Sergei is a legend :) I have watched Sayat Nova, Surami Fortress last weak and became an admirer of his movies. I have been looking for this movie and Ashik Kerib but I cannot understand it without subtitle :( I guess I have to wait little longer and find one with subtitle :( or learn Ukrainian.

I´m descendant of Hutsuls, and they identified themselves as Ukrainians. The language they speak is the Hutsul variant of Ukrainian language. Before to say some things that "Hutsuls are not Ukrainians" or "Hutsuls speak a language different of Ukrainian" it is better to ask them who they identify as. The fact is that a lot of them (almost all) identify as Ukrainians, and that nobody can change.

Actually, the film is centered on a Hutsul community in the Carpathian Mountains. So the characters are not Ruthenians; they are Hutsuls. The language is the Hutsul dialect, different from Ukrainian.

Difference in dialects does not imply complete difference of folks or language. Germany for example has three times more dialects than Ukraine, and they differ often much more - this does not mean yet that Bavarians are not Germans.
