i'm a white belt and i just joined the U.F.A.A 3 weeks ago and today sempi made us do the horse stance for 10 mins and it hurt my legs SOOOOO bad they were shaking well at least it felt like it was shaking but it reality i looked at my legs and they weren't moving at all
why the hell tkd imitates everything karate does? its because the creator of tkd general choi learned shotokan karate and created tkd based on shotokan techniques.
@neutrino78x the horse stance variates in different martial arts, most of the time your hands however should be in ur designated training positioning. Im in kung fu so mines would be at my pelvis. In the horse stance you condition your legs, back , and it helps you get more grounded which is the original philosophy to it. But you can practice your punches, blocks while in that position and just extend your arms to condition them as well. hope that helps
hey guys, how come none of these videos address the position of your arms? In my studio they always wanted the arms in a boxer position. I have seen other videos showing tournaments with traditional TKD, and the guys have their arms at their sides all the time...is that traditional TKD?? To leave your arms at your sides? news to me?? Although the guy who ran the studio I went to also trained people in full contact/octagon/cage TKD. maybe that's the reason...
forget about fancy horse stances, of "moving the horse," fancy forms, pressure, locking, etc. All these will promote your mechanical aspects rather than help you. You will be bound by these unnatural rhythmic messes, and when you are in combat it is broken rhythm and timing you have to adjust to. The opponent is not going to do things rhythmically with you as you would do in practicing karate kata's or kung fu forms alone or with a partner.
There is a critical omission here. In your riding stance (Jumchum Sogi) you MUST have your feet pointing straight ahead; they should not be at an angle.
The instructor does not mention this, but should.
yes my husband is fanatical with our son about toes forward and even our TKD master book he gives at start of his school tells the stance positions and says toes straight.ironically the japnese art my son is now in tells them toes pointed out is ok and easier. We call it lazy!
Man this guy is a real master!

To be honest the korean name sounds better and taekwondo is a korean sport, so you should use the korean names :)

Actually he does say feet pointed forward which would be the same thing as feet pointed to the front.

My mistake, you are correct.
