mindset from the 60s has erased all that.

If you think meditation is bs, it's pretty obvious why you're a failure. What a dense, shallow moron you are.

@Alfrunk meditation has some benefits yes. not a miracle cure by a long shot though

IrkedMonkeyTim 2 years ago 14
@IrkedMonkeyTim "It's hard to ask Americans in general to pay for good schools."
Spending per pupil, adjusted for inflation, has more than doubled since 1970. Test scores are flat.
Money is not the problem.

@IrkedMonkeyTim
considered that the parents might have been screwed by your 3rd world schools too, and they should educated their children? makes sense doesnt it?

@IrkedMonkeyTim Shambles? Where? In niggersville yes! But in general NO. Thats an insult to teachers!
seattlehawkins 1 year ago
@seattlehawkins Teachers are told what to teach. It doesn't matter how good or bad the teacher is if the curriculum is controlled by a propaganda machine. It's been proven over and over again that government controlled education doesn't work.

@IrkedMonkeyTim America needs all that money too invade foreign countries, give mega-corporations taxcuts, put surveillance on regular citizens and fight marijuana. Everyone knows that's much more important than education and healthcare.
Sachaztan 11 months ago
Actually they sorta do. I had to take "decision making" when I was in 10th grade. It covered everything that adam was talking about except filing taxes.
But to tell you the truth I always felt it was seriously lacking in information. They just sort of gave you a lecture on how you're suppose to do things, then told you to fill out 1 or 2 simple sheets of paper in class or you could take the sheet home and do it. If you had any questions or didn't understand something then you were T.O.L.
ariklynn 2 years ago
Why don't they? Because the U.S. government has been dead set on dumbing down everyone to be future generations of mass-consuming sheep. To me it really sounds Republican. Here's hoping that the Obamas can pull some more change...

BS the Dems are the ones that have been in control of the school's for decades.
1KCjoker 2 years ago 5
What? That doesn't make any sense. State Congresses set education policy, not The Democrats, like they're a national shadow organization.
People don't want to pay taxes; that's the bottom line. Without taxes, there's no public schools.
WinchesterQDouche 2 years ago
I don't mean democrats in the congress. I mean the dems have been in the back pockets of the NEA and schools board like how the repubs are backed by oil companies.
1KCjoker 2 years ago
That's anecdotal. The religious right has been very successful in taking over school boards (in general), so I doubt Democrats are controlling policy within the school administrations. However, I agree that the NEA is a shit union and the political left is beholden to them.
I'm all for unions as long as they stay within the economic sphere. They need to stay out of politics, just like businesses should. This is how special interests have ended up dominating our government.
WinchesterQDouche 2 years ago
No. Child. Left. Behind.
Look it up. See what it did.
blackpyr 2 years ago 2
Yep,you're right that is 1 thing the repubs did with schools. However as I said dems have been running the NEA for decades. I also don't see how the religious right has taken over so many school boards when prayer is not allowed in any school sponsored function.
1KCjoker 2 years ago
.... because school boards can't overrule the supreme court... you can pray all damn day in school, it just cannot be sanctioned by the public school.
blackpyr 2 years ago
just cause prayer is out doesnt mean all the other bullshit didnt leave either

@daiitokumyouou899 I actually didn't have the whole "fill out a cheque", or "this is what a tax form looks like" (thank you, e-filing!) but yeah... definitely remember having Careers in grade 10 and a slightly more intensive one in grade 11. And then in college, I couldn't turn around without tripping over another goddamn "learn to create a resume" class.
thepunkfish109 1 year ago
@daiitokumyouou899 What grade do you guys teach "Sit back and let America do everything, Then Mother-fuck them after the fact?" Mahalo!
seattlehawkins 1 year ago

We all know that buying stuff like cars and fashionable clothing doesnt really make us happy and in doing so is distroying our planet.
kevbrav 3 years ago
Must think we are all idiots, we all know taxes are a fraud. Schooling ruins creativity, money is fiat currancy and has no substance to back it up. Our central banks are private profit making corporations and so are schools, police stations, hospitals etc etc. We all know that when we register anything it becomes property of whoever its registered to, yes even our children. We all know the difference between laws and statutes and if you dont consent it cannot be inforced.
